Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

624

Celtic struggled for much of the afternoon against Aberdeen but a second half goal from Charlie Mulgrew secured the win.  The home team opened well and had a patience about their play which prevented Aberdeen from seeing much of the ball.

Aberdeen had the best chance in the opening stages of the game when Fraser Fyvie crossed from the left but Fraser Forster did very well to intercept an awkward cross under pressure.  Celtic soon regained control and profited after 17 minutes when Beram Kayal found Gary Hooper, who squared to Ki in space.  The Korean midfielder shot low and hard; Aberdeen keeper David Gonzalez could only slow its progress into the net.

Glenn Loovens, who put in a solid shift in Rennes on Thursday and opened well today, retired injured immediately after the goal, giving Daniel Majstorovic a return to the team.

Aberdeen, who lost by 9 goals in the corresponding fixture last season, slowly played their way back into the game as Celtic perceivably wilted.  The early fluency from Celtic was clearly absent as the second half got underway.  Anthony Stokes was combative up front but struggled to link with Gary Hooper, who is clearly playing below his best.

Ryan Jack drew Aberdeen level just before the hour mark when he jinked past Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, and shot into Forster’s bottom right corner.

Celtic then realised they were in a game and applied themselves with greater effect, forcing Aberdeen to defend four consecutive corners within minutes of drawing level, but without a cutting edge up front, they failed to work Gonzalez.

With 20 minutes remaining Neil Lennon recalled Paddy McCourt from a lengthy period out of the team but before Paddy could work his magic Celtic were ahead.  Majstorovic knocked a free kick onto Charlie Mulgrew who took a touch before firing high into the net.

McCourt was an effective relief on an uninspiring game and clipped the ball narrowly wide after one of his trademark runs, proving beyond any doubt that he possesses unique abilities.

With 10 minutes remaining referee, Stevie O’Reilly, who has having a poor game, ordered off Ryan Jack for a second bookable offence.  The Aberdeen goal-scorer will miss next weekend’s game against Rangers.

Aberdeen’s 10 men caused Celtic a few anxious moments in the final minute of the game but could not find a way past Forster.

I’ve seen some trailers for it.

Some folk will just remember the daft Tintin cartoons with American accents.

If you read the books as a boy you will love the whole Tintin vibe.

    The trailer looks fantastic!

Even on my telly the depth of shade and vibrancy of the drawings are amazing.

On top of that it’s in 3D.

If there new series of Tintin films my blog name will be blown!

  9. Earlier today someone posted about the racist elements of Tintin.

This refers to Tintin in the Congo, which was never published in English.

    I have the French version.

    It is racist.

But it is a fairly good reflection on mainstream attitudes of the time.

In the story black people look ridiculous, and are really daft.

That is exactly how most Europeans saw them at the time.

Later books are much more accurate, to the extent that they recognise that English polis wear hats, and Scottish polis wear caps.

Rascar Capac – The books sold over 200million,so you must be fair judge.Yer man Speilberg bought the rights to Tintin way back in the 80’s – fair play to him.The new film is getting rave reviews, even in Europe.Speilberg said that the Yanks know little about Tintin, but he reckons that the film will see a new popularity with the books, and they shall soon conquer America!

petec – We need the win on Wednesday,no matter what – we just need to keep winning, every game.

The more we win,the more confident the team becomes.

Jaysus mate im surprised at ye – i am a million per % behind our club and our manager – we must be united.

  15. We were hopeless yesterday, pushing the ball about with little purpose, at least we upped our game when we lost the goal. Our defensive set up is very poor, I suspect we will be vulnerable at every away game this season in the spl.

We will need a dignity collapse to win the league, we are kidding ourselves on with this lot , I’m afraid.

The last 2 games I have been very proud of Celtic.

Yes, we should have ran Aberdeen ragged that they cannae take it any more.

That team got beat by 9 last season, there was no way they were going to lose by anything like that score yesterday.

Fantastic effort by the Celtic team when they sneaked the equaliser. That Took BALLS to Dominate the team and make sure they submitted to the superior Celtic players.

First time to comment after being in Rennes, great time.

    IMPORTANT

Spoke for a while with the Marseille Supporters club.

Thay have 4 teams, all playing in hoops, in the local league in southern France.

Jean-Luc Bardy, who runs the club and some-one I have known for many years, has turned many, many « nuetral » people into avid Celtic Fans.

In merchandising alone (kits etc for the teams) he spends at least £6000 a year. On top of that he organises trips to CP.

Celtic as a club need to help this grass-roots international development.

    They don’t.

And soon, Celtic will be like like a team like Ranjurs, with no real organised support abroad.

Also, for info, at his expense, Jean-Luc provides a team each year in Paris for the the Supporters Championship – Vs other supporters clubs like Barca, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Man Utd, Porto etc

Celtic have won this tournament 4 times in a row ! ! !

And when they try to communicate with CFC, they get very little help.

Paul – or anyonyone else with clout – please help sort this out.

Celtic needs to be doing its max. to ensure this kind of effort is recognised

First time on CQN since the game and have been scanning back.

I can’t really understand the level of negativity that abounds.

We won the game and got the 3 precious points. The fact that we had to fight for a narrow 2-1 victory seems to have caused a lot of discontent. It appears that if we don’t win comfortably, then it is seen as a sign of failure.

I thought we played some decent passing football in the first-half and created a few good chances. When Aberdeen equalised, I was as disappointed as anyone of a Celtic mind, but was heartened by the fact that, unlike in recent games where we might have hidden, we attacked relentlessly and created more chances as we chased the winner, which duly arrived courtesy of Charlie Bhoy. Paddy was very unlucky as he came within inches of making it comfortable after tremendous individual play in the box.

I was happy and relieved to hear the final whistle, but it seems that I am in a minority in being reasonably pleased with the overall performance.

As I have said, weeks ago this team might have folded at 1-1, but this time we saw wave after wave of attacks on the Aberdeen goal and it was only a matter of time.

    Hail Hail.

  25. Good morning from MK where it’s predicted we’ll have a fine autumnal day.

We urgently need some inspiration to lift us from this mediocrity, we can’t wait for the tax man so c’mon Lenny mess with their heads, they must start believing in themselves.

Here’s one of the finest demonstrations of self-belief and what can be achieved, it should be replayed constantly to our players.
