Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

624

Celtic struggled for much of the afternoon against Aberdeen but a second half goal from Charlie Mulgrew secured the win.  The home team opened well and had a patience about their play which prevented Aberdeen from seeing much of the ball.

Aberdeen had the best chance in the opening stages of the game when Fraser Fyvie crossed from the left but Fraser Forster did very well to intercept an awkward cross under pressure.  Celtic soon regained control and profited after 17 minutes when Beram Kayal found Gary Hooper, who squared to Ki in space.  The Korean midfielder shot low and hard; Aberdeen keeper David Gonzalez could only slow its progress into the net.

Glenn Loovens, who put in a solid shift in Rennes on Thursday and opened well today, retired injured immediately after the goal, giving Daniel Majstorovic a return to the team.

Aberdeen, who lost by 9 goals in the corresponding fixture last season, slowly played their way back into the game as Celtic perceivably wilted.  The early fluency from Celtic was clearly absent as the second half got underway.  Anthony Stokes was combative up front but struggled to link with Gary Hooper, who is clearly playing below his best.

Ryan Jack drew Aberdeen level just before the hour mark when he jinked past Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, and shot into Forster’s bottom right corner.

Celtic then realised they were in a game and applied themselves with greater effect, forcing Aberdeen to defend four consecutive corners within minutes of drawing level, but without a cutting edge up front, they failed to work Gonzalez.

With 20 minutes remaining Neil Lennon recalled Paddy McCourt from a lengthy period out of the team but before Paddy could work his magic Celtic were ahead.  Majstorovic knocked a free kick onto Charlie Mulgrew who took a touch before firing high into the net.

McCourt was an effective relief on an uninspiring game and clipped the ball narrowly wide after one of his trademark runs, proving beyond any doubt that he possesses unique abilities.

With 10 minutes remaining referee, Stevie O’Reilly, who has having a poor game, ordered off Ryan Jack for a second bookable offence.  The Aberdeen goal-scorer will miss next weekend’s game against Rangers.

Aberdeen’s 10 men caused Celtic a few anxious moments in the final minute of the game but could not find a way past Forster.

I agree with you on the Charlie song. There was a spell I think it was near the end of the first half when GB was quiet (don’t know the reason – heard something but maybe wrong) and it was a throwback to the bad old days, pre GB, with barely a tune in CP. The last time the GB/JSU thing happened it was magical, and something very similar happened in Rennes between the lower section (where I was) and the upper section with the Paddy song and the Glasgow’s green and white, so I am all for it. Sometimes though, like today, it doesn’t work, that’s all. Hope it does next week.

How many other teams could lose Izzy, Big Kelvin, Mark Wilson, Scott Brown long term as well as short term Hoops, Kayal in the first part of season

  3. A turgid display but it was good to see us up our game after they scored, it is a small sign I tell ya but a real sign of better days ahead. Returning to the SPL from European games is proving to be a bit of a problem so it was good to see the team dig deep to get the 3 points.

Cannae wait to get Izzy and Broonie back.

I was wondering why they were singing that, I first of all thought Aberdeen fans had thrown their voices and a lot louder as well. Great stuff by the GB as always.

Honest question, how happy are you with Big Fraser other than Thurs night pass backs?

Certainly a good stopper for me but not quite international class, but will have to wait and see. (I cant even predict results ffs) apologies : )

Yes, plus i would suggest that players are rushed back and suffering, none more so than Hooper, he has not been fit all season. I have no doubt that our club has a lot to answer for on a board level, but no matter no team can lose big players and not suffer these days. Them without naesmit and jellylegs and gregor would srtuggle badly, luck has a element good or bad, just so happens we get more bad than good at the moment.

    i still believe

One sore point is the moving of Joe Ledley back to left back. When we finally find a left back in Izzy there’s no cover for his injury and l feel his replacement in El Kaddouri (sic) will be off again in Jan when his loan runs out, too short sighted to my mind.

