Barca will be no better prepared, how the news works

817

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Would rather face them with Messi’ world view.  I’ve seen Lionel Messi a couple of times, it’s a bit like standing atop the Eiffel Tower, a breath-taking experience, but I don’t need to visit Paris every month to reinforce the view.  Tomorrow will be an almighty challenge against one of the sport’s all-time great teams.  Having pushed Barcelona to their absolute limits twice last season, we have no right to expect a second consecutive New Firm victory, but this is a home game at Celtic Park, we hope for a win.

The omission of Joe Ledley is a worry.  Celtic need mobility and positional awareness in all positions tomorrow, Joe brings both elements to the party, how Neil Lennon compensates for his enforced absence in central midfield will be a key decision.

I also don’t subscribe to the view that, unlike a year ago, Barca will know what to expect this time.  Celtic’s 2-1 victory last season came after they took Barca to added time at the Camp Nou before Barca got their winner.  Barcelona knew exactly what to expect, they just didn’t know what to do about it.  I see no reason why they will be any better tutored this time.  Unless they’ve figured out a way of making wee guys jump higher than big guys.

We are fast, we’re tall, we defend when necessary and we run all game.  Unless Barca decide to play for a point and defend deep, which they won’t, they will play exactly as they did last season.

On seeing an X Factor item on the news I complained, “That’s not news”, but I was challenged, “If that’s not news, what makes football news?”  Sporting and entertainment events are news if those who produce the news determine it to be so, which places considerable authority on news editors.

Charlotte Fakes revelations have shown us how news professionals, keen to distract attention from a disaster zone of a club, tried to create negative ‘news’ stories concerning Celtic.

Three years ago the Green Brigade displayed a banner at Celtic Park which went largely uncommented upon for several days.  Four days after the event, the banner became a nationwide news story, TV news reported it and it made a Radio 5 Live morning discussion programme.

The delay in the item becoming ‘news’ was the most important part of the story.  It wasn’t news until the news editors had been convinced otherwise.  The damage to Celtic’s reputation was considerable.

Today news editors who ran that story three years ago have an interesting dilemma.  Do they run a story about an alarming message being displayed at a football ground, or without being lobbied, is that not a story?

Celtic don’t spend money trying to get negative stories about other clubs in the newspapers, but this is surely not exclusively the way the ‘news’ industry works.

We shouldn’t have to wait on a whistle-blower to shine a light on what happened three years ago, journalists know when they have been lobbied, and that’s the real story, which is not dependent on unfathomable leaks.

  1. Regarding Saturday’s bigotfest, the so called sports journalist reporting on the game in today’s Herald said that the half time show was a wonderful spectacle. Another paper binned, soon will only be able to read Catholic Observer and the Celtic View, and CQN of course.

    Truly sickening “journalism”

evel = level (or ‘evil’) ……take your pick….LOL

  3. The bigotfest was a disgrace. The silence of all the political parties is an even bigger disgrace. And the biggest disgrace of all is the silence of Scotland’ s media. How can we say we have freedom of the press? They are cowards.

    Nou Camp,

are there still tickets available and how much do they cost? Had tickets for the Celtic section last year, 37 Euros. The lower tiers are pricier 60-70 plus

Also i’ve never been to the Nou Camp…what’s the view like in the away section,

I was pleasantly surprised at how goof the view was, given how high up you actually are. Was in the second tier a few years back when big John scored in the

Taxi driver friend of mine picked 2 paras and took them to doom dome on Satuerday. One was English and the other one he went to an RC school with. He noticed a K B tattoo on his arm. He was tempted to reverse over him when he took his kit bag out of the boot.

Journos were probably enjoying HT ‘refreshments’ & took BFDJ’s word for what happened.

Not to worry, Rob McLean & Pat Nevin will bravely tell all.

  9. If I am honest if they had allowed the armed forces to march on and off the park in a dignified manner (I know) I could have accepted it without agreeing with it.

