Barca will be no better prepared, how the news works

817

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Would rather face them with Messi’ world view.  I’ve seen Lionel Messi a couple of times, it’s a bit like standing atop the Eiffel Tower, a breath-taking experience, but I don’t need to visit Paris every month to reinforce the view.  Tomorrow will be an almighty challenge against one of the sport’s all-time great teams.  Having pushed Barcelona to their absolute limits twice last season, we have no right to expect a second consecutive New Firm victory, but this is a home game at Celtic Park, we hope for a win.

The omission of Joe Ledley is a worry.  Celtic need mobility and positional awareness in all positions tomorrow, Joe brings both elements to the party, how Neil Lennon compensates for his enforced absence in central midfield will be a key decision.

I also don’t subscribe to the view that, unlike a year ago, Barca will know what to expect this time.  Celtic’s 2-1 victory last season came after they took Barca to added time at the Camp Nou before Barca got their winner.  Barcelona knew exactly what to expect, they just didn’t know what to do about it.  I see no reason why they will be any better tutored this time.  Unless they’ve figured out a way of making wee guys jump higher than big guys.

We are fast, we’re tall, we defend when necessary and we run all game.  Unless Barca decide to play for a point and defend deep, which they won’t, they will play exactly as they did last season.

On seeing an X Factor item on the news I complained, “That’s not news”, but I was challenged, “If that’s not news, what makes football news?”  Sporting and entertainment events are news if those who produce the news determine it to be so, which places considerable authority on news editors.

Charlotte Fakes revelations have shown us how news professionals, keen to distract attention from a disaster zone of a club, tried to create negative ‘news’ stories concerning Celtic.

Three years ago the Green Brigade displayed a banner at Celtic Park which went largely uncommented upon for several days.  Four days after the event, the banner became a nationwide news story, TV news reported it and it made a Radio 5 Live morning discussion programme.

The delay in the item becoming ‘news’ was the most important part of the story.  It wasn’t news until the news editors had been convinced otherwise.  The damage to Celtic’s reputation was considerable.

Today news editors who ran that story three years ago have an interesting dilemma.  Do they run a story about an alarming message being displayed at a football ground, or without being lobbied, is that not a story?

Celtic don’t spend money trying to get negative stories about other clubs in the newspapers, but this is surely not exclusively the way the ‘news’ industry works.

We shouldn’t have to wait on a whistle-blower to shine a light on what happened three years ago, journalists know when they have been lobbied, and that’s the real story, which is not dependent on unfathomable leaks.

If it’s the Union that causes sectarianism how come it only manifests itself in Scotland?

From what I can see sectarianism is a Scottish issue, nothing to do with England, the English or the Union.

Not true. no dogs, no blacks, no Irish. appeared on many b&b’s up and down this sceptered isle. Can a catholic become head of the state (king or queen), Nope. Having said that you are probably correct in saying it is not as rife in wales or England as the west of Scotland. However race is a far greater problem there than here, in some ways this explains the popularity of ukip amongst middle Englanders.

I dont think race is any more a problem down south than it is here, the ukip stuff is about getting out of europe.

    Hi ,

l thought you did a good job of correcting the impression, that Chairbhoy had taken. It was just when you wrote (see below) l thought l would let you know the rough date. Take care!

I do not know when the blog started as I was not here at the very beginning but, when I did join, the view expressed above was a commonplace one

When was the last time you heard a sectarian song being belted out at Celtic Park ?

I would defend Salmond on that, as I thought he meant the Celtic K, association. It’s how they identify that statement, thats the worry.

