Breaking down packed midfields

678

Celtic faced a familiar problem yesterday.  Hearts packed the midfield, which sat close to their defensive line, making it difficult for Celtic to get through, over or wide.  Their best chance in the first half actually came from a Hearts corner kick, one of the few occasions the visitors ventured forward.

Sure, we need to beat Rangers, but dealing with the challenge of teams sitting tight and packing midfield will be key to winning the SPL, and that starts at Perth on Sunday.  St Johnstone will not be in confident mood after their 0-3 pasting at home yesterday, so you can expect them to sit three central midfielders in front of the defence.

  1. If you go down to the court today

You’re sure of a big surprise.

If you go down to the court today

    You’d better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was

Will gather there for certain, because

Today’s the day the teddy bears see their dipstick

    Lactic time for teddy bears,

The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today.

    Watch them, catch them unawares,

And see them bootlick on their holiday.

    See them gaily dance about.

They love to play and shout.

    And never have any cares.

At six o’clock their mommies and daddies

Will take them home to bed

Because they’re tired little teddy bears.

If you go down to the court today,

    You’d better not go alone.

It’s lovely down to the court today,

But safer to stay at home.

For every bear that ever there was

Will gather there for certain, because

Today’s the day the teddy bears hear their dipstick

    CHORUS

Every teddy bear, that’s been good

Is sure of a treat today

There’s lots of wonderful things to excrete

    And wonderful games to play

Beneath the trees, where nobody sees

They’ll hide and seek as long as they please

Today’s the day the teddy bears realise it´s tragic

  2. Seriously, after the shenanigans during the match on Saturday, there are some who want to slag off our captain following a pretty meaningless issue. I’m glad we have a captain willing to take the fight to the opposition and if standing up to and shouting at Ian Black is worthy of annoyance from some, then I despair.

Standing up for Scott Brown \o/

“Stupid does as Stupid does and to think he is the Captain of Celtic Football Club!”

What in your opinion is the difference between Hamill’s argument with Scott Brown and the Sleekit Apprentice Boy’s argument with Neil Lennon?

  4. The Battered Bunnet on

Now that his work at the Large Hadron Collider looks to be coming to a successful conclusion, with data indicating that the Higgs Bosun exists at the 125GeV range, can Rangers look forward to the return of John Fleck to footballing duties?

  5. Seven Fishes Four Steaks on

Ernie, Scott brown on Saturday done the exact same as Scott brown did against the sewer rat.

When final whistle went Brown threw his arms in the air in front of the south stand to celebrate. He then walked towards hamill and shook his hand and said something. Hamill reacted and brown again raised arms in front of south stand to celebrate and Samaras took him away as hamill looked like he was coming for brown.

A nothing incident apart from those Scott brown haters who want to have a go at Brown for anything at all.

  6. I like to see a bit of afters to be honest. For me it shows a bit of fight in the side and a bit of gallusness. You need those things and it is something that has been lacking.

After the final 10minutes of that game and the ref’s antics, the Hearts players antics, it is no wonder the bhoys were delighted with the 3 points. It will be one of the hardest 3 points of the season.

I find it mind boggling folk are finding negatives there and are actually criticising the Captain for that.

  7. I don’t think Celtic would have won the game the other day if Scott Brown had not came on a half-time.

He brought a bit of drive and urgency to the midfield, not that I think centre-mid is his position, and it was no surprise that this spread throughout the team, most notably to James Forrest, who came on to a game in the 2nd half after an indifferent 1st half.

Remember being dragged to see some peoples idea of a cult hero / cult blues guitarist -Jackie Lynton at a boozer / music venue on the Harrow Road.

Highlight for many who were there was , what felt to me , a seemingly interminable version of — The Teddy Bears Picnic —- the only thing missing was an 18 minute drum solo..

  9. Well as usual there will be differing opinions of the Celtic captain’s style, – thats because shy demure Paul McStay, he ain’t.