The thing that concerns me most is it was not just daft young laddies getting carried away, it was grown men and some appeared to be senior ratings. It would be interesting to find out how it was decided who would attend , was it on a voluntary basis or were they ordered to attend i.e were they actually working or was it a jolly.

It amazes me how the huns seem to think that the armed forces represent only the huns and that it is only good protestant men who fight or have fought for this country.I have had members of my family fought for this country going back to the Boer war, First and Second world wars and the Korean war and also relatives who have served in peacetime.None of them had protestant bone in there bodies and were off Irish stock.

The ridiculous display on Saturday was an affront to any one who has served in the forces and I am sure that a lot who are serving now will be extremely uncomfortable with what they witnessed, wether here voice will be heard is another matteer.

  15. Getting more and more concerned at the total lack of concern or even interest by the likes of Salmon with the events in Govan on Saturday. Given the SNP’s track record on the issue, I would be very very afraid of a Yes vote next September. Appeasement (at the very least), if not downright acquiescence and endorsement of the bigot seems to be what makes them tick in the West of Scotland. Frightening prospect.

Re Saturday`s tasteless and sectarian events at the Zombie Crypt:-

I heard that half time lasted 30 minutes on Saturday. According to FIFA that is against the laws of the game. Law 7 states:-

    “Half-time interval

Players are entitled to an interval at half-time.

The half-time interval must not exceed 15 minutes.

Competition rules must state the duration of the half-time interval.

The duration of the half-time interval may be altered only with the consent of the referee”

    http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/footballdevelopment/technicalsupport/refereeing/laws-of-the-game/law/newsid=1290851.html

I think the referee has some questions to answer as to why the half time interval exceeded 15 minutes.

  18. Robin Bhoy: You are missing the point about imdependence. The only way we will eradicate this poison and Scotland’s shame is by being independent. Their evilness will always be there whilst the status quo prevails. We have all seen and suffered the consequences of their small minded bitterness and none more so than my Da who faced discrimination daily in his search for a job in Glasgow in the 60’s & 70’s. hopefully once we are independent the Unionists will feck off to Ulster or some bloody desert island. Independence is our only hope!

  19. I have not viewed any footage of what happened at Ibrox on Saturday and nor will I.

Just like I never go on to any of their websites to read what their fans are saying.

Just like I never watch any of their games on the tv.

    Simply not interested.

I sincerely hope we never have to play that team from Ibrox again.

Good. Was 16s when I wrote bet but just missed. A near 10/1 return on stake, still good :)

Good start to a huge week.

  21. For many years something had troubled my dad.

His great uncle Tam had been killed in France in the First World War and no member of the family present and past had been to pay respects at his grave.

Tam was 22 and apparently the families pride and joy.

Unfortunately, as the song goes he perished with countless others on the green fields if France.

A whole generation butchered and slain.

Anyway, we booked a pre Christmas booze bus and were dropped off in Calais. The others went off to the hypermarkets for the bevvy and we arranged to meet the bus later in the day.

A taxi to Bethune and half an hour later we were greeted by what seemed like thousands of immaculately kept graves. Each kid buried there was younger than the next.

Anyway, said a few prayers , took a few pictures and left.

My faither grabbed my arm on the way back and thanked me for keeping him company and he was relieved to have made this journey on behalf of the family now gone who had longed to go but were unable to.

Uncle Tam was a Celtic supporter like all our family have been and always will be.

I wonder what Uncle Tam would have made of the goings on at the Bigotdome on Saturday ?

Shame on them, I take it as a personal slur on his memory!

    Hail Hail

“BTW Noticed STFBs stating what the blog reaction to the Seville match was.

Now i didn’t know the blog was that old. I remember you first posting (I was a lurking), now can you remember what year you started posting and when the blog kicked (amortized) off.”

What I stated was that “post-Seville” we rated CL last 16 as the next level to surpassing a UEFA final. That view was being expressed on the blog after Seville but not immediately afterwards.

I do not know when the blog started as I was not here at the very beginning but, when I did join, the view expressed above was a commonplace one
