Barca will be no better prepared, how the news works

817

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Would rather face them with Messi’ world view.  I’ve seen Lionel Messi a couple of times, it’s a bit like standing atop the Eiffel Tower, a breath-taking experience, but I don’t need to visit Paris every month to reinforce the view.  Tomorrow will be an almighty challenge against one of the sport’s all-time great teams.  Having pushed Barcelona to their absolute limits twice last season, we have no right to expect a second consecutive New Firm victory, but this is a home game at Celtic Park, we hope for a win.

The omission of Joe Ledley is a worry.  Celtic need mobility and positional awareness in all positions tomorrow, Joe brings both elements to the party, how Neil Lennon compensates for his enforced absence in central midfield will be a key decision.

I also don’t subscribe to the view that, unlike a year ago, Barca will know what to expect this time.  Celtic’s 2-1 victory last season came after they took Barca to added time at the Camp Nou before Barca got their winner.  Barcelona knew exactly what to expect, they just didn’t know what to do about it.  I see no reason why they will be any better tutored this time.  Unless they’ve figured out a way of making wee guys jump higher than big guys.

We are fast, we’re tall, we defend when necessary and we run all game.  Unless Barca decide to play for a point and defend deep, which they won’t, they will play exactly as they did last season.

On seeing an X Factor item on the news I complained, “That’s not news”, but I was challenged, “If that’s not news, what makes football news?”  Sporting and entertainment events are news if those who produce the news determine it to be so, which places considerable authority on news editors.

Charlotte Fakes revelations have shown us how news professionals, keen to distract attention from a disaster zone of a club, tried to create negative ‘news’ stories concerning Celtic.

Three years ago the Green Brigade displayed a banner at Celtic Park which went largely uncommented upon for several days.  Four days after the event, the banner became a nationwide news story, TV news reported it and it made a Radio 5 Live morning discussion programme.

The delay in the item becoming ‘news’ was the most important part of the story.  It wasn’t news until the news editors had been convinced otherwise.  The damage to Celtic’s reputation was considerable.

Today news editors who ran that story three years ago have an interesting dilemma.  Do they run a story about an alarming message being displayed at a football ground, or without being lobbied, is that not a story?

Celtic don’t spend money trying to get negative stories about other clubs in the newspapers, but this is surely not exclusively the way the ‘news’ industry works.

We shouldn’t have to wait on a whistle-blower to shine a light on what happened three years ago, journalists know when they have been lobbied, and that’s the real story, which is not dependent on unfathomable leaks.

  10. Bullshit alert

RANGERS today published its annual accounts for the period ended 30 June.

    Highlights:-

The Club was returned to operational and financial stability.

Rangers won the Scottish League Division 3 title by 24 points.

The Club celebrated its 140th year in existence.

The company was floated successfully on the AIM Market, raising £22 million for the Club.

Craig Mather, the Club’s chief executive, said: “In presenting my first annual report as Chief Executive, I am delighted to state that substantial progress is being made in rebuilding Rangers.

“The Club is in a very different place to where we were in May 2012. Then, the situation was traumatic and the future uncertain. Now, we enjoy financial stability and have a solid platform from where we can focus all our efforts on achieving success as one of football’s great clubs.

“In the last year, key milestones have been passed successfully. The first team squad has strengthened considerably. The Club enjoys a healthy bank balance. The cost base has been reduced significantly. Business performance is improving and, most importantly, the Club continues to benefit enormously from the unwavering commitment of our fans. Without this support, the re-establishment of Rangers could not happen.

“As expected, we are reporting significant operating losses, although a retained profit. This is consistent with the Club’s five-year business plan. At no stage was it anticipated nor forecast that the business of the football club could return an operating profit in the first year since acquisition. The full recovery of Rangers will take time and I am delighted to report that the Club is firmly on track to achieve this objective.

“Revenues totalled £19.1 million and while there was significant progress made in terms of First Team wages/Turnover ratio, now at one of the lowest for leading clubs at 43%. Operating losses totalled £14 million. First Team players wages were reduced to £7.8 million and more than £4.2 million of expenditure is non-recurring. Profit on ordinary activities before taxation totalled £1.3 million leaving a profit for the period of £1.2 million.