  7. GyEmerald,

I like the big man. Nothing rebounds off him, he can kick with both feet, good shot stopper.

Needs to take command more(to say the least) but for me he will be a top class keeper, given support.

Can’t you feel somethings waiting to explode, last season we started so well only to fall away (mason in black assisted). Yet life goes in circles I can feel the wheel starting to turn in our direction soon

  11. GyEmerald,

    Hi m8

There is no point trying to kid on we are doing well. At the moment we are really struggling but what I am starting to see is flickers of fight within this Young Squad. Last season was always going to take care of itself and I suppose the players could do nothing else but fight as hard as they could for their manager, it seems this young team is struggling to get back up to that level again.

I think the players brought on board have Added to the team but the existing players have dipped in form, the last few weeks will have Added Character to their young beings.

At the moment it is about Building these young men back up out of their form slump, let them know we are 100% behind them, and when they experience winning this League with Celtic they will make sure they Win it every time after that.

Izzy and Broonie back will transform this team IMO but if we can get rolling before they do, and I think we can, if we just take it a game at a time, then the platform will be tremendous for a Brilliant 2nd half to this season.

Last weekend and the way it turned around, I could not help but think of Alex Ferguson down at MU. There are fine margins between being a Legend and an also ran, especially in management these days.

Never doubted Neil Lennon and anyone who does, really only cares about winning above Everything. IMO Neil will go on to be a Celtic Great as a manager.

Put far better than i ever could.

Hopefully will see some leaders come to the fore, hopefully focuses some people as to how important a player Skoosh is. The greatest teams are not always full of the greatest individuals.

With that comment Scotts away in January now : (

Game 4 tonight is Arlington is just getting under way.

Cardinals hammered the Rangers last night 16-7 to take a 2-1 series lead.

In the process Alber Pojols had a stellar night. I quote:

Pujols, widely acknowledged as baseball’s best hitter, slugged three home runs in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 16-7 pummeling of the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series. It might have been the best offensive performance in the history of the Fall Classic.

The three homers tied a series record achieved twice by Babe Ruth and once by Reggie Jackson. His five hits equaled the mark held by Paul Molitor of the Milwaukee Brewers. His six runs batted in tied the record set by the Yankees’ Bobby Richardson in 1960 and tied by Yankee Hideki Matsui(notes) in 2009.

Not bad company. Oh, yes, and Pujols set a series record with 14 total bases. And became the first player to get hits in four consecutive innings.

I think it was obvious last season that Beram and Neil had a really close working relationship and it was a surprise he was not ‘dealt in’ by the season kicking off. It is highly frustrating to me that Beram gets the deal he was wanting when Neil was under the most severe of pressure at Kilmarnock.

Broonie, is probably the highest paid player there and I don’t know what his salary is but, he is entitled to get the same level of pay at least as he enters into his most productive period as a player.

I don’t go for the Buy Buy Buy means the manager is being backed.

I am Very Disappointed that both Beram and Scott were not tied up at the Start of the Summer. As long as both players were not being unreasonable, then to not have them settled really says that Neil, although backed 100% from the fans was not being backed to the same degree from the powers that be at Celtic.

Robbie Keane being brought in to try rescue things was the first thought as the news filtered through Beram had signed.

    Rant over.

Go hunt them down now Celtic players and management.

I feel Broony is a necessity in the league in which we’re trapped. I do think he’s a necessity in our midfield and whilst not the greatest footballer he offers so much balance whilst the creativity of the best player in the league (KI)doesn’t work simply because of the nature of the league,

By the by had the pleasure of prior to a stadium tour in March in catching many of the first team going to Barrowfield for training, yet amongst all the egos i found Scott Brown to be a great credit to the club with his attention to the supporters needs, even having the good patience to wait for technophobe fathers to work their wives blackberries whilst posin for a picture with kids. Went up so much in my estimation and on the field his work is too far overlooked, but hey don’t create a positive Timland eh! : )
