Barca will be no better prepared, how the news works

817

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Would rather face them with Messi’ world view.  I’ve seen Lionel Messi a couple of times, it’s a bit like standing atop the Eiffel Tower, a breath-taking experience, but I don’t need to visit Paris every month to reinforce the view.  Tomorrow will be an almighty challenge against one of the sport’s all-time great teams.  Having pushed Barcelona to their absolute limits twice last season, we have no right to expect a second consecutive New Firm victory, but this is a home game at Celtic Park, we hope for a win.

The omission of Joe Ledley is a worry.  Celtic need mobility and positional awareness in all positions tomorrow, Joe brings both elements to the party, how Neil Lennon compensates for his enforced absence in central midfield will be a key decision.

I also don’t subscribe to the view that, unlike a year ago, Barca will know what to expect this time.  Celtic’s 2-1 victory last season came after they took Barca to added time at the Camp Nou before Barca got their winner.  Barcelona knew exactly what to expect, they just didn’t know what to do about it.  I see no reason why they will be any better tutored this time.  Unless they’ve figured out a way of making wee guys jump higher than big guys.

We are fast, we’re tall, we defend when necessary and we run all game.  Unless Barca decide to play for a point and defend deep, which they won’t, they will play exactly as they did last season.

On seeing an X Factor item on the news I complained, “That’s not news”, but I was challenged, “If that’s not news, what makes football news?”  Sporting and entertainment events are news if those who produce the news determine it to be so, which places considerable authority on news editors.

Charlotte Fakes revelations have shown us how news professionals, keen to distract attention from a disaster zone of a club, tried to create negative ‘news’ stories concerning Celtic.

Three years ago the Green Brigade displayed a banner at Celtic Park which went largely uncommented upon for several days.  Four days after the event, the banner became a nationwide news story, TV news reported it and it made a Radio 5 Live morning discussion programme.

The delay in the item becoming ‘news’ was the most important part of the story.  It wasn’t news until the news editors had been convinced otherwise.  The damage to Celtic’s reputation was considerable.

Today news editors who ran that story three years ago have an interesting dilemma.  Do they run a story about an alarming message being displayed at a football ground, or without being lobbied, is that not a story?

Celtic don’t spend money trying to get negative stories about other clubs in the newspapers, but this is surely not exclusively the way the ‘news’ industry works.

We shouldn’t have to wait on a whistle-blower to shine a light on what happened three years ago, journalists know when they have been lobbied, and that’s the real story, which is not dependent on unfathomable leaks.

RANGERS Football Club has today announced a price freeze to reward season ticket holders for their unrivalled and unwavering commitment to the Club.

Last season the Club took the unprecedented decision to slash adult season tickets by one third and juveniles by 50%.

This strategy has been reinforced by the record attendances at Ibrox this season making Rangers the fifth most attended club in the UK. The Board has decided to continue this affordability strategy in recognition of the fans and their unquestionable loyalty and support.

Prices for season tickets, which include all 18 league games, start from £258 for Adults, £65 for Kids and £179 for Concessions.

Rangers Interim Chief Executive Craig Mather commented: “The Board is delighted to confirm season ticket prices for next season will be frozen.

“More than 38,000 fans bought season tickets in 2012/13 and in recognition of their tremendous support and loyalty we have taken the decision to keep prices for the forthcoming campaign as low as possible.

They must have sold a hell of a lot of tickets to kids, like circa 20,000 to get 38,000 sales and equate to 4.5.

  2. Apologies if this has already been noted but…

    http://www.followfollow.com/news/tmnw/discounting_any_spin_on_the_rangers_accounts__167m_will_need_to_be_knocked_off_any_profit_808588/index.shtml

£16.7m will need to be knocked off any ‘profit’

Rangers accounts will require careful reading.

The accounts for 13 months to June 2013 will benefit from the non recurring items already declared in the interim results. It is therefore conceivable that RIFC could report a profit before tax in the accounts about to be published.

