Cash windfall for Celtic fans

998

Readers of Celtic Quick News will know that our club has not been out of debt since Fergus gathered up our cash in 1994 and set about building the new stadium.  19 years later, with the mad arms race which consumed Scottish football over, we stand on the verge of coming out of debt.

The full consequences of this will not be known for years to come but the first material benefit is the £100 discount per season ticket Celtic announced today.  We’re no longer in debt, we can team-build in a measured and sustainable manner, and with Champions League money in the bank, Celtic have cut prices.

I know season ticket holders who missed out on the Barcelona, Spartak and Benfica games as, on top of everything else, they could not afford Champions League tickets.  If we get back to the group stage next season, supporters will be able to buy their season tickets and Champions League group tickets for less money than they paid for SPL tickets this season.

The return of the £50 under-13 ticket is also very welcome, along with a tiered level for older children.  With so many competing distractions, it is important that we bring as many young people into our community as possible.

Peter Lawwell’s comments underline the importance of bums on seats to everything that happens at Celtic, “The backing of our fans has, as ever, been crucial.  Domestically and in Europe they have once again been right with us and we felt it important that we rewarded their commitment by making this gesture”.

More welcome good news for the Champions.

I think the rumours date back to the Artmedia game in which CS was taken off injured- not gospel but Chris( a player I really liked) was gone within 6 months

I dont share your belief that we should replace NFL but I do think the team could be better coached in certain areas. Danny Mac has helped Adam M and M Lustig at full back and Stevie Woods seemed to help Fraser Forster so why not a specialist forward coach?

  6. This cash windfall for Celtic fans- is this taxable?

Actually some tax experts can maybe advise me- I received some windfall shares a few years ago on a demutualisation- should these have been declared for tax at the time or are they subject to CG tax when I sell them?

It’s been widely rumoured that this was them as they have a reputation for doing this sort of thing in the area when their business is threatened.

It”ll be interesting to see if they think they try this when they get CG’s shares.

Hooper will remain at the club next season as he prepares for a busy summer of transfer activity.

Striker Hooper has played a key role in Celtic’s success this term and manager Neil Lennon declared at the weekend that he was desperate to keep the former Scunthorpe man.

A number of bids from Norwich City were rejected in January and there is expected to be further Premier League interest when the transfer window reopens, but Lawwell hopes he will stay.

“Gary has a year and you never know,” Lawwell said in the Daily Record. “A lot has to do with the player and what he wants to do but there are three parties.

“There’s us, the player and then there is also what is there for the player. If there is a possibility the kid wants to stay and that is Neil’s gut feeling, who knows?

“We know where we are, I’m sure the player knows where he is, but what we don’t have is the third leg to all of that.”

Lawwell is also planning to hold talks regarding contract extensions with star trio Georgios Samaras, Joe Ledley and Anthony Stokes.

He said: “Sami has a year, Stokesy has a year, Joe has a year, we understand that.”

Celtic are already starting to think about strengthening their squad for next season and have drawn up a list of possible targets, although Lawwell accepts that it will be difficult to bring in many players before the UEFA Champions League qualifiers in July.

He explained: “The ideal situation is to have all business done before European qualifiers but recent years tells you the transfer market condenses into two weeks at the end of August unless there are Bosmans you can get early.

“Neil knows what he wants, the positions he wants and we have options for each of those positions.

“But stability is vital and I don’t see wholesale changes being made by any manner of means.”

‘Why did D&P sell the assets to Sevco Scotland Ltd when another company had an exclusivity clause?’

I’d hazard a guess that D&P will have received a letter from Green’s solicitors saying that their client Sevco 5088 had either directed that the purchase was to proceed in the name of sevco scotland ltd or that sevco 5088 had assigned their interest under the contract to sevco scotland ltd and D&P would have made no further enquiry beyond that.

Does seem a bit odd that Green’s vehicle also had the name “Sevco” in it. He could have called it anything. Was the “Sevco” prefix used to make it look like it was one and the same?

“For me the whole attacking set up is not right, if there is a set up at all….”

Celtic have scored more goals than any other team in Scotland this season.

There has never been a rule that only strikers should weigh in with the goals – in the modern game it is not unusual for players from other positions to lead the scoring charts at their club.

Frank Lampard has become Chelsea’s second all-time leading scorer – a midfielder scoring 200 goals.

It’s worth remembering that Gary Hooper can still finish top league scorer again this season – he is already the leading scorer in all competitions.

Also, Anto Stokes (who is possibly our best striker at domestic level) was out injured for most of the season.

At least one part of The Rangers’ statement today is very clear:

“Sevco 5088 was not the acquisition vehicle which purchased the assets of Rangers Football Club.”

    But:

‘Rangers’ website in June stated, that ‘for the avoidance of doubt’ the assets were bought by 5088 and thereafter transfered to Sevco Scotland.

The team with by far the most talented squad in Scotland have scored the most goals in Scotland?

