Bribery and Scottish football

840

The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, yesterday made an extraordinary bid to bribe his way up the Scottish Football League (SFL), saying, “I would … be prepared to guarantee other clubs the ticket revenue equivalent of 300 Rangers fans turning up for matches.”

The SFL will soon vote on reconstruction and amalgamation with the SPL with a 12-12-18 structure on the table.  If this is rejected, no reconstruction will happen.  Should they win successive promotions Green’s club are due to spend three years in lower league football but if successful his bribe could shorten this to two seasons.

In support of his claim Green cites Stranraer, who won Division Two in 1993 and were promoted to Division One the following season.  The league structure changed that summer, from three to four leagues, resulting in more teams being relegated from Division One than was scheduled at the start of the season, but clubs were only promoted to the league they would have entered without reconstruction.

The Rangers are due to be promoted to the Second Division next season but are asking for direct access to the First Division.  They have made no suggestion as to what should happen to the club who finish in second place in this season’s Third Division.  Although Green’s statement references the Stranraer scenario, and an insistence that “the principle of promotion and relegation… should be enshrined”, he does not explain that Stranraer won the league and were promoted from Division Two to One, or that he wants promotion from Third to First.

It will surprise no one that Green believes “the SFL has shown real leadership in proposing” colts teams from the The Rangers and Celtic, although he has surprised me with the news that his club did not lobby for this suggestion.

I am sure the SFL lawyers would have reverted to the Fifa rule book, which is pretty clear that clubs can only be promoted on sporting merit, and explicitly prohibits clubs from paying for promotion.  Which is a pity, as I am sure the financial security of Green’s embryonic club would be greatly enhanced by promotion straight to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

We have been here before.

Scottish Football League clubs will decide their only structure but now more than ever we have to stand together as a club.  The direction and leadership of Celtic, and the supporters’ organisations, tested by often irreconcilable challenges at every turn, are exceptional.  Fantasies that the World Order is controlled between Celtic Park, Glasgow City Council and the Vatican are just that. Running Celtic is like steering the Titanic away from the iceberg with a pizza box, although if you speak to any numpty who has never done it you’ll get a different view. Despite all this, for the first time in decades we have a successful and sustainable football model.

We recruit and develop exceptional players who achieved what few of us expected this season.  The challenge for Celtic is to win the league and Cup and apply all energies on recruiting players for next season’s Champions League campaign.

Enjoy your football; Stand up for Celtic.

  1. The nonsense about “promoting” The Rangers in a new three league structure continues, not surprisingly. This morning it’s the former quiz show captain talking about why the new club should be placed in the second tier – just to help out all the poor teams there. Not for their own benefit, of course, just to help others. Honestly. Sincerely folks.

Maybe Sally was listening to the papal inauguration – and wants to do his bit to help the poor?

    Good morning CQNers,

The police action against the Green Brigade was a result of a political manoeuvre, political manoeuvring that brought about a bill that was manufactured to produce figures that painted a picture of Scottish society that was balanced in it’s bigotry.

I’ve read too many posts pointing angry fingers at the Celtic board but for the life of me I can’t understand the almost total lack of any posters directing anger and frustration at their politicans.

Where are the politicians in Scotland taking up the anti-Irish, anti-catholic issues in Scottish society?

  3. Interesting revelation from Sandaza in that bogus interview

His pay starting at 4.5k per week goes up a grand a week for every year he stays at the club and then hits 10 grand a week in his 4th year

I expect most of the sevco players are on similar deals, quite a lot in a players costs then as the years go by

Which explains Chuckles anxiety to get his newco into the the SPL big time cash asap

  4. Morning all. Lovely day here.

Everyone on here knows that I have little time for the political stance of some of our support. Having, however, watched the legalistic weasel words used by the man who masquerades as our Justice Minister to evade dealing with a situation his Government created, may I suggest that the Celtic support apply to the City authorities to march from the town to Celtic Park en masse, as a gesture of support for the Green Brigade. I would urge anyone who can participate to do so.

I felt sorry for him… imagine that !!

Interesting deal hes on though…. if that’s the kinda money and year on year rises …. no wonder chuckles is desperate for league jumping

Totally agree … said at the weekend someone should apply for a licence and I would defo join that march to celtic park.

  7. “Rangers supremo Green, who is demanding his Third Division champions-elect are given promotion to the second tier should a 12-12-18 set-up be introduced next season.”

Note the subtle wordplay from Express, from third to second sounds very plausible and fair.

Fourth tier to second tier or third division to first division sounds too harsh and demanding of favours.

  9. Thindimebhoy- also explains why Jon Daly is so interested to talk, his agent saying he would be in the same ballpark figures as Sandaza and Black.

  10. Haven’t heard the Sandaza thing, but did he say he was prepared to do a deal without Sevco being made aware?

If a Celtic player had said that I’m not sure how much sympathy I would have.

  11. goldstar10

Yes and ideally Chuckles will want his big money players in the SPL a year at least before they hit the 4th year of their contracts.

  12. The Boy Jinky on

    Ernie

He said to ” the agent” to send the contract to him first so he can look at it before speaking to the club. Said he didn’t want this getting out as it would mean trouble for him

Ironically … he praised the zombie fans … the ones who boo him week in week out….

On zombie media they are demanding he is sacked today

  13. On top of all the other injustices that we see happening around us now we have Strathclyde polis investigating how Daly and RTC got their inside info. Is this now appears to be a witch-hunt against those who exposed the ranglers wrong-doings .

