Ange, for the love of everything green and white, defend

186

In the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Celtic will pair Stephen Welsh and Moritz Jenz in central defence in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid tonight. These two have only played together once before, at St Mirren Park, which saw our only domestic defeat of the season. The omens are not good.

If you are in the business of looking for more generous portents, there’s always that game in Barcelona 18 years ago, when a teenage David Marshall and 20-year-old John Kennedy were drafted into the Celtic side that denied Ronaldinho et al. Results like this do happen, as most of the CQN demographic are old enough to testify.

What does not happen, ever, is the likes of Celtic pitching up at the home of the European champions, playing open, expansive football, with an inexperienced and young central defence, and leaving with anything other than an absolute drubbing.

Ange, for the love of everything green and white, defend tonight. Regard forward runs with anything more than three players a ridiculous extravagance. Deny Real openings, like a two-on-one overload at the back post. Ask John Kennedy how exhilarating it was to be the extra man necessary to scoop the ball away from an opponent just before he shot.

We are five lessons into the Champions League this season in a group that held such promise when the draw was made. Nothing will be learned from discovering what will happen if both full backs simultaneously bomb forward to give Stephen and Moritz forward passing options. Even a win, unlikely as it is, will not affect our bottom of the group status.

Tonight is hopefully a dry run for what we will do away to tier one teams in next season’s Champions League. Let’s use it effectively.

Re the tony Watt red card .

There was a segment on it on sportscene and IMO it wasnt a red card .

The trouble was that the VAR only seemed to show Beaton a part of the incident and did not show it through to the finish .

It seemed to pause it at the point and angle of Watt making contact with the players shin . If that is all Beaton was shown I can understand why he thought it could be a red .

If however the VAR had let the incident play through to it’s conclusion ,he would have saw Watt pulling out of the challenge with no malice intended .

IMO though it just highlights the fact that the person on VAR duty can influence a check to their preference

Feel free to delete my 4.05 post either on the basis of it being pre watershed so inappropriate or purely for being a lame attempt at a joke.

The young guy you encountered was not homeless.

More likely penniless. He told you he had used up his emergency credit on his pay as you go meter that morning. Did you ask him if he had received the £66 voucher from his energy provider, which can be used to top up his meter via card or key? Or had taken it, with meter key, to the Post Office or Pay Point? The reason I ask is that some £30 million in vouchers issued in October have not yet been retrieved by those who rely on pay in advance meters. It is a widespread problem, and most likely affects those whose lives are less well organised. He will due another voucher this month, not a solution but some support at least over the winter.

    I’m also oddly looking, apparently.

Hard to reconcile what ‘acceptable’ looks like. I’ll probably leave that to those supporters who have made the commitment to be there

A claque is a group of people hired to applaud. I think it originates in French theatre but has become used to describe those who sycophantically applaud politicians.

I never knew what it meant until the newsletters supposedly written by an increasingly Gordon Brown in Private Eye in which he would routinely describe his critics as belonging to a Blairite Claque

aye, as you descirbed it, poor guy is potless, might have other issues, but the complexity of applying for the vouchers, and keeping the heat on is beyond his ken,

there had to be a better way to do this, like making direct payments to the energy company on the people behalf.

those pre pay meters at higher charge rates are a disgusting profiteering on the peolle who cannot afford it the most,

if a party actually propsed in a manifesto their commitment to do away with them i would vote them in.
