Tavernier breaks John Greig, Allan McGregor records

187

In the eight years Newco have been a topflight club, James Tavernier has lost more league games against Celtic than any player who has played for either of the Rangerses since they first faced Celtic in league action in 1892.

The fullback has tasted league defeat 15 times against Celtic, one more than previous record loser and Oldco captain, John Greig – who had the misfortune of playing against the Lisbon Lions.

Tavernier is also the Record League Loser for Rangerses players at Celtic Park, walking off the field “disappointed” nine times.  This is one more than the previous Loser at Celtic Park, Allan McGregor, who experienced eight league defeats in appearances for Oldco and Newco.

Since Tavernier’s first visit to Celtic Park in 2016 (a 5-1 hammering), he has won twice, although only once in front of fans, a 1-2 win during one of Celtic’s Quadruple Treble seasons.

These games are emotionally draining for fans never mind players.  Coping with being a “disappointed” loser so often cannot be easy, the poor guy will be susceptible to PTSD unless he embraces his role as the Record Loser.

If Tavernier reclaims the words “Record Loser”, he will turn them from a charged term into a badge of honour, showing what he has come through.  Not all warriors win and there is no shame in that.  Tavernier suffered for his craft, his Loser wounds are his real trophies.

Although the Newco captain is now 32, he is not finished chasing records!  In games across all competitions at Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden, he has lost a total of 19 games to Celtic.

John Greig remains the Outstanding Rangerses Loser to Celtic, having suffered a total of 24 defeats for Oldco.  Tavernier could narrow that gap to just three defeats before this month is out, setting himself up to take the all competitions record next season!  Keep chasing that dream, James!

Statistically the 79 ten men won the league was the poorest winning team we had.

    9 losses and 6 draws.

But we had world class Danny.

And several new boys just clicked from March till May. Provan McLeod burns Aitken McAdam Conroy.

Oh and John greigs rangers were really really shite.

Half a world and half a lifetime ago.

    On another topic.

I am hopeful Brendan has this team primed to play.

No slow start. No finding our feet. No easing into the game. Hassle them they make monumental blunders.

Any win does me. 1-0 is fine. Just win.

However. Said in a don Corleone voice.

If we find ourselves 5-0 up with half hour to go, I expect the manager and the team to know the significance of that and to go chasing new records. Anything less and people in this room will be held accountable

  3. Saint Stivs on

Our invincibles were the worst team we ever had to go undefeated in a whole domestic season

It is meant in a don Corleone style.

When Sonny dies the don addressed the five families.

After the 5-0 game Brendan did not know what our record scores were. That day still annoys me.

“The watchword for us this season has not been super-confidence, rather the hope, from week to week, that we can get the job done and deliver this title. ”

Your watchword was neither confidence nor hope.

It was- the league is over – and you proclaimed that 6 weeks ago.

  6. It’s not Tavpen’s fault that the Huns decided to build a team around him for the best part of the last ten years. Utterly unbelievable thing to do.

Ten years of chaos ball and two holding midfielders. God knows how the Huns sat and watched it for so long.

  7. long may it continue paul67.

we’re going in confident with good reason and bhoy oh bhoy can BR prepare us for a derby match or what!

I know we are a better team than the huns and I know we will have the advantage of an all tim stadium but I will still be sh**ing myself unless we are 4-0 up with 2 minutes to go . I always do against them .

Skullduggery aside though , by 2.30 on Saturday we should find ourselves requiring only one more point to win the league . However , I’ll save my gloating until then so as not to tempt fate !

Spot-on. I hate when we go into these games all confident. It can sometimes come back to bite us on the ar&e.

I think we’ll win, but not getting ahead of myself. Will be a tough game against them. We also have to factor in the desperate officiating to help them out.

Would love us to spank them 3 or 4-0, but a 1-0 will do me nicely also. All but wraps the league up. 😃🇮🇪🏆🍀⚽️

Bit harsh on Tav surely Pablo? …. But accept your walking that thinnish path between bluster and legitimate confidence.

We are the superior team, but margin is narrower than any of us would like.

    I’m with Turkeybhoy’s earlier comments.

Tav is a poor defender (converted wingers often are) but a decent footballer.

Despite his amateurish attempts at defending he is a net contributor for his team … unlike others.

He’s given his all to a cause.

    He is clearly playing injured.

And what thanks does he get?

Dogs abuse from the conned Sevco masses whose expectations cannot be met.

I think it’s much less likely that we’ll see a late collapse like we did in the 3-3 game now that we’re finding a bit of fitness and form . I’d be a bit more concerned about how we start the game . Even though we comprehensively beat Hearts , they had early chances and could easily have taken the lead before we settled down . we need to put Sevco under the cosh from the off .

First time in living memory I’ve seen a headline with the words “breaks John Greig’s “ in that order.

My memory is that “John Greig breaks …… ‘s leg “ was the normal way of things.

