I was at primary school during the 1979 devolution referendum. It’s fair to say many in the Celtic community were suspicious of the SNP due to the hostile attitudes some of the party leadership had to the Irish diaspora in their midst.
Fresh blood brought change to the SNP in the 1980s, there were even overtures to Irish nationalism. Alex Salmond cemented these changes, broadened the appeal of the party towards new and multi-generation immigrants, and asserted the SNP’s multi-faith credentials. He also became close friends with disgraced Cardinal O’Brien (which is no reflection on Mr Salmond).
At the height of his political powers Salmond appears to have overreached. Something would be done about men shouting at football games. From now on only certain flavours of nationalism would be favoured, acceptable, perhaps even legal. MSP Christine Graham let the Scottish Parliament know, the problem was that Celtic fans were not acting illegally, so the law had to change.
The Axe the Act candidate in today’s Glasgow City Council, Govan, by-election, Thomas Rannachan has brought the consequences of Salmond’s largess to his door. The SNP are defending the seat but one year out from the battle Salmond really needs to win, his shoddy attack on football fans is set to undermine him. As an independent Rannachan may not win, but he has put the First Minister on the back foot.
George Ryan’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, at 10:00 on Monday. All are welcome.

I’ve not said the act covers foreign nationals watching games involving their team in their own country. The act appears to cover games involving Scottish teams and those attending or watching those games, whether it could be used against a French person attending a game in our country, well yes it would cover them. I agree that no way would our Police force use this against a foreign national attending a game in their country then coming to ours for the return game.
Your post highlights the actual absurdity of the legislation. You may think it is not the case that you could be charged under this legislation while attending a European away game, I would ask why do Focus go to these games with their video camera’s and why they are paid out of the Budget set aside by the Scottish government to assist the Police in implementing this act?
I know it’s almost to absurd to believe that the Scottish legal system was party to drawing up this farcical legislation but they were, the overseas part of it has yet to be used but as the Police are now arresting young men for singing ROH then I think some young bhoys and ghirls may be getting an early morning visit from Focus on their return from Holland.
Hope I’m wrong but why have it in the act if they aren’t prepared to use it, interesting times ahead I think.

Why was 1 of those detained yesterday held in a cell for nearly 6 hrs before being charged? Because that is the maximum length someone can be held without charge. He could have been charged within 5 mins of being arrested and then released to go to his work but no he was held for the maximum time possible then charged then released.

I sat in parliament on Wednesday afternoon when nichola sturgeon made her announcement about Prestwick airport. I thought this announcement was about putting off the bad news (close the airport) until after the referendum. They didn’t seemed feart. I was amazed about the lack of
opposition. I think the decision was about doing anything to get Independence.
The openness (freedom) of movement of the parliament building made me proud to be Scottish. I’m not a moslem nor do I look like an Asian. That might have made a difference.

Agree, I have a friend who is a MSP and could not fully understand the adverse reaction to the Act. Well I did offer a football perspective to the ramifications of it however its too deeply entrenched in the top of the Gov in Scotland to change imo.
