Breaking down packed midfields

678

Celtic faced a familiar problem yesterday.  Hearts packed the midfield, which sat close to their defensive line, making it difficult for Celtic to get through, over or wide.  Their best chance in the first half actually came from a Hearts corner kick, one of the few occasions the visitors ventured forward.

Sure, we need to beat Rangers, but dealing with the challenge of teams sitting tight and packing midfield will be key to winning the SPL, and that starts at Perth on Sunday.  St Johnstone will not be in confident mood after their 0-3 pasting at home yesterday, so you can expect them to sit three central midfielders in front of the defence.

  1. Kitalba – I don’t think folk realise that when everybody is fit and Lenny puts out his 1st choice team and formation then we have NOBODY in the team who can play that right hand side of midfield role other than Broonie. I was concerned throughout the summer that when Broonie goes through his injury period that we would once again have to change the entire shape of them team as we don’t have anyone who can be a direct replacement. Nobody else can cover the whole right side aswell as tucking in centrally when defending. Broonie may get on a lot of people’s wick but he is absolutely crucial to how Lenny wants the team to play. As important as Izzy is. We are literally a different team without those 2.

Of course little did I realise that whilst Broonie was out we would also have another 6 first teamers sitting beside him so the shape would have to be changed anyway.

You may be right in all you say about Gentile (and he played a long time ago, so my memory may be well wrong) but I still think of him as a right cynical thug on the football field.

  5. Lads I’m going to disagree on this Scott Brown debate, he should not be in this team untill he proves himself.

The dundee utd game is a perfect example, we were in control of that game and loovens and dan were solid and we were winning games with ease.

Neil then takes loovens off again and he puts brown on and for me the last few weeks we have been looking settled and he’s disrupting a settled team.

No wonder rangers have won the title in the last 3 years because they stick with a settled team.

  6. Kitalba – I also started writing an article entitled “Scott Brown Cost Us The League” but couldn’t get it to the stage I was happy with it. Off the top of my head, so these stats may be wrong, we dropped points in 8 league games last year. Brown didn’t play in 6 of those 8. When Brown didn’t play Lenny had to change the entire shape of the side.

Folk say Brown is like a headless chicken but that is exactly what Lenny asks him to do. I don’t think folk realise that. Lenny asks him to use his engine to cover the whole right side, which involves pushing forward to give width in attack, or tucking in behind an advancing full back. When defending he is also asked to tuck more centrally, helping out the central midfield making us harder to pass through but also due to his engine covering any fullback or late run from a wide midfielder on the right hand side.

It was our ability to be very narrow in defense but burst onto alot of width when attacking that was such a success last year as it is something teams find very hard to deal with. Brown is the player that allows our midfield to flex like that in attack and defense.

    He is crucial.

  7. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

The huns have a settled team because they hardly have a squad, let’s not rewrite history.

We don’t see what goes on in training so have no idea how he compares in that environment. Against Dundee United and Hearts, he replaced Loovens who has been struggling injury wise and will now probably miss the next game.

As Loovens was struggling, replacing him with Brown allowing Wanyama to stay on the park and going back into centre back was the best solution. Against Dundee United, the only defensive player on the bench was Twardzick and it would have been too much to expect him to slot into centre back. Against Hearts, Wilson was on the bench but probably not as match fit as Scott Brown. In both games, I think that was the best option. perhaps Ki could have came on earlier instead of Brown but it’s pretty much of a muchness.

I don’t think he’ll get a start in the next couple of games but getting some game time is bound to help him get back to full fitness.

Gentile was certainly cynical —– he is an Italian . . I am not convinced that he was a thug – but opinions /opinions .

I remember Gentile calling Souness — ” a dirty coward ” as he provided the punditry on a Sampdoria game

When I think of thugs in football I tend to think of people like Walter Kidd, Bobby Shearer, Roberts, Hurlock, Ian Black etc

  12. Scott Brown

Since Neil Lennon took over as manager we have played 64 league games. Average points per game 2.45.

With Scott Brown starting we have won 2.63 points per game. Without him starting we have won 2.25 points per game. We win more points with him in the team, surely football is about winning points.

Those stats show why he is important to the manager and the team.

As for those who criticise his behaviour on Saturday, did you say the same when Neil Lennon and Alan Thompson got involved in spats with nyaffs like Ian Black and the likes. Some posters are right, if Scott’s name was Sean he would get a lot less criticism on here.

    …………………….

Would Billy McNeil, Andy Lynch, Danny McGrain, Roy Aitken, Paul McStay, Tom Boyd, Paul Lambert or Jackie McNamara behaved like that as Celtic Captain?

BTW I missed out Lennon as he was at times just as bad if not worse than Brown and I would have stripped him of the Captaincy if I was the Manager at the time. I still loved him as a player, but he behaved in a manner unbecoming of his position1

  17. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo – If he had been alive in Jane Austen’s time, he would have been a George Wickham figure, trying to blackmail well-to-do families into letting him marry into them lest he disgrace their stupidest daughter.

Well, neither of us know what was said – only Hamill and Brown know that.

There were two of them involved in the incident and both of them have a reputation for noising up opponents – yet you are only criticising Scott Brown.

It’s not like Broony dived inside the penalty area to con a penalty or elbowed an opponent in an off the ball incident – I understand the media are reacting like a nothing verbal exchange involving an employee of Celtic is worthy of blanket coverage, but I don’t understand why any Celtic supporter feels it’s such a big deal.

  19. FFS Enough with the ” your a hun because you dis-agree with me” crap,,,,,,,some rate Brown and some dont!!!

In my opinion Brown is behind Kayal,Wanyama and Ledley(when fit) ,,,,with regards to the Hearts game, both Kayal and Wanyama were winning the ball most of the time without giving away cheap fouls,Brown on the other hand came on and just started giving needless fouls away, and niggling at Hearts players,,for me that’s why we should stick with Kayal and Wanyama, they are far more effective at what they do!!!

Just my opinion mind,,,does not make me a bad person,,,,or a hun!!!

  20. If everyone is honest Scott Brown has played 1 great game for us and that’s against rangers when he scored.

Only a month ago on here the team were getting slaughtered for showing no fight & commitment. Now that we are we shouldn’t?

Rangers will put 5 in midfield when they visit & try to bully us. I definitely want Scott Brown in our team on the 28th. HH

  24. I’ve not been on, not even lurking… Could CQN be any more bizarre sometimes? Scott Brown – there’s no debate, he is our captain and very, very often our best player. Neil Lennon’s Celtic team are better with Scott Brown.

Truth be told there isn’t a player in the squad (Cha aside, I’m sorry to say) that any Celtic fan should have a problem with. They all have qualities and the vast majority are at an age where they can only improve. We could do with a couple of experienced heads, who have comparable ability. That’s pretty much the end of the discussion…

Wonder if Brown is just the next; Aitken, Grant… Lennon? Each a combative midfielder who received criticism for perceived gaps in the game. Peter Grant, perhaps fairly, but Brown, Aitken and Lennon were much better players than they got credit for, in their own unique ways.

I’m chuffed for Forster. He’s a talent, and we should embrace that and enjoy him maturing in a Celtic jersey, I suspect it will be well worth it.
