Axing the Act one vote at a time

849

I was at primary school during the 1979 devolution referendum.  It’s fair to say many in the Celtic community were suspicious of the SNP due to the hostile attitudes some of the party leadership had to the Irish diaspora in their midst.

Fresh blood brought change to the SNP in the 1980s, there were even overtures to Irish nationalism.  Alex Salmond cemented these changes, broadened the appeal of the party towards new and multi-generation immigrants, and asserted the SNP’s multi-faith credentials.  He also became close friends with disgraced Cardinal O’Brien (which is no reflection on Mr Salmond).

At the height of his political powers Salmond appears to have overreached.  Something would be done about men shouting at football games.  From now on only certain flavours of nationalism would be favoured, acceptable, perhaps even legal.  MSP Christine Graham let the Scottish Parliament know, the problem was that Celtic fans were not acting illegally, so the law had to change.

The Axe the Act candidate in today’s Glasgow City Council, Govan, by-election, Thomas Rannachan has brought the consequences of Salmond’s largess to his door.  The SNP are defending the seat but one year out from the battle Salmond really needs to win, his shoddy attack on football fans is set to undermine him.  As an independent Rannachan may not win, but he has put the First Minister on the back foot.

George Ryan’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, at 10:00 on Monday. All are welcome.

By the way, news has come through tonight that after at least a couple of years of legal action, the UCI ( cycling body ) has dropped its legal case against Paul Kimmage the former cyclist and journalist who had repeatedly berated the UCI and its former President Pat McQuaid.

The UCI had taken action against Kimmage as a result of his repeated attacks on the sports body in relation to their stance on doping and their actions concerning Lance Armstrong.

The decision to abandon the action comes shortly after McQuaid was voted out of office in a recent election.

I had a chat with some MSP’s about post ref and the status of SNP should indie be achieved. Now some are surprised that those who supported them pre indie would seek other political affilications after because the target has been achieved i.e. independance.

The SFA cannot allow king into this new club, since he was a Director of a Club / business which went bust in the past 5 years……RULES ARE RULES……oh, no, wait, this is Scotland..

It is indeed, although its not Scotland that could be turning a blind eye to this.It will be the SFA. where we will have a very strong representation in Peter Lawell. If this is OKd,I would expect the resignation of our CEO from this obviously corrupt body.Wont you?.

She did challenge, she got the ban lifted eventually. However, Focus (of which Mr Lawwell is a committee member) provided the evidence to Celtic who acted on it by banning her. I remember at the time, the talk being that supporters would be charged on return from foreign parts if they breached the act. I don’t think that has happened so what you say makes sense. However the above example shows 2 things.

Focus are travelling with supporters at taxpayers expense with a very flimsy remit if they can’t charge people who contravene the Act abroad.

They are using the jaunts to target specific people and harassing them without proper/any evidence.

    Why?

    ————

For the same reason that I support the rights of the Irish people to self-determination.

I refuse to believe that there is not the talent in this country, which has given so much to the progress of humanity, to forge a better future on its own.

The clincher for me personally is that it would seem to be the only possible way that we could stop being a nuclear arsenal for our warring neighbours.

    We don’t need these obscenities.

We don’t have one single enemy on the planet which would merit us stockpiling such weapons of mass destruction.

I tend to agree but I do believe a Scottish Labour party would swing more to the left.

To be honest, I was forgetting that you’re one of the more logical thinkers on here, but too many seem to think that a Yes victory is a vote for the SNP in perpetuity, and that’s just nonsense.

I don’t think Yes will win, but the closer it is the more likely we are to get Devo Max (or whatever they’re calling it now), and while I fear that that may lead to SNP forever I want as much power away from Westminster are possible.

I have a great fear that until we’re as far removed as possible we may end up with the private healthcare system England and Wales are getting.

Thanks for that! For obvious reasons I want Thomas to do well, but know that he is up against two major Parties in a City election, lower turnout and all. When I say do well, I mean make some kind of an impact on the election. As stated before if he helps reduce the share of the SNP vote, from 2012, he will have went some way to achieving his objective.

  19. At 58 years of age I am no protest groupie and in fact have only taken part in three demonstrations and marches.

The first was the big one in Glasgow just before the Iraq war (100,000) the second another in Edinburgh when the Iraq war was ongoing and the third was at George Square this year following the “Kettling” of Celtic fans by Glasgow’s finest.

The Bill that became the Act was one of the most Draconian and unnecessary pieces of legislation ever. A law that was demanded by the head of the police in Glasgow, who just happened to be looking for a new and better top job (Met or Police Scotland) and wanted to strike a pose as being the man who smashed the Green Brigade Ultras.

The only thing wrong with this scenario was that there was no problem with violent ultras at Celtic Park and the newly constituted FoCUS police have been left to their own devices in portraying one where none exists. Thus you have dawn raids, not to arrest dangerous terrorists or violent gangsters but to huckle 14-year olds who may have said OOH AHH UP THE RA.

George Orwell on speed couldn’t have dreamed this up!

Then we have a Scottish National Party, Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill saying that he will root out those who sing of Irish Nationalism or, and this takes some believing, saying that “England you’re a monster”.

I have watched the police at Celtic Park and their treatment of all fans, not just the Section 111 boys and girls and it is atrocious. But the bigots in blue (and there are many) have taken their cue from the politicians and from an acquiescent Celtic board.

Time it was challenged and changed and hopefully Govan is just the start.

Traditionally (and I’m talking about since the club was founded, not the last couple of years) the Celtic support have supported Irish Independence and voted Labour.

There is no contradiction in that position.