Yes, as expected, would like to see the breakdown how where the assists came from, probably a very high % from corners or free kicks, last I checked most of the assists were from Adams and Mulgrew and we had scored 53 goals with 3 from assists from central midfield. Seems the attacking set up is get it wide and hit it in or hope to ‘create’ something from a corner or freekick.

I just dont think a lot of thought goes into attacking or creativity, seems a bit ‘put out the players, they are talented enough to do something.’

Just been diagnosed with pleurisy, so a bit of time off work. I always thought it was only old ppl that got pleurisy, take it 50 is old :(

Well never mind as the Celtic have reduced season tickets, I will now be taking my 2 gransons along to the games with me. One’s 6 the other 3 and I think the younger one is a bit young but he’ll catch the bug early.

  20. A very interesting point was made by a poster earlier regarding the stadium. It’s almost 20 years since the new Celtic Park was built and we have probably just paid it off in a manner of ways.

The ground was built in phases and these phases didn’t finish when the stands were complete. There was still the internal work to be carried out to complete the lounges and other areas. It is probably still not all complete to the standard and spec that the club want but it is paid for and the club can now look at other avenues regarding the stadium and what they would like to do to improve and upgrade it.

Standing areas have been spoken about for the last few years and the club have investigated this and lodged (I believe) a note with Glasgow City Council to see if this is possible. The museum/cafe/bar/club at the old school site is still in it’s infancy and I’m not sure what Celtic will ultimately do with this site. To have a top class sporting arena which is capable of hosting European finals you need to have entry to the ground for coaches without the need for players to walk outside. Anyone who has been on the Hampden tour will know this. The coaches are driven under the main stand and the players and officials can depart the coach in the ground and into the changing areas. You also need an internal warm up area. Hampden also has this and it is nothing more than a piece of astro turf no bigger than the size of a primary school games hall. Hampden is Scotlands only top class arena capable of hosting a CL/Europa League final. This is something Celtic need to sort quickly. The eyes on the world have feasted on Celtic Park on CL evenings and the stadium is envied around Europe for both it’s viewing areas and the atmosphere it creates. UEFA would be keen to use Celtic Park if it came up to the standards required to host a major tournament final. This is one of the key areas I see Celtic looking at in the next few years. The dressing rooms and tunnel area I believ are a tad on the small side for hosting a major final too and this is something else the club will have to look at in time.

We have an excellent training facility and again this is being done in phases and I believe in years to come it will be one of the best in Europe if it isn’t already.

Could the reduced season tickets this season signal cheaper tickets in future seasons to enable Celtic to finally complete the jigsaw of the ground and build up the main stand? Who knows but the gesture certainly means a lot to the people that will benefit from it.

Celtic have shown a lot of patience to get their books in order and they haven’t thrown money at things when the temptation would be to do so. The Commonwealth Games this summer will see our ground viewed by more people than ever before when the opening ceremony takes place there. Celtic are still building. Celtic are still evolving into a modern sports club. Celtic have already achieved mmuch but patience is still required for the next decade and maybe longer. The board will not throw money at the manager to sign merceneries and neither should they. It never worked for us in the past.

Celtic are more than a football club to the people that support the club. It is a way of life for most of us. It’s the first thing we think about in the morning and probably the last thing that goes through our mind at night.

This club is being preserved and improved on a year to year basis so that future generations will have a club to be proud of.

I remember when Fergus McCann was first interviewed with Tommy Burns when he made him manager and his ethos was true to the club then as it has always been. he said that he wanted Celtic to be a contender. I don’t think his vision was to dominate Europe or even Scotland for that matter it was to be a contender and in our current state that is exactly what we are. We are competing at all levels. We are winning trophies and we are contesting finals. We don’t win everything but we never have.

There is a lot to play for in the next few years but the interesting work is away from the pitch it’s what Celtic are achieving in the background and the grounding in the future that will ensue that Celtic are contenders for many years to come.

I don’t think there have been many greater times to be a Celtic supporter than right now. Exciting time ahead for the Hoops.

    Apologies for the long post.

I just think you should factor in the absence of Anto – he links up well with Hooper, and had he been fit then our strikers would have scored far more goals.

Celtic do score a lot of goals from set-pieces. But we should always play to our strengths. That is what all good teams do. It worked against Barcelona and Bayern Munich used it very well last night too.

The fact that we have players from every position that can score goals (apart from that Fraser Forster, who obviously needs to get the finger out and start shooting more) is a major plus for me – because we are not relying on the strikers alone to do the business.

That became a major problem towards the end of WGS’s time in charge.

  24. Henrik as coach, still largely a novice and unproven. It would only take a couple of bad results and the perennial CQN moaners who want rid of NFL would be on his back and eventually demanding that he be replaced. I wonder how many Barca fans are rattling their gums today wanting Tito Vilanova replaced?

Ah the grass is always greener on the other side, isn’t it? Let’s enjoy what we’ve got it won’t last forever.
