BBC need to fortify or shut the doors

It doesn’t really matter to me how other people write their own history.  If Queens Park claim to be the same Club as the Queen of Clubs, they are welcome to, as long as they respectfully allow me to express scepticism.  Fortunately, Queens Park’s business model is not dependent on making such an outlandish claim.

A whole lot of nonsense has been written on the subject of a recently liquidated football club, “it was the holding company that was liquidated”, when it wasn’t actually a holding company, and then we have claims about advice from a “panel of the London Stock Exchange”, which was quickly withdrawn.

We are asked to believe that a football club cannot go out of business.  It’s an interesting thought, not one I subscribe to, but interesting nonetheless.  If you are happy with this belief, fair play to you, it doesn’t matter what anyone else believes.

I’ve met Jim Spence.  He’s a guy who emerged from the Dundee Untied fanzine world and established a reputable career in the game.  His affinity for United has never been hidden, nor should it be.  United, as all clubs, have gone through periods of turmoil but Jim has called things as he has seen them, with his own club, and with others.

This week Jim made a comment about a football club which went into liquidation.  It was more tempered than comments made by a former manager and director of the liquidated club, by the chief executive of its successor club, by all the contemporary newspaper coverage, and by the successor club’s current head of PR.  Despite this, Jim has been on the receiving end of a sustained campaign by the thought police.

Jim may privately think what those at the successor club once said, but if he also wants to express those thoughts, the consequences can be acute.

He’s not alone.  I know others in the media who have told me straight that they are not prepared to touch the Newco/Sameco subject, the resultant hassle is not what they got into journalism for.

Charlotte Fakes has given us a glimpse into how powerful people can manipulate and control Scotland.  It has given reason to pause ahead of next year’s big decisions.  The BBC and only the BBC are strong enough to stand up against bullying, you can forget the commercial media for one simple reason, this subject is the equivalent of commercial self-harm.

It wouldn’t seem like the weekend without Rangers International writing about going legal on someone or other, although I suspect they’ll be content having played to the gallery with this one and not trouble the BBC, but questions remain for the BBC, no matter what happens next.

I consume enormous volumes of BBC output every month, it is my first port of call for news, and often my last.  It is one of the best aspects of British life, but if it can be intimidated like the commercial media, there is no point in it existing in the first place.

Fortify your journalists or shut the doors.

Is it fair to assume 97 per cent of Sevco season ticket holders have no problem with Jim Spence telling the truth?

    …………………………………………….

No! That is not a fair way to look at it, but it is a disingenuous ruse sometimes employed by politicians, when it suits them.

For instance when I petitioned the Scottish Parliament some years ago asking for judges/sheriffs to register their membership of any secret societies, the then Justice Minister, Jim Wallace, said my petition was unique and I was the only person he knew of with concerns in this regard.

Of course we know that to be unadulterated pish. Many people would like to know if there are fraternal influences at play when those who decide our rights, or innocence or guilt, make their decisions.

To prove this point, in my latest (similar) petition PE01491: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/GettingInvolved/Petitions/judgesmasonregister

I am trying to attract as many signatures as possible before it closes in 51 days time.

To date I have 809, but that doesn’t mean to say that only 809 people have concerns about the influence of secret societies or sectarian organisations in Scotland.

BBC SCOTLAND says its extremely sorry that one got through the net.

    Martin Williams

    Senior News Reporter

    Monday 9 September 2013

BBC Scotland has apologised after receiving over 400 complaints about BBC Scotland presenter Jim Spence who referred to The Rangers as “the old club that died”.

Mr Spence provoked the ire of The Rangers fans after making the comments on the Sportsound radio show about attempts to end a boardroom civil war by appointing four additional non-executive directors, including former Ibrox chairman John McClelland, bus tycoon Sandy Easdale, former director Paul Murray and accountant Frank Blin.

It comes three months after the BBC Trust ruled that BBC Scotland breached The Rangers guidelines on accuracy in reports about the financial collapse of the holding company running The Rangers.

The Trust upheld two complaints that the BBC had been wrong to use the terms “new” and “old” club.

BBC Scotland says Mr Spence said during the broadcast: “John McClelland who was the chairman of the old club, some people will tell you the club, well, the club that died, possibly coming back in terms of the new chairman.” A clip of Mr Spence posted on YouTube further shows he described The Rangers, which was founded last summer after its parent company was liquidated as “the old club, the old regime”.

The Rangers Standard forum said: “It appears that (Jim Spence) has disgraced himself yet again tonight. Dishonest baiting of honest RFC fans is his only contribution.”

BBC Scotland, which carried out a review of Sportsound, has apologised to the country. A spokesman said: “Jim Spence did not state that the club had died but, in the context of a discussion about former board members joining the club, commented that there are some people who hold this particular view. I do agree that the attributed comment could have been better phrased within the live piece and I not the BBC am very sorry if you were offended by this, especially my son”

Mr Spence, a Dundee United fan, hosts Sportsound twice a week , but probably not for much longer having had a sqaure go with Chic Young in the BBC Scotland Lodge Canteen

With regards to the posts regarding Owen Coyle, I would be extremely disappointed if Celtic ever appoint him as manager of the Club. He was offered a chance to make a real impact at this Club but thought he was bigger than we were. I think he will always be an EPL relegation zone firefighter or a Championship manager. He has found his level. Good but not good enough.

On Saturday I went with my eldest boy to see Histon v Workington, he’s a season ticket holder so I tag along occasionally. Approaching half-time I says, shall I go and get us a drink? So I started walking round the ground, attendance 400 on Saturday, and about 30 yards down from us is sat Peter Grant!!! Still gobsamcked I said, “Are you Peter Grant?”, “aye pal” – proceeded to bore him with Celtic memories especially the Airdrie cup final where he made that dash to make a crunching tackle and keep the game at 1-0. Anyway, I got back and told Shay, “Peter Grant’s sat down there” (it was non-league day and I assumed he was taking in a game) but it turns out his lad Peter junior has just signed on for Histon on loan from Peterborough … and a really good game he had too!!! Made my day I can tell you, great to hear him the next day too commentating from Paradise!

All talk is ifs and maybes. Firstly, the Celtic managers seat would need to be vacant, and i don’t want that too soon as it normally reflects a poor period in the clubs results or a good manager being poached – neither of which i desire.

However, if NFL decided he’d had enough and left the game altogether then i’d hope the board would look to appoint the best man possible…..and i hope the best man possible is not Owen Coyle.
