Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

624

Celtic struggled for much of the afternoon against Aberdeen but a second half goal from Charlie Mulgrew secured the win.  The home team opened well and had a patience about their play which prevented Aberdeen from seeing much of the ball.

Aberdeen had the best chance in the opening stages of the game when Fraser Fyvie crossed from the left but Fraser Forster did very well to intercept an awkward cross under pressure.  Celtic soon regained control and profited after 17 minutes when Beram Kayal found Gary Hooper, who squared to Ki in space.  The Korean midfielder shot low and hard; Aberdeen keeper David Gonzalez could only slow its progress into the net.

Glenn Loovens, who put in a solid shift in Rennes on Thursday and opened well today, retired injured immediately after the goal, giving Daniel Majstorovic a return to the team.

Aberdeen, who lost by 9 goals in the corresponding fixture last season, slowly played their way back into the game as Celtic perceivably wilted.  The early fluency from Celtic was clearly absent as the second half got underway.  Anthony Stokes was combative up front but struggled to link with Gary Hooper, who is clearly playing below his best.

Ryan Jack drew Aberdeen level just before the hour mark when he jinked past Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, and shot into Forster’s bottom right corner.

Celtic then realised they were in a game and applied themselves with greater effect, forcing Aberdeen to defend four consecutive corners within minutes of drawing level, but without a cutting edge up front, they failed to work Gonzalez.

With 20 minutes remaining Neil Lennon recalled Paddy McCourt from a lengthy period out of the team but before Paddy could work his magic Celtic were ahead.  Majstorovic knocked a free kick onto Charlie Mulgrew who took a touch before firing high into the net.

McCourt was an effective relief on an uninspiring game and clipped the ball narrowly wide after one of his trademark runs, proving beyond any doubt that he possesses unique abilities.

With 10 minutes remaining referee, Stevie O’Reilly, who has having a poor game, ordered off Ryan Jack for a second bookable offence.  The Aberdeen goal-scorer will miss next weekend’s game against Rangers.

Aberdeen’s 10 men caused Celtic a few anxious moments in the final minute of the game but could not find a way past Forster.

  1. that is some amount of disinformation from the one guy under various names on RTC blog.

I wonder if he is employed to spread the rumours or if he is there just making up pro-rangers garbage to discredit the blog which has

been right every step of the way despite potential hunk of the year’s claims it was 99% p!sh.

The silly season will be upon us in the next month and the 10 point docking will hopefully breathe new life into this season for Celtic.

Regardless winning breeds confidence and we must win our next 2 matches against the Hibees to build on today. A few weeks ago they’d have wilted, today they came back and showed character.

More will be required in the next week.

Can someone explain if you share a post, would that cause a problem for a poster who is not on twitter and may not be keen on their post being shared on twitter?

  9. 3 points but nothing to enthuse about.

After Ibrox I expected a reaction. I expected the team to redouble their efforts and put down a marker that they had an appetite to win the league. We got Tynecastle. Surely that would be the almighty kick up the backside to get a reaction. We got Rugby Park. Surely the embarrassment of that first half performance would be the ultimate shake. Nope.

Today was without passion, without vigour, without appetite. The effort in Rennes can only excuse so much.

I see nothing about our team at the moment that gives me enthusiasm for the months ahead.

On the field we are lazy and play without leadership. We have a squad which seems to be filled with players who collect injury with alarming regularity. Off the field we appear incapable of galvanizing the team to get the effort and passion that was displayed in the second half of last season.

We are drifting and Neil is fast running out time to fix it.

Was at the game today and brought the wee man aged 5 nearly 6 for his first ever game he loved it which was nice however the language at the game was f shocking and I was disappointed about that but thats football I suppose. Can someone do something about that. However back to the game if we keep playing like that we will never win the league not good enough Celtic

  12. On the Charlie booking debate,

Balotteli got booked for lifting his shirt over his head & showing a ‘why always me t-shirt’

Booked for that? Football world has gone mad!!

To be honest, I can understand the Balotteli one – the ref doesn’t have the time to read what’s on a t-shirt nor the knowledge to make a judgement as to whether it is punishable or not. Celebrating a goal in front of your fans however, is ludicrous.

I suppose the easy answer would be not to take your wee man to the game, but, you may well just take him out of school, cos the playground will be every bit as bad as a football ground :>)

  15. GL2 not sure about that he may have been involved in some part though? I think he was back over in Puerta Glasgow for a while and it may have been when the Melrose went rebel.

Dunky C from Blackpool will know, I’ll ask him.

  17. After a tough game on thursday evening celtic performed really well today against a much changed aberdeen…..wee broon has made them into a big strong hard tackling fouling outfit…similar to wattys huns from previous seasons..thought celtic would tire near the end but they fought hard and got the second……..passing at times was excellent…still few players off form yis know the names…the players stood up well against constant fouling…..what can you say about the ref… same old same old

Seems like fun is outlawed in the footballing game! If the player jumps over the advertising then i can understand.

I’m not to sure, but heard a story that Strachan was booked in the World Cup for ‘not’ jumping over the advertising boards,

may be an urban legend though.

Refs should concentrate on bookings for tackles rather than the petty nonsense at the moment.

  19. I loathe the EPL. Teams are now simply baubles for sovereign wealth funds and dodgy Yankee vulture capitalists.

Although it’s funny to see United get a skelping, they were hammered today by a team funded purely by the oil reserves cornered by a hereditary Arab monarchy.

This league will die quicker than people think…

Yeah, I know, the world has most definitely gone mad. PC madness.

However, if he was aggressively showing his t-shirt, then he deserves a three match ban :-)

  21. Away to Blackpool for the lights tomorrow (5 days). We bit of advise to NL before I go play Paddy from the start on Wednesday.FFS it can,t get any worse than it is at least it would give us a bit of flair(I think thats the right word)

  22. Just watched the Manchester derby MOTD2 highlights , great stuff ,

only realised Ferdinand was on when they analysed the goals , tee hee…

Hansen now sayin in hindsight he seen it comin , erse…

    Mon the Hoops !

  23. cant believe ferguson actually turned up for post match interview after that humping today againsy City.

I believe Lenny said we played well before the sheep scored !

What game was he watching . reminds me of the bullshit Chesney came out with when he lost the plot before he chucked it.

If lenny thought we played well today , as much as i love him , then he shoudnt be our manager, he has to go, soon as.

3 points were great today, but we were dreadful, from start to finish. we only perked up when paddy came on.

I am fully aware that yes dont take him however your playground analogy bears with mine in that you cant wrap your kids in cotton wool so just let them have the experience and deal with it HOWEVER it was excessive and sometimes not needed so should it be the case its OK to swear relentless or if you are sat beside a kid THINK, my thoughts are think, swear as little as possible, I am not saying not to do it just less, I Myself had to stop myself at least 3 times today. But I think its a good thing to bring up

I believe much is riding on the outcome of the Sion appeal.

If they win their appeal,it will be open season against uefa, and the big clubs already want out of their control, we could hang on to the coat tails, we would be most welcome, we tick all the boxes.

Even if Sion don’t win their appeal, the big clubs have their knifes out, tis only a matter of time.

  26. tommytwiststommyturns on

Tommybhoy – we don’t call 3 in a row managers “Chesney”….you really need to try harder!