I am having a laugh for it is only a dream. Nevertheless the point of independence remains valid. The

Orange Order/Unionists and a large proportion of the huns want to stay as part of the UK- You would think that would be enough to cause you to want separation from the right wing proddie unionists who presently rule us. Also within a short period Scotland will be a republic, it’s just not politically expedient for the Yes Campaign to state that and it is another major reason to vote for change. The other reason is I want my children to work here in the west of Scotland and not have to travel like I have had to do to find work. There are quite literally hundreds and maybe thousands of folk working on North Sea Projects but based in London. Eg. BP’s Clare Ridge Project. Also in all my time in London I have yet to see an Oil Rig. I want all Scots to have the dignity of a decent job and earning a living wage. Under the numerous Unionist Governments we have had: this has never ever been achieved. Not a lot to ask for

I think a few guys have missed the point of zimmerman’s earlier post re; Jim Delahunt

I suspect he meant he JD wouldn’t be short of Celtic fans calling in, as in he wouldn’t need to go looking for Celtic fans to call in. and perhaps, that being so, JD would have to watch what he might say..

That’s what I think he meant

I just don’t see where he is being anti JD

    Anyway, just sayin

    ……………………………………………….

Sorry if anyone thought I was trying to have a go at Zimmerman. Not at all. He referred to JD as ‘Delahun’ which looked like a deliberate linking of JD to sympathies towards THEM. I was just trying to correct a misperception. No hassle intended whatsoever.

I’m fairly sure that Jim Delahunt and the other guy who presented tonight’s programme, Gerry MCCulloch are constrained in what they are allowed to say. I do feel, however, that both of them in recent months have slipped in comments and little pieces of information that took certain discussions into areas that the Huns, their supporters and directors would not have wanted to go. I can remember Gerry McCulloch one night after a Rangers man was complaining about the embarrassing and potentially dangerous public utterances of Charles Green, said “i’ll play you a snippet of an interview I did with Charles a couple of months ago.” It was the interview that Charles thanked the Huns fans for their backing and ended by saying “No Surrender”.

“You would think that would be enough to cause you to want separation from the right wing proddie unionists who presently rule us.”

As presently means soon (as opposed to currently) you are undermining your point a wee bit :-)

” Also within a short period Scotland will be a republic, it’s just not politically expedient for the Yes Campaign to state that and it is another major reason to vote for change.”

A bit disingenuous. The reason it is not politically expedient is that there are a large number of monarchists here and there are many who will not vote Yes unless Queenie gets to rule over us still. There is no compelling evidence that Scotland is any more ready to vote for a Republic any time soon. One of the few avowed Republicans in the SNP, Roseanna Cunningham, is willing to sacrifice that view and keep stum to serve party discipline.

  13. TOSB

On the comment you made about “sliipin in little bits of info” etc I definitely agree with you

I’m pretty sure JD knew exactly what he was doing :-)

Been trying all day to find out the criteria used in deciding just who made up the 400 servicemen, and women, who attended the bigot feast at the weekend, as in were they following orders, or in some way “volunteers”. Either way it is clear, to me at least, that virtually every one of them would have been at home in the crowd as they were on the pitch. As such they should not have been in uniform at all, officers included. The army only has one regiment in Scotland, and I cannot see how that regiment can ever again set foot in Ireland, in any capacity. And I hope that view is shared across the Irish Sea.

As canalamar says, the levels of racism are probably broadly comparable in Scotland and England. However, your post raises an interesting thought.

Imagine there was a football team in England who openly refused to sign black players for decades. Imagine their fans continued to sing racist songs and their players marched out behind St George’s cross and the UJ. Imagine that team had invited soldiers onto the pitch who joined in with the racism and held up scarves saying “keep England white”.

I can guarantee that it would be front page news and headlines on TV. Cameron would be wringing his hands, heads would roll and outrage would abound.

In Scotland it’s shrugs all round, and Timmy gets abuse simply for being concerned.

    Independence worries me.

No society is perfect there will always be a minority that is oppressed, of that i am saddened and sure of. There is racism here I would never say otherwise. UKIP may ostensibly be about getting out of Europe, but you don’t need to scratch the surface to hard to see where these same policies would lead too. I am fairly confident that we will never have parties like the BNP and UKIP on council let alone government seats in Scotland, certainly in my lifetime (never say never though). My hope for an independent Scotland would be that we for the 1st time in our history have a written constitution, which ensures things such as a republic, free healthcare and education. Just because Salmond and the SNP take us to the referendum there is no chance that should they win they will have everything they want. within years, should we vote yes I would fully expect another referendum on should we retain the monarchy.