However this will be entirely due to the £20.465m ‘profit’ created by revaluing the brand and properties on the balance sheet which was shown in the interim accounts. There were also £3.7m of non recurring expenses recorded in the interim results giving net non-recurring credits of £16.7m

Therefore, whatever the headline profit reported, the underlying result will be £16.7m worse and that does not include costs incurred in relation to fund raising which don’t go through the profit and loss account and were £4.373m in the interim accounts.

There may be other non recurring costs in the period January to June 2013 but we will need to wait and see

  3. What did NFL have to say on his pursuit of Finnbogasson in his TV interview? The kid’s been on fire again for Heerenveen.

His value has gone up from £4m to £6.7m this season (source: Transfermarkt) after scoring 10 goals, and providing 3 assists in 7 games in the Dutch league. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but we missed the boat here – £5-6m would have been money well spent and, more importantly, represented good value for the Club.

  4. Funny how it was around page 11 when it became clear this was the accounts of Rangers International plc- the holding company- and not the club that the previous 10 pages were rattling on about- is this why the cover page is missing?

  5. South Of Tunis on

    Life and death .

On a beach yesterday afternoon . Italian State Police turned up and ordered Mrs S of T and I off the beach . Stated reason was that they believed their were dead people in the sea .

Went home , turned on the radio and learned that a minimum of 11 people had drowned in the sea near Sampieri. [ @ 15km from where we’d been ] Sampieri beach is a regular backdrop on Montalbano

Seems that people smugglers had forced people off a boat and into the sea despite protests that many couldn’t swim ..

Official death figures amongst ” illegal immigrants ” in my wee part of the world for 2013 is currently 216 [ men ,women, teenagers ,children and infants] The relevant authorities believe that many more have died than that..

    What a world !

  6. Folks,

Had a client cancel on me tonight – 2 x tickets for Jock Stein Upper. Face value £49 / each. They were bought through StubHub (booking fee of 14.70 !) but happy for 2 for 100 quid. They cannot be collected until 5 so anyone interested let me know and I can meet in city centre.

  7. The armed forces binge at the weekend is purely a dig at us……by trying to point out to the rest of the hero loving uk that in fact…. they really are the good guys and not the micks on the other side of the city.

It is orchestrated to the max. somebody down ibrox way (luv to no who) has decided this is the best way possible to prove they really are great guys ……and really hard done by!!!……………….I think the huge show is for the whole uk …..it is low brained dumbed down politics……….and hopefully will be shown up for what it really is!

  8. Quick question regarding the Rangers accounts. Where are people coming up with the circa £4M for season tickets sales?

It clearly states approx £8M from 12/13 ST sales, if people are using the reports that figures included two years ST sales and halving it they’re barking up the wrong tree, because it states later in the notes to the accounts that ST sales for 13/14 of circa £8M are deferred income.

So 38k at an average of £210 is about right as far as I can see.

  9. Tried to make sense of their accounts l failed …Jack Irvine and co must have congestion of the lungs and sore backs moving all those mirrors in that thick smoke.

I will have to wait for the definitive answer on them from Derek Johnstone on SSB tonight.

  10. DeniaBhoy in awe of wee Oscar's Courage on

As part of the news coverage of the armed forces day at Ibrox, I keep seeing quotes along the lines of “we’ve always been proud to show our support and have close relations with the armed forces” . . . but is this true? I cannot recall any of this kind of stuff from the 70s to the 90s when I lived in Scotland. All this jingoistic, nationalistic, fascist-flag-waving, damn-buster humming started when? I know they began a love-in with the English national team around the time of Woods, Wilkins, Butcher, Hurlock and co but trying to “own” the British Army is something else all together.

  11. Just in to say….

Jobo Baldie was on the money this morning when he said

it will be the – ‘Efe n Virgil show’ imo.

From a ying – yang point of view, it’ll be….

    Celtic 1-1 Barcelona

    or

    Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

    Only saying.

Take good care Celts and have a good night and

    always remember one thing….

We start the game tonight being ghreat amigos

with Barca – we finish the game as Ghreat amigos

    with Barca. ok

    Hail Hail – Off oot.

  12. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon, supporting WEE OSCAR..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on