  20. Saint Stivs on

Roy Castle is a poor comparison for anything to do with huns.

A long long time ago I recall a magazine interview in which the regular attender on the spion kop at Liverpool praised Celtic as the best he had ever seen.

Maybe before presenting an award to one of ours.

    Will try find it.

In the 6-2 game I was starting to panic when they got their second goal.

I’m sure that had I been fortunate enough to have been at the 7-2 game I wouldn’t have been able to watch as Willie Fernie took the ball and put it in the net.

    Putting on the style csc

  22. According to beIN Sports, Noussair Mazraoui was in fact onside in the build-up to De Ligt’s effort and the goal would have counted.

De Ligt was the first Bayern player to comment on the incident after the match, he said: “I don’t want to say that Real Madrid always has the referees with them but that made the difference today.

Tuchel then confirmed that the linesman apologised to him after the match.

The German said: “The linesman said sorry, but that doesn’t help at that kind of level. To raise the flag in a close decision in the last minute, and the referee as well, he does not have to whistle.

    —————————————————————————————————————————–

It was a strange one watching one of the ‘Big clubs’ getting shafted.

    It’s a pity they weren’t both eliminated.

Anyway enjoying a gin strawberry cocktail 🍸, how many measures in it I asked the wife? Two she replied, doubles 🙃

  24. It’ll be interesting to see if UEFA do anything about Tuchel’s comments after the match.

He pretty much said that the ref was a cheat.

    ——————————————————————–

After the match Tuchel didn’t hold back in his criticism of the officials, and even claimed that the incident would not have occurred had it been Los Blancos searching for a late goal.

“To raise the flag in a situation like this where you can never, ever be sure that it is offside… to have the balls, to have the guts to raise the flag in a situation like this is a huge, huge call, and it’s the wrong call,” Tuchel said during his post-match media conference.

“The referee has the chance – when he sees that we win the second ball, and we win the rebound, and we get a shot away within five seconds – not to whistle. He takes the decision to whistle.

“It’s against every rule. We accept that we lost, it is what it is. But…that would not have happened on the other side.”

UEFA could decide to punish Tuchel for alleging officiating bias.

  25. Callum Spence when Turnbull was fouled ,clear penalty maybe even a red card to the pusher, he stuck his flag up for zilch.

  26. Saint Stivs on

    https://www.thecelticwiki.com/about-celtic/celtic-finances/finance-stocks-shares/

In early 1995 the club was floated on the stock exchange. The flotation was an unqualified success (the most successful share issue ever in a football club) and was over-subscribed and raised £21M. A feature of this flotation was that ordinary fans were encouraged to buy shares. 10,500 did contributing £9M in the process, with remainder being contributed by McCann and other investors. This take up of shares placed about 40% of the issued share capital with ordinary fans. These fans had not invested for financial returns, but rather for emotional ties to the club and many share certificates were framed and hung on the wall.

One fan who took up the opportunity to invest in the club for the first time was slightly different from the rest – Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond who invested £4M and took a place on the PLC board. Desmond would be key to future issues.

The money raised by the club through this issue was used to provide working capital, and was key to funding the massive redevelopment of Celtic Park.

If we start how we can and how I think we will, I think the game will be done by half time. Just have to be slightly cautious in case we don’t turn up and they do and/or the officials decide we’re not winning it no matter what.

I’ll be sticking a bet on us winning at half time and full time and Kyogo to score 2 or more goals.

    Let’s hope I’ve not jinxed us! 😳🤷🏼‍♂️😂

Brendan and Callum know exactly what they’re doing in these situations and will have them all up for this one.

Let’s hope we have the fun he alluded to in that interview. 😃👍🏆⚽️🇮🇪🍀

Personally, I’m not mega confident for Saturday.

We have a great record this season against the second best team in the league.

I’d go as far as to say that a dreadful VAR intervention last time prevented us from winning for the third time against them.

But each game has been tight.

    We need to perform.

Any kind of victory will do me.

And I wouldn’t die in a ditch if the game is drawn.

  30. Tavpen is their greatest ever player by a mile and a half.

If not for him Sevco would be 3rd behind Hearts every year.

If you had a poll amongst us all what Sevco would you most like to tweak a hammy in training tomorrow it would be Tav at 90pc+.

I’m not trying to be funny when I say that if not for sending offs and penalties (right or wrong) and Taverniers goals n assists, Sevco would be behind Kilmarnock.

I also actually think he comes across as a decent dude.

Tavernier has been a significant player for them , and you’re right , they would be third if not for him . But Tav would be a lot less significant if it wasn’t for the refs/VAR , and Sevco might well be third if it wasn’t for them .

I have a lot more respect for Tav’s skill with a free kick , I wish we had someone as capable with free kicks around the box.

  32. onenightinlisbon on

Tavernier does not seem to buy into the “we are the people” stuff like most of the others like Cantwell does. He is most definitely a threat and to simply dismiss him as a loser reeks of their arrogance and superiority.
