Axing the Act one vote at a time

849

I was at primary school during the 1979 devolution referendum.  It’s fair to say many in the Celtic community were suspicious of the SNP due to the hostile attitudes some of the party leadership had to the Irish diaspora in their midst.

Fresh blood brought change to the SNP in the 1980s, there were even overtures to Irish nationalism.  Alex Salmond cemented these changes, broadened the appeal of the party towards new and multi-generation immigrants, and asserted the SNP’s multi-faith credentials.  He also became close friends with disgraced Cardinal O’Brien (which is no reflection on Mr Salmond).

At the height of his political powers Salmond appears to have overreached.  Something would be done about men shouting at football games.  From now on only certain flavours of nationalism would be favoured, acceptable, perhaps even legal.  MSP Christine Graham let the Scottish Parliament know, the problem was that Celtic fans were not acting illegally, so the law had to change.

The Axe the Act candidate in today’s Glasgow City Council, Govan, by-election, Thomas Rannachan has brought the consequences of Salmond’s largess to his door.  The SNP are defending the seat but one year out from the battle Salmond really needs to win, his shoddy attack on football fans is set to undermine him.  As an independent Rannachan may not win, but he has put the First Minister on the back foot.

George Ryan’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, at 10:00 on Monday. All are welcome.

Good Morning ( as it is now ).

Can I just point out that the Scottish Legislature only has jurisdiction over events that occur in Scotland and so conducting yourself in any which way you want in England, France, Spain or Mongolia could not be, and is not, governed by the law of Scotland.

Accordingly, singing or chanting or doing something which may be deemed to be unlawful in Scotland may well not be unlawful at all anywhere else.

    ==================================================================

BRTH, while I accept unreservedly your knowledge on legal matter over my own, I have to state that you are wrong on this issue. I noticed your post just as I was leaving for Govan this morning and had no time to reply. Indeed after reading your post a seed of doubt entered my head re this issue so I took it upon myself to clarify this point with FAC candidate and his agent in the Govan bye election.

I have to report that I used the 2 same examples as I did last night and they both confirmed that under those circumstances under the Offensive Behaviour Act you would be liable to be charged with an offence under the terms of the act. similarly if you were at a game abroad involving a Scottish team this act gives the Police in this country the right to charge an individual with an offence when they come back into this country.

For these and other reasons are why I oppose this piece of legislation.

Nights like this you can see why the ole pentagon loves the internet.

What an eclectic series of posts there is on here tonight. Where to start? Cannae so won’t!

    And here was me thinking that it was Yes Scotland, whose Chair is Dennis Canavan, that is at the forefront of the campaign for Independence. Of which the SNP are part. The by-election in Govan today will tell us about something about the SNP’s standing, against Labour, but what it will not tell us is the number of voters in Scotland likely to vote Yes next September. Speaking of desperation while we are at it, the No campaign, in the form of Calum Campbell (Con) and Danny Gibson (Lab) earlier proposed a motion as part of the Con-Lab Coalition which runs Stirling Council, which would have replaced the Saltire with the Union flag at the Stirling HQ;

“…stand up for the symbols of our country….the symbols of men and women of Stirling who have fought and died for 300 years….”

Notwithstanding the fact that the present day Union flag dates only from the Act of Union 1801, of Great Britain and Ireland. Again, facts, what are we to do with them?

Postscript; Campbell and Gibson have withdrawn their motion, not so much in knots, more not even being able to untie one.

  13. Green man: I don’t agree but understand your scepticism on politicians

ernie lynch: I would think it highly unlikely that there any major political

party worldwide that doesn’t have dirty laundry in its history. The SNP

that you talk of is long dead and gone. The title they had of ‘Tartan Tories, was well earned. This new modern party has been evolving now for the past 20 odd years, and maybe it is not quite there but we are getting

there, unlike the Tories, who have stepped back in time with their Thatcher type policies of a blatant attack on the weakest members of society. Labour had 13 years of blatant misrule with their Tory policies and illegal wars. That is the choice we have. Independence or Status Quo.

Nearly 50 countries have gained independence from London rule and not one would go back.

Anti independants would have you believe we are too stupid, too feart to run our own nation state. This isn’t true: we will thrive.

  14. Ghuys I need to go out but I will leave you with the message I got from Linda this morning:

“Hi Lennybhoy, thanks for all of your kindness. George would really have appreciated your help. We had planned to launch a charity in memory of our wee boy Sean who was still born in 2000. We had intended to launch the charity at the re -Gen wards ceremony on 24 October in the Crown Plaza hotel in Glasgow.

The Children and I will still be attending the event and still intend to form the charity in the name of Sean’s Trust. George has wanted to buy a couple of Log Cabins at Loch Lomand for families who had lost a child to still birth to spend some respite quiet time. We would prefer no flowers other than close friends and family.

In place of flowers we are asking for donations to the charity fund. The funeral arrangements are Sunday evening 6.30 pm at St Andrews Cathedral monday 10 am Mass at St Andrews followed by Daldowie at 11.45 for cremation and back to City Chambers for 1 pm. for a wee chat coffee etc..

Thanks again Lennybhoy we would like to accept the 4 tickets for Celtic Park for Ajax all seated together. Would it be ok if we kept the other 2 tickets we already have because they are George and Christopher’s own seats and his brother and nephew would like them. Best Wishes Lennybhoy and thank you all for your amazing help and love YWNWA Hail Hail keep the faith

Ghuys on the back of the above I now propose not to set up a Mydonate account, whilst well worthy, I think we should donate our funds to Sean;s charity and propose we do this. However, it is your money, your decision. Please let me know what you think.

I covered Linda’s response in an earlier post but the wreath will be with George in his fron room on Saturday.

I will read back but probably not tonight, you can contact me at lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

If you are agreeable please keep sending donations to me.

God Bless George Ryan, God Bless CQN, God Bless Celtic.

I will not sign off with my usual, until we meet again…

The last word goes to Linda:

“…Best Wishes Lennybhoy and thank you all for your amazing help and love YWNWA Hail Hail keep the faith…”

    British rule, not London rule.

On a per capita basis, the Scots played a far greater role in building and maintaining the British Empire than the English ever did.

Another aspect of history the SNP would prefer to ignore.

  17. I have not posted much, but have grave concerns over SNP and the referendum. I will never vote yes no matter how that wee man offers. Can’t wait until Scotland votes NO , and sure as hell he will disappear under a stone and leave Nicola to it. One man band and a horrible one at that.

A gentleman called in to ask why they continually state

that D.King lost £20million investing in “Rangers”.

The guy stated he supported only his family and were

the panel not aware of the £18million D.King received in

    EBT,s ?

Do you have proof he was asked.

Yes, a South African court statement.

Not cutting you off sir but the show is about to end !
