Tavernier breaks John Greig, Allan McGregor records

187

In the eight years Newco have been a topflight club, James Tavernier has lost more league games against Celtic than any player who has played for either of the Rangerses since they first faced Celtic in league action in 1892.

The fullback has tasted league defeat 15 times against Celtic, one more than previous record loser and Oldco captain, John Greig – who had the misfortune of playing against the Lisbon Lions.

Tavernier is also the Record League Loser for Rangerses players at Celtic Park, walking off the field “disappointed” nine times.  This is one more than the previous Loser at Celtic Park, Allan McGregor, who experienced eight league defeats in appearances for Oldco and Newco.

Since Tavernier’s first visit to Celtic Park in 2016 (a 5-1 hammering), he has won twice, although only once in front of fans, a 1-2 win during one of Celtic’s Quadruple Treble seasons.

These games are emotionally draining for fans never mind players.  Coping with being a “disappointed” loser so often cannot be easy, the poor guy will be susceptible to PTSD unless he embraces his role as the Record Loser.

If Tavernier reclaims the words “Record Loser”, he will turn them from a charged term into a badge of honour, showing what he has come through.  Not all warriors win and there is no shame in that.  Tavernier suffered for his craft, his Loser wounds are his real trophies.

Although the Newco captain is now 32, he is not finished chasing records!  In games across all competitions at Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden, he has lost a total of 19 games to Celtic.

John Greig remains the Outstanding Rangerses Loser to Celtic, having suffered a total of 24 defeats for Oldco.  Tavernier could narrow that gap to just three defeats before this month is out, setting himself up to take the all competitions record next season!  Keep chasing that dream, James!

Marvellous pictures and videos yet again. You are one of our great historians. 👍

  2. The problem is not letting our opponents into the game…

It is about letting them back into the game

Something we have done recently at Ayebrokes, and a wee while back at Celtic Park, the latter when they were down to ten man and two goals behind.

To do so requires concentration and leadership throughout the ninety minutes, plus the nine if they still have a chance. Other than that no excuses

    And no huns in Paradise

  3. To me if a player is not involved in the first team ,Is sent out on loan ,are they that good ,for example Idah is he worth £6 million, no not for me ,I hope that Brendan Rogers looks at the Serbian and Italian markets

    *aye nae corruption there wtf

  5. Some fans still think £6 million buys you very good players. It doesn’t.Unless you are helluva lucky. We won’t see Jota’s and CCVs again for that money.Sadly.

But don’t fret,I am sure our Board realise this, and will break our previous record.

    What ?

    :-):-)

  6. I see the twat commentator mentioned Celtics 63 game run,Invincibles”in the chat. ” .Then said ,” But that was in the 30s before European competitions” .His point being?.Maybe its a more worthy run, considering it was a level playing field then, and clubs did not buy success, and who said that European comps were ever included in any criteria?.Great goalscorers from before the European games with goal records are recognised ,so why not teams. Why count Trophies won?If it had been Arsenal, etc, would have been a different story.

    Celtic hold the record.

  7. I checked the ticket site today out of curiosity.

And the season card renewals page.

The saint mirren game was sold out.

I can then assume tomorrows sale is a few hundred returns from the away team.

I will login and try in morning.

Anyways that is not my main concern with Celtic Park attendances.

My real comments are around season card holders not turning up. Same seats empty game in game out.

  8. And onto the return of the hun next season. A poor decision but if ever there was a sponsor/TV driven commercial lever there it is there.

DO NOT READ. This is boring.

    The PLC has a problem.

Currently 55000 season card holders right round to what will now be needed to accommodate huns in the European split for away fans.

Brother in law and niece are card holders for 117 their seats will be in the segregation rows. Will they be able to renew or will they be offered alternatives.

Also current match by match general sale will go down from 5000 today to only 2000 for the 2 huns games next year.

    Hardly a fair methodology.

In the past when there was a huns season card sales were limited to 53000.

I wonder if renewal deadline will be held solid this year and not extended.

Use it or lose is coming to this stadium sometime.

  9. My wife brought in a daily record today for me because there was a centre 8 page special titled

    Scotlands greatest strikers

Ok. I will give it a go. 20 players

I tried in my own way. Wrote down my twenty. I knew there would be a modern bias. But dearie me and an added wtf.

Who comes up with this pish.

    Included celts

Mcgrory for the Hampden roar and a mention of playing second fiddle to hughie Gallagher.

    King Kenny. Obvs

    Stevie Chalmers.

    Mcavennie – seriously

Mcclair – one goal I think. And

Charlie nic – a talent aye a great nope.

  10. And then on to rangers players – remember this is Scotland the teams greatest strikers –

Ally mccoist – regular scorer against all the 4th tier qualifications teams. one tournament finals goal. One.

Bob mcphail – 7 goals. A great seriously.

Colin stein – for his 5 goals against the mighty Cyprus.

And the walnut on top of the whip –

Big fat Derek Johnstone – 2 goals and in my young Scotland following days he was pure dead pish.

  11. And just to consign the paper to the

    bin

Hughie Gallagher 23 goals in 20 games.

He did not get in their 20 top strikers.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! on

SS- I agree with your ST empty seats point, and IMO some of the counter opinions, which are fine, have been harsh

  13. Cheers bb.

I could be harsh in responding but have tried not to.

There is an apathy to these things that allow the rich owners to stay for a long time.

I do not think Fergus vision was to have shareholders who don’t vote or attend the agm . Or indeed have season book holders who do not attend. He wanted the supporters to have a voice and feel and behave as owners.

If the level of self entitlement is a share certificate on a wall and a renewed season card that is not used well that is unfair on the 7000 or so on the waiting lists.

    Apathy.

  14. I read today.

10500 new shareholders for the 1995 original issue.

Small shareholders made up 45% of the new structure.

For the 1999 Fergus sell off the small shareholders now made up 63% of the total structure.

30 years later we are back to control with 4 families and 3 institutions and small shareholders having around 30% only.

There can be no doubt the PLC isa well run successful business. It might last another 70 years. But I doubt it.

I read the value of the efl sky deal. And could weep of the William hill 10m for sponsorship of the Scottish leagues.

The English woman’s game will have more money within 3 years and probably bigger crowds than Scotland.

  15. Finally.

Why did so many voice their reasons for not attending. Often defensive. Paid my ticket so I can do whatever I please and then gave big reasons for not going anyway.

Reminded me of the guilt I felt telling my granny why I didn’t go to mass.

  16. Finally finally.

Pat O’Callaghan and the Irish Olympic team.

Celtic sent a team to Dublin in 1924 to raise funds to send the Olympic team to Amsterdam.

Celtic beat the Irish free state 3-0

  17. Good morning all from a lovely 11 degree and dry Garngad, hopefuly hit 21 with sun this afternoon.

1 more sleep to we roll up at Celtic Park and see the bhoys put on a show.

SS I think most people would agree with you about everyone using their ticket or allowing someone to use it but dearie me dragging it on for 3, 4 or 5 days. 9

Let’s all get behind the common cause here, wallop Der Hun.

I hope everyone enjoys a lovely day today in fine weather, we are due it after about 2 years of constant rain, I have so much to do in the Garden but cannot get to it as its either pissing down at the weekend or I am off watching Celtic. 😎😎😎

Bloody Royal called me about knee operation and said it would be in next month and my pre op assessment lasts for a year wtf. Told her I was off to Tenerife on 7 July, oh you cannot get the operation until after that, I asked when she’s and about September I told her I am away again in October but if she gives me a date I could move October break, oh we cannot give you a date….aaaarrrggghhh.

Surely it would make sense booking people in on dates?

    D. :)
