Being formed by immigrants still has power to shock

1162

A club formed by the Irish immigrant population sends best wishes to Scotland and Ireland. Read all about it! It’s as though our heritage still has the power to shock. How timely the outrage came hours before Celtic launched their “We are Celtic – and we say No To Racism” initiative.  This morning Scott Brown reminded us, “Celtic has been a club open to all people since its formation in 1888”.  Stick to task, Celtic.

Congratulations to our former boss, Martin O’Neill, in getting the Irish to at least the knock-out round. Commiserations to our other former boss, Gordon Strachan. Gordon will be feeling sore right now but he should lick his wounds and stick to task. He got the better of Ireland on their head-to-head and came within a whisker of also getting the better of Poland. The loss in Georgia was typical Scotland – you cannot change everything in two years, while Ireland taking four points from six off Germany is inexplicable.

Gordon is by far the best man to take Scotland the World Cup 2018 qualifiers; get on with it.

We can add Brian McClair to that list.

Being an ex Celtic player will get you the treatment. Or a Scottish born player electing to represent Ireland.

I compare the veritable knocking over of chairs in the rush to convict Tonev last year with the selective hearing and shoulder shrugging when Celtic players were subjected to sectarian epithets.

The standard of proof in both was so dramatically different.

They looked for reasons to convict Tonev and looked for reasons to excuse those who used sectarian epithets.

The authorities showed the same I-don’t-want-to-know default setting when MacAskill couldn’t hear Poundland rocking to unlawful sectarian abuse.

With the zealous-to-excess enforcement of the Offensive Behaviour at Football Grounds law, it is abundantly clear that the decision not to prosecute or even admit to what took place prior to it was in itself a political decision.

Effectively, “until we can have a law that criminalizes all other football fans, we will generally ignore the sectarian bile from the mob in blue and orange.”

Hence the “they’re all as bad as one another” rationale, which was just an excuse for their inaction when confronted with law breaking on an industrial scale.

    Hope you are well.

of course its nonsense … its pish that is posted on a free blog … you get what you pay for.

As for the greatest Celtic manager…. I agree that neither would be he …. for that is me! Or at least it would be, if someone at Celtic would read this blog, and hire me! :)

  5. Mike,

Maybe utter pish was a bit strong :)

Of course, this means that if someone has the audacity to disagree with me, I will now point this out!

And when they ask where did I come up with this nonsense, I’m going to say that the venerable CQN’er Geordie said so, so it must be right!! :)

Rome …. my second favourite city in the world (Paris just edges it) …. but I can still remember my first night in Rome, and seeing the Vatican ….. you never forget feelings like that! 15 years on, and the thought of it still gives me goosebumps!

Dont have a lot of regrets in life… but one of them is about Rome …. my moral theology prof in grad school (Fr. Fuchs S.J. … one of my favourite professors) wanted me to go to Rome to do my doctoral work at the Gregorian, (which would have been amazing!), but I ended up going to law school instead.

a few years studying in Rome would have been amazing!!!

sometimes wonder what path my life would have taken had I spent that time in Rome…. probably would have seen some better football than in halifax!

  15. Friday night and it’s all calm on here, good to see. Only one more week till proper football returns, I hope that all the bevvy merchants have a good day tomorrow, I am having a wee break from my usual weekend indulgences so will keep my ration for my Sunday trip to Glasgow with the Mrs.

An afternoon of John Lewis and the rest of Buchanan St will see me in need of a refreshment..

  16. Neganon2.

Rome, you will be hard pushed to do it all in a weekend, for me the Pantheon is the pick of the monuments, the Cafe Antica nearby does great coffee, well worth a vist. If you want more casual mid priced restaurants , the Jewish Ghetto area is also worth a visit.

  17. On Neil McCann…

It was an absolute disgrace to try to blame the county’s Captain for that first goal.

An absolute nonsense, Lewandowski went on a 40 metre run and scored an off-side goal, picking the ball up at the edge of the box.

What does Brown do, even if he was in his correct position according to Sage McCann how does he stop him obstruct or out-sprint him?

    A total nonsense.

The other more salient points were, what was Darren Fletcher doing? He was playing to the right of Brown the whole game. At the goal he was far left, possibly following instructions to close down the threat from the Polish right flank.

Then there were the four defenders, yes four in a row zonal marking while the best striker on the planet races towards them down the channel.

If you look a Scott’s role in the German game, where he played right in front of the back four he constantly closed down the space in front of him, he was at it constantly, so much so he was substituted as he’d ran himself into the ground. Against Poland his role was different, playing along side Darren Fletcher.

Neil McCann also said that the goal being off-side was irrelevant, wonder if that had been Rangers in Europe what his view would have been.

I remember at half-time in the Georgia game he was asked to analyse what was going wrong for Scotland, his indepth analysis – no spark, that was it, no follow up, no suggestions on tactics or personnel, just – no spark.

Could be the reason despite his obvious talents, he was a very limited Footballer and never made a Coach.

WGS has got something Neil McCann never had – a Football brain.

Still might be wrong, maybe Gordon heard the great sage and ensured someone packed the “spark” in the aul kit bag for the Poland game.
