Bribery and Scottish football

840

The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, yesterday made an extraordinary bid to bribe his way up the Scottish Football League (SFL), saying, “I would … be prepared to guarantee other clubs the ticket revenue equivalent of 300 Rangers fans turning up for matches.”

The SFL will soon vote on reconstruction and amalgamation with the SPL with a 12-12-18 structure on the table.  If this is rejected, no reconstruction will happen.  Should they win successive promotions Green’s club are due to spend three years in lower league football but if successful his bribe could shorten this to two seasons.

In support of his claim Green cites Stranraer, who won Division Two in 1993 and were promoted to Division One the following season.  The league structure changed that summer, from three to four leagues, resulting in more teams being relegated from Division One than was scheduled at the start of the season, but clubs were only promoted to the league they would have entered without reconstruction.

The Rangers are due to be promoted to the Second Division next season but are asking for direct access to the First Division.  They have made no suggestion as to what should happen to the club who finish in second place in this season’s Third Division.  Although Green’s statement references the Stranraer scenario, and an insistence that “the principle of promotion and relegation… should be enshrined”, he does not explain that Stranraer won the league and were promoted from Division Two to One, or that he wants promotion from Third to First.

It will surprise no one that Green believes “the SFL has shown real leadership in proposing” colts teams from the The Rangers and Celtic, although he has surprised me with the news that his club did not lobby for this suggestion.

I am sure the SFL lawyers would have reverted to the Fifa rule book, which is pretty clear that clubs can only be promoted on sporting merit, and explicitly prohibits clubs from paying for promotion.  Which is a pity, as I am sure the financial security of Green’s embryonic club would be greatly enhanced by promotion straight to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

We have been here before.

Scottish Football League clubs will decide their only structure but now more than ever we have to stand together as a club.  The direction and leadership of Celtic, and the supporters’ organisations, tested by often irreconcilable challenges at every turn, are exceptional.  Fantasies that the World Order is controlled between Celtic Park, Glasgow City Council and the Vatican are just that. Running Celtic is like steering the Titanic away from the iceberg with a pizza box, although if you speak to any numpty who has never done it you’ll get a different view. Despite all this, for the first time in decades we have a successful and sustainable football model.

We recruit and develop exceptional players who achieved what few of us expected this season.  The challenge for Celtic is to win the league and Cup and apply all energies on recruiting players for next season’s Champions League campaign.

Enjoy your football; Stand up for Celtic.

I admire your passion but I think it clouds your judgement.

I would want you in a trench beside me because whilst you were charging over the top I’ d be sneaking round behind the enemy to boot the boot in.

If you look at how the establishment at all levels in football, justice -hah, government, the media have circled the wagons to protect their favourite club, do you imagine for one minute that combined force would not act to seriously damage Celtic had we gone over the top?

That is what the Bored have to consider whilst you enjoy the luxury of not having to worry about the consequences if your plan of action failed.

The responsibility of protecting Celtic in an increasingly hostile environment is a heavy one and should not be discounted in our passion.

What is done is done. Even when supporters disagree, can they not agree to disagree in a way that their disagreement does not damage the club?

  4. Good morning from an overcast Nordrhein Westfalen, more snow predicted ffs! I listened to the Sandaza interview last night and had to switch it off, I’m glad I’m not the only one who found it distasteful. It just shows you that listening to something and seeing excerpts of it in print are entirely two different things, evidence of how an interview can be slanted to suit your own point of view.

  6. Interesting the subtle “and not so “mind games that are being played out re reconstruction.

Before the sevco fiasco most of us, and our clubs were either ambivalent or, against drastic reconstruction.

Post sevco liquidation it is now crucial, for the sake of Scottish football that these changes are implemented ASAP. What has changed? I think we know the answer.

As time goes on it’s clear these changes are not to save Scottish football. They are to propel sevco as far up the leagues that the SFA, the MSM and cohorts can get away with.

Last night on ssb we heard Marc Guidi and bfdj DEMAND that sevco are installed in the SPL next season, by any means, or Armageddon will be the result. This is the reconstruction they want. For the benefit of one team.

That is why most folk are now sold on 12 12 18.

It’s still helps sevco more than it does Celtic.