Scott Brown’s introduction at half time, was more than a wee bit deliberate and the first thing he did was a neat Brown on Black,

not a bad foul, but a reminder that Celtic can kick back, especially when Ian Black was allowed to foul, continually in the first 45

    minutes by Calum Murray.

    Neil Lennon’s not daft.

  10. RogueLeader – Gallusness. The mot juste.

I know Scott Brown is a Fifer, but he is more gallus than most Glasgwegians I know. \o/

If his middle name isn’t “Roon Ye!”, it should be. (thumbsup)

  11. Top of the morning to you all from a bright but cold Fife.

Am doing some research on Hugh O’Neill and old Celtic player I knew and came across this from a newspaper clipping of an Old Firm game he had played in.

From page 28 of the Sunday Mail, April 7, 1940

By Rex, who is reporting on this Old-Firm derby of the previous day when Celtic were robbed, suffering a 1-2 defeat at Parkhead after biased refereeing.

Rex wrote, “Two minutes after the interval, Rangers were awarded a penalty kick. As an exposition of Venters’ histrionic art it was superb. As a punishment to fit the crime, it was a wash-out. The Ranger appeared to me to have started his “dive” before he was tackled.”

Things are getting worse instead of better, because at least in those far off days some reporters were brave enough to tell it like it was. Today’s toadies with typewriters don’t have the guts to do that.

  12. philvis – if you need gallus, Broonie has it by the bucket load. Unfortunately sometimes what we want is for a 10 yard pass to find a team mate. Days like yesterday required gallus though…..

  13. Big Nan

The day may not be too far off when we see the refs give a penalty before the dive.

Kyrgiakos’s penalty for the huns against Hearts came close.

On another issue I wonder how different some opinions would be if Scott Brown had been Born and raised in Derry.

  14. kitalba – “On another issue I wonder how different some opinions would be if Scott Brown had been Born and raised in Derry”

I always enjoy resting your post l particularly enjoyed that one it brought back memories.

  16. I don’t care what anybody says, the Lee Wallace “penalty” wasn’t a penalty either, in my book.

Two players locking arms shouldn’t make your legs give way, unless you’re in a struggling Rangers

    side, at 0-0.

The ridiculously over reported mock outrage from McCoist since the Aluko dive, directly contributed to the certainty

that they’d get a penalty, in the very first penalty box contact that occurred.

    And, they did.

  17. RogueLeader:

If I remember rightly every single pass Scott Brown made yesterday found his man bar one. The same cannot be said for one or two other much aclaimed central mid-fielders who took to the field against Hearts.

  19. Udinese ? —-

Top of Serie A and will remain there if Juve lose to Roma tonight [ unlikely ]

Good /hard fought 2-1 win against Chievo yesterday.

Di Natale played . Di Natale scored. 10th Serie A goal in 14 appearances this season.. I very much doubt that he will play against Celtic . He has now scored 67 goals in his last 84 Serie A appearances. A goal every 106 minutes .

Asked about the soon come game against Celtic —- Udinese’s manager ——Guidolin -said he would decide on his line up early on the afternoon of the game.. He repeated that the Europa League was not a priority and stressed that next Sunday’s away game at Lazio was much more important——

Tiny crowd for a Derby game —– stadium was less than 33 % full. Wouldn’t expect there to be many more at the Celtic game .

Lovely day -20 degrees -sunny -most of you lot would think it was warm -way down south.

Totally agree, it was as soft as they get. Why is Brines getting SPL games again?

  21. RogueLeader:

No worries mate but some make an insiduous vocation out of finding fault in Scott Brown. I find it hard to understand their motivations. I spoke with him (Brown) after the game in Sydney and he came across as a very committed Celtic man. He said back then that he would not be leaving Celtic.

I doubt if any of the LL (apologies for the abbreviations, I cannot bring myself to write the phrase) are aware of it but I see we are actually up against the team sitting at the top of Serie A! The top! Do not know if we can do it, but if we do it will be one of our greatest results.