“Lower season ticket prices reflecting the league status meant a drop of nearly 33% in season ticket revenues. Media revenues fell and there were financial consequences of the collapse of JJB Sports. There were also substantial payments of £2.4 million made to clear football debts to other Clubs incurred pre-administration which the management of the Club was committed to addressing, although were not strictly liable to do so.

“We have invested £1.8m in stadium wifi and LED/Jumbo screens to improve fan experience. This should also help generate additional revenue streams and it is the intention to make profitable use of Edmiston House, which was brought back into the Club’s ownership along with the Albion Car Park for £2.5 million.

“Following the acquisition of the Club in June last year and the securing of our position within the Scottish league structure, Rangers was floated successfully on the Alternative Investment Market in December of last year, raising finance in the order of £22m.

Jusdging by Lenny’s comments, it sounds as though he may favouring Sammi up front and Stokes on the bench. Not sure who he’d have at LM if that’s the case (Boerrigter’s a doubt) – Mulgrew? In which case, Kayal back in at CM? It’s a risk, but I can understand his doubts over someone like Stokes v Barca.

We need physical, mobile strikers to put pressure on Busquets – Balde perhaps, but surely way too raw for this game?

I just don’t feel we have enough physical strength in CM and attack to bother Barca – last year, Wanyama and Miku provided that.

Obviously, Forster will have to have another outstanding game. Him aside, Mulgrew (I’d value him more than any other player for this game), Ambrose and Samaras have a crucial part to play.

  15. “There is only £1.6 million of finance leases being repaid and the Club has no loans, overdrafts or bank borrowings.”

So if the zombies stop buying season tickets they are ****ed as have no credit line.

  16. I’m sorry but the CEO statement is absolute nonsense.

To have a retained profit with losses of 14m is just lies unless there was retained profit from the previous year substantially more than losses for this year.

If there is in fact retained profit then it’s money left from the IPO.

    Really bad set of figures.

Another 6 months trading like that with no credit facility and it’s good night at the big hoose.

    Clowns.

  17. STFBs @ 23:02,

“I was trying to show the European Cup and the Champions League as different competitions.” The argument I was addressing was that getting to the last 16 of the CL was a superior achievement to reaching a Uefa Cup or Europa league final. It could not have been hunguffery because it was an argument being advanced by many CQNrs…

Yes I’m not disputing the fact that the last sixteen in the UCL was seen among Old Firm supporters as a holy grail.

And yes many seen it as greater achievement than a UEFA cup.

Now in the Nineties IMO this position became entrenched, I believe it was because Rangers looked like the only Scottish team capable of doing this, and were in fact pouring money into the playing side to achieve this.

Everytime I heard it been reported that no Scottish Club have reached the last sixteen I thought of the many times we managed it, then looked back in awe when I realised – what I took for granted as a boy – The achievements of the Lions.

They earned it by playing pure, beautiful, inventive Football.

Sure the format had changed but the trophy looked the same and the list of past Champions didn’t change.

I would have taken a UEFA cup victory over a last sixteen UCL any day of the week.

But you are right it was a good discussion. Paul67 actually did an article saying he would rather have a UEFA cup run than UCL, as the competition was more suited to our level and we were much more likely to get European football after new year and wemore co-efficient points.

It wasn’t universally accepted by any means.

Still the extra money and kudos of UCL participation makes it a far greater Competition than the re-formatted Europa.

I’d still like us to win it though.

    Hail Hail

Hmm, that could well be Lenny’s choice. Not sure about Commons and Izzy on the left defensively, although Kris did a good pressing job on the right in last year’s match, as well as being a decent out-ball.

No idea how Pukki and Sammi would do together – have a feeling we’ll see something new tonight.

  22. Top of the morning to you all from a Fife where the day looks set to be a fine one with a light breeze and some cloud cover.

Big night tonight and let’s hope Lenny gets the right team to do the job. It’s worth remembering that a rookie got the winner against Barca the last time at Parkhead and it wasn’t the great Messi who was our undoing away from home it was left-back Jordi Alba so Barca’s threats come from all parts of the field and like us they have some talent in reserve.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Balde coming on as a late sub will break the stalemate and score a winner for us.

Wonder what odds the bookie will give me for that?
