Barca will be no better prepared, how the news works

817

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Would rather face them with Messi’ world view.  I’ve seen Lionel Messi a couple of times, it’s a bit like standing atop the Eiffel Tower, a breath-taking experience, but I don’t need to visit Paris every month to reinforce the view.  Tomorrow will be an almighty challenge against one of the sport’s all-time great teams.  Having pushed Barcelona to their absolute limits twice last season, we have no right to expect a second consecutive New Firm victory, but this is a home game at Celtic Park, we hope for a win.

The omission of Joe Ledley is a worry.  Celtic need mobility and positional awareness in all positions tomorrow, Joe brings both elements to the party, how Neil Lennon compensates for his enforced absence in central midfield will be a key decision.

I also don’t subscribe to the view that, unlike a year ago, Barca will know what to expect this time.  Celtic’s 2-1 victory last season came after they took Barca to added time at the Camp Nou before Barca got their winner.  Barcelona knew exactly what to expect, they just didn’t know what to do about it.  I see no reason why they will be any better tutored this time.  Unless they’ve figured out a way of making wee guys jump higher than big guys.

We are fast, we’re tall, we defend when necessary and we run all game.  Unless Barca decide to play for a point and defend deep, which they won’t, they will play exactly as they did last season.

On seeing an X Factor item on the news I complained, “That’s not news”, but I was challenged, “If that’s not news, what makes football news?”  Sporting and entertainment events are news if those who produce the news determine it to be so, which places considerable authority on news editors.

Charlotte Fakes revelations have shown us how news professionals, keen to distract attention from a disaster zone of a club, tried to create negative ‘news’ stories concerning Celtic.

Three years ago the Green Brigade displayed a banner at Celtic Park which went largely uncommented upon for several days.  Four days after the event, the banner became a nationwide news story, TV news reported it and it made a Radio 5 Live morning discussion programme.

The delay in the item becoming ‘news’ was the most important part of the story.  It wasn’t news until the news editors had been convinced otherwise.  The damage to Celtic’s reputation was considerable.

Today news editors who ran that story three years ago have an interesting dilemma.  Do they run a story about an alarming message being displayed at a football ground, or without being lobbied, is that not a story?

Celtic don’t spend money trying to get negative stories about other clubs in the newspapers, but this is surely not exclusively the way the ‘news’ industry works.

We shouldn’t have to wait on a whistle-blower to shine a light on what happened three years ago, journalists know when they have been lobbied, and that’s the real story, which is not dependent on unfathomable leaks.

  2. YES ? NO? What to do. How to vote. Catholics in Scotland viewing Ibrox and the Squaddies would I’m sure be less inclined to vote YES now. Just how I feel. I’m Catholic and if I were voting today it would NO. The sectarianism has been around for generations. There do not appear to be any reasons to think it may get worse with the status quo however a change to YES is unpredictable.

    weeminger,

It wasnt a straight yes or no question though was it, I asked when was the last time you heard a sectarian song at Celtic Park, my point is exactly what I think you seem to be missing, most dont know and dont care so if AT says we’re no better than them then thats just wrong and a lie, so when he is bringing us into storys’ about their savagery then he’s telling the world we’re no any better. That grinds my gears

We’re not in the rags down there, as a rule. Do I think most Scots are genuine neutrals? No. I lived in England for several years and those that had any thoughts at all on us didn’t think we were as bad.

It’s also worth remembering C4 news is national, it is generally watched by people of a more enquiring mind than might watch BBC or ITV news.

And finally would you rather the story was reported with a slight whiff of whatabouttery or not reported at all, because that’s where we were headed before?

As I’m really badly pointing out to TET, C4 news is a minority news programme with an audience that view themselves as more questioning of MSM. Some (not many I grant you) will ask why were are different.

To be honest, I’ve never really understood why anybody thought AT was a “friend of Celtic”. He stated from the outset that he wasn’t interested in anything other than the failing of corporate governance at the club, and at the SFA.

A wee vignette about the Thompson guy from Channel 4.

Last season he tweeted about the magnificent 50,000 plus crowd at a sevco game (Think it was against Queens Park).

Very quickly, many people put him right, that the crowd was a lot, LOT less than that.

He did correct himself, but blamed it on the fact he had not checked out the information he had been given. That is what he said!

This is a person who purports to be a journalist, yet quite easily makes shite up and hope it doesn’t get spotted.

(He will admit to publishing shite when challenged – but when challenged, will blame it on the fact he hasn’t checked the facts- BRILLIANT).

I’m sure he is impartial when reporting from Syria, Lebanon, etc.

It seems he only has a blind spot when it comes to sevco supporters.

I also lived in england, and maybe it was where I was, but the Irish were seen as second class, ahead of the coloured people, but still seen as inferior.

I must admit, religion didn’t seem to enter the fray, just the anti Irish thing.

People are thick, they need leaders, they need to be told what to believe, and they gorge themselfs on whatever is fed to them.

  13. Let’s get this clear, Scotland is not Mississippi in the ‘fifties nor is it Germany in the ‘thirties. But that exhibition at Ibrox on Saturday was an outrage. Here you had our armed forces, ‘our brave boys’, whatever, gleefully endorsing a celebration of anti-Catholic bigotry. Who’s in charge of these people?

Surely my father and his brothers didn’t fight WW2 for this?

“I didn’t buy it though, my opinion was it was hunguffery, trying to show the European Cup and the Champions League as different competitions.”

The argument I was addressing was that getting to the last 16 of the CL was a superior achievement to reaching a Uefa Cup or Europa league final.

It could not have been hunguffery because it was an argument being advanced by many CQNrs on here and, though we have a few visiting huns, it was an argument largely made by Celtic fans.

It only became perceived as hunguffery because the deid club did it first in 2006 but we were agreeing that this was the next step in 2004 and 2005, so the revision to say it was not superior could more easily be portrayed as timguffery or plain sour grapes.

I still believe it is harder to get out of CL groups to last 16 than it is to get to a Uefa final (and lose). Since the 90s we have seen Casino Salzburg (now Red Bull Salzburg), Bordeaux, Lazio, Alaves, Sporting Lisbon, Middlesborough, Espanyol, Rangers, Bremen, Fulham, Braga and Bilbao all achieve the same status as losing finalists that we did.

Last 16 CL does not see anywhere near as many surprise teams reach that level. Among the ones to do so, Rangers and Apoel Limassol stand out, though Apoel have also made it to the quarter-final

    stage.

I know Seville was a mystical and magical period for our support but, as a sporting achievement, I cannot accept that it betters reaching last 16 stage of CL.

As I talk(write) through this whole thing I can only see one reason. Pressure from editors. If he continues to write about Rangers and never talks about us, he’s in danger of being seen as unobjective and pursuing some kind of vendetta.

I think if he’d really wanted to bring us into with an ‘opposite controversy’ the poppy protest from the GB would be involved. As it is a mention that sectarian singing occurs at CP is of relatively little consequence.

Yes, and I’m saying that from my point of view it’s far better the story is reported even with the unneeded mention of us than not at all.

Stories about the failings of Rangers are not anti-Rangers, nor are they necessarily anything to do with Celtic.

If anybody thinks for one second, he wouldn’t go after us with the same zeal if there was a similar story, they are very much mistaken.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the blatant, overt, anti Irish / Catholic manifestations in Scotland, resulted in a return to the Faith of those who have lapsed?

Faith of our Fathers stuff, eh?

At least it may help the continuance of the Faith to the next generation, as it would appear to be only a matter of time before Catholics will be a tiny minority in Scotland and not due to any SNP policies.