Huns are desperate to out RTC.

I would have thought a police investigation into SDM’s dark and dubious history would have been more appropriate. We seem to be living in an increasingly sinister world in which the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

  18. If the Zombies are in the new National Division (3rd Tier) next season then there will be no ‘big’ signings at Poundland on 1st September. No Daly, no Law, no Bell, no other SPL journeyman on a ridiculously overinflated wage for third tier football. There will be a cull, the big earners (Wallace, Black, Shiels, Sandaza) will be punted and they will go with a youth team. Given their manager isn’t up to the job, he, along with the other two stoogies who stand beside him, will be given the sack and a manager with experience in lower leagues and youth teams will be appointed. Or Jimmy Calderwood!!

If I was the Chairman of any Scottish Football Club, I would be thoroughly P’d off with the CEO of this new SFL 3 club, and with his compliant LL …….they’re still trying to ride roughshod over all of Scottish Football …… little wonder there is friction between him and ‘the quiet man’ (his chairman) ……… They’re heading for a fall, no doubt about it….

    Pop Quiz hot shots.

You are a chairman of a team who will be in the new third division of 18 next season.

You may be one of 9 teams who have benefited from larger home gates thanks to a Zombie following out of defiance turning up at your stadium boosting your coffers

    OR

You may be one of the other teams from the current Division 2 who are due to benefit if they are in the same league as you next season OR one of them to be screwed if Crazy Chuck’s plan to skip a league is to be adopted.

What do you do? What do you do?

Vote for a system where your gate will be boosted and your income with it or vote for when where a club chairman is trying to claim he’ll compensate you to the tune of 300 people while losing a million quid a month in the process.

If their fans scream boycott so what? You’re not losing any money from them right now so nothing changes and if they scream boycott backed by crazy Chuck, why would you vote for their fast tracking?

Scottish football seems to be all about self interest and money you can get from it.

Fast Tracking through a vote is a non starter.

I can see them going mental and running to their buddies in the courts again who will naturally rule in their favour as they do with everything else and then FIFA can step in.

    Bring it on.

The day after the night before(described above) was on open-goal which our club’s hierarchy woefully missed.

You see…the next day after the ‘shame-game’….Celtic FC were summoned to a Govt

hearing about the toxic fall-out from ‘that’ game.

Well…imo…Celtic should have called their own ‘media-conference’ and at the same time

dragged Scotland’s ‘little-secret’ onto the world stage by, making it clear that, under NO

circumstances will Celtic FC be appearing at a Govt-summit on the basis of having 3 players booked !!!

Celtic should have highlighted the fact that – our manager had raged against the anti-Celtic

refereeing-circuit, backed up brilliantly by QC Paul McBride RIP who also investigated and found that the SFA was – sectarian / prehistoric / anti-Celtic, and on the basis of this

we as a club would welcome a forensic inspection of ALL aspect’s of Scottish football for which the club would pay any expenses.

If, Celtic would have trifled with a certain level of ‘anarchy’ by refusing to attend the Salmond-Summit, then I think our club would have won the – long game.

Instead…our hierarchy kow-toed to Salmond’s demands and the only person who ended up being blamed for the entire ‘shame-game’ – Neil Lennon.

How many kicks in the teeth will Celtic supporters take before they say – “Feck this !!!”

I have been saying on here for many years now that Celtic FC is a rudderless ship.imo

And, when ye think about it…after bigging-up Neil Lennon…mainly from a sympathetic

point of view re: The ‘Shame-Game – I think that…given the clubs standing after the BTM era bombed…Neil Lennon was the ONLY manager that Celtic were likely to get. Neil has had to learn on the job, and that’s not easy when only 2 clubs had any realistic chance of winning the SPL title.

Now, I read on here a lot of stuff regarding the ‘model’ that the club adheres to…bringing in players to develop them and then move them on for lots more than they were brought in. That’s all well and good if it actually happens ?

Since Neil came in I believe I would be correct to say that, the main players who’ve been sold are: Aiden and Ki – none of whom have been brought in by the current manager or scouts.

Many fholk are fretting just now about the likelihood of the loss of – Hooper / Vic67 / FF.

But, the way I see it is that the team is rank-rotten…even wi those players in it ?!?!?

I will predict that – SB sales will hit rock bottom and, as a result…the bored will splash out on some decent players for a change from all of these – waifs n strays.

    But…as Batman said to Sergeant Jim Gordon – “There’s a storm coming…£

I just read a report by FAC of planned events over the next 5 weeks culminating on the presentation of a petition to Parliament.

Sorry cannot link at mo but Im sure someone will. It contains other stuff to chew on.

One point though is that the GB are but one party to FAC that cover all recognised supporter groups and I think the campaign would be better served if it was not viewed as support for the GB alone but the support as a whole.

Perhaps had Saturday’s event been organised in that wider base input from other groups might have prevented giving the police an out by not getting permission for the march to Celtic Park.

The police are the blunt instruments of a government law that Celtic, our support and indeed all clubs opposed. We stand a much better chance of removing it if the argument for doing so comes from as wide a base as possible.

I do appreciate the GB have been on the receiving end of the blunt instrument and why they thought it necessary to go it alone.

However they were never on their own going to end their treatment and it is good that one consequence of Saturday’s police action has been to widen the action base.