What happened to the “no reconstruction thanks” option.

All the options open to us still benefit sevco.

    See what they did there?0

    No offense intended but..

…if, Celtic had did what I suggested…even entrenched malcontents like me

would have stood by the club.

What I’m trying to point out is that…by doing what they did…Celtic FC have now

become the establishments bitches. The goalposts will be forever moving – against

Now the establishment are playing their ace-card – all out war on the Celtic support

The cops will be ordered to try and provoke the Celtic fans into a Hampden Riot type of

A massive coup and one that would give world wide coverage of the Celtic story. DDL has won 3 Oscars and is probably the greatest actor of his generation.

On Saturdays SSB – HK said sumfin like – “The Rangers fans have been on telling us that they don’t want to go back into the SPL.”….”….meanwhile, the Celtic fans come on and say that Rangers haven’t been dealt with sufficiently and should not be allowed back into the SPL….so I say…THE GAME IS FINISHED !!!”

You know what…I think HK is dead right this time.

  15. I remember commenting on a Campbell Ogilvie interview last year that it worried me that he was so relaxed and unthreatened by his conflicted position. As it turned out, thus far, his confidence was not misplaced.

I am equally disturbed by the bullish performance of Les Gray last night. He may be a one note singer but he has confidence in that note of authoritarianism he sounds.

My reading of the Les Gray Narrative is:-

He knows that the Scottish Government has given strong backing to this legislation and is determined to see it perceived as “working well”

He knows that the Police Hierarchy has a similar aim and are confident they can deliver on it

He knows that the average policeman, whom he used to represent, are in favour of this legislation and approach. Believe me, if there was any strong undercurrent of disquiet from serving police officers, Les Gray would not be so bullish.

He knows that they have “evidence”, from the likes of Councillor Mason’s constituents, to justify their approach as being in the public’s interest.

And he knows that press coverage has been broadly favourable and will continue to be so, especially, when they secure a few convictions. Gordon Brewer(?) last night was deeply uninterested in asking any probing questions or in prolonging this distasteful segment of his programme.

This trend is not going to change anytime soon.

The basic premise of “The Offensive Behaviour At Football Matches” is unjust. It categorises an offence based on the characteristics and sporting interest of the “offender” rather than the offense. What next? Knife Crime at Bus stops but not at taxi ranks? Speeding in Glasgow but no limits in Edinburgh? Verbal Assault on Football Managers in Glasgow punished but Physical Assault in Edinburgh allowed?

Les Gray is confident that he has the backing of the decent non-football supporting, Express/Mail/Sunday Post reading Scots, the Political establishment, and the Police hierarchy and rank & file.

Only organised opposition by decent football supporters is going to convince him to lay low and shut up. He may not be a bright man but he knows which way a wind is blowing and Les likes a following wind. He creates much of that himself.

  16. Ive been waiting for some of the knockers of our “Young Supporters” to claim that the Janefield Road cavalry charge was the police JUST doing their job.

That was then, this is now.

On your prediction, if protests are done in the right way they will go off peacefully.

Ironically if they do not and the OB is producing worse civil disorder than it was aimed at presenting then Mr S can wave goodbye to his career.

He has a political decision to make.Scrap a divisive bill to help the chances of producing an independent Scotland or torpedo the main plank of his parties raison d’etre.

The fight is now entering the arena where it has to be fought and we will win.

Do you mean that Les Gray has your backing too? (I was taking that as given)

Or do you mean that it won’t be overturned until all decent football fans and you oppose it :-)

  21. Just seen Les Gray’s remarks on Newsnight Scotland. Very frightening. I have only one question: who determines what is offensive? Seems the individual policeman can decide for himself. Salmond has given the bigots in uniform carte blanche to mete out “justice”. Who could vote for such a party??

The nonsense about “promoting” The Rangers in a new three league structure continues, not surprisingly. This morning it’s the former quiz show captain talking about why the new club should be placed in the second tier – just to help out all the poor teams there. Not for their own benefit, of course, just to help others. Honestly. Sincerely folks.

Their argument makes NO SENSE AT ALL. If they wanted to help all the small teams benefit by getting their travelling support, why would they want to jump above an entire division of these small clubs?
