Celtic a rare place a manager can build a great team

303

Southampton are (or at least, have been) one of the best run football clubs in England. Their recovery from a third-tier outfit, to the side which finished sixth in the Premier League under Ronald Koeman, was impressive.

Yesterday they sacked the manager who took over from Koeman a year ago, Claude Puel, after a season which saw them finish 8th in the league, and reach the League Cup final. It looks like a bonkers move, but Southampton have a made bonkers-looking moves work before.

In 2013 they sacked Nigel Adkins, who achieved two promotions at the club, to replace him with little-known Mauricio Pochettino, who had been sacked by Espanyol a year earlier. What’s worse, Pochettino couldn’t speak to language. I’ve no idea what happened to him.

When bold moves come off, they embolden you. Risk-aversion reduces until you become an irascible gambler and are caught with insufficient chips. Southampton look like they are closing the book on an era.

The man who replaced Adkins with Pochettino, Nicola Cortese, left the club in 2014, his replacement also left last month. They are looking for both a manager and a chief executive. Your guess is as good as mine who will appoint the former.

All of this takes place which the club is preparing for a sale to Chinese investors, doubtlessly with the potential buyers approval. If it was Cortese placing these chips, I would hold my criticisms, but this looks like nothing more than a ludicrous punt.

Southampton fans didn’t cover themselves in glory on this one either, chanting “You don’t know what you’re doing” at Puel as his side ran out of steam at the end of the season. Football is so dysfunctional.

This episode tells us lots about the managers’ market in England, but the most relevant point is that it is an increasingly unpredictable environment, which Brendan Rodgers knew when he pitched his tent in Glasgow a year ago.

If you want to build a great football team, the Celtic job is a rare place you may succeed.

E-Tims mentions that Joe Ledley is available on a free then goes on to mention the old adage of not coming back to a club you left.

Has Celtic ever had a player who came back and did as well or better after leaving (Bertie Auld being the obvious one)

*Willie Fernie who only left tae pay for the floodlights (you know the ones that guided the Luftwaffe tae Clydebank), on return helped us get tae the SC Final losing after a replay to the man who would bring him back as reserve coach 6 year later. He played against us 4 months after leaving scoring the 1st goal for the Buddies in a 3-1 SC semi victory.

losing 2–1 after extra time to Feyenoord Rotterdam of the Netherlands at the San Siro stadium, Milan. He was an extremely fast winger and was known by fans as ‘Buzz Bomb’ or ‘Lemon’ as they thought he made defenders look like ‘suckers’.[4][5] He left Celtic in March 1978, and moved to the United States to play for Houston Hurricane in their debut season in the NASL. After a disappointing 3 goals in 30 games for a struggling team, he got a surprise offer to rejoin Celtic in September 1978. It was a good move, as Celtic took the League Championship that year and the Scottish Cup in 1980. He was the last Lisbon Lion to retire as a player when he joined Celtic’s coaching staff in November 1980.

I’m always surprised that we have never haven’t signed a US player.

The old Rangers had a couple with Damarcus Beasley and Claudio Reyna.

A US internationalist would help give us greater exposure here in the “land of the free.”

Do we have any scouts looking at prospects in college leagues or in the MLS.

There have been a few players plying their trade down south, Germany and even Italy.

The new pin up prospect, Pulisic, broke through to the Dortmund team last season and looks impressive in recent games for the USA.

Tim Ream of Fulham should be signed for his name alone.

I know a lot of Celtic minded people are active in coaching school sides, so how about drawing the Lennoxtown coaches to promising youngsters?

The ten countries with the most Catholics account for more than half of the world’s Catholics. According to the Vatican figures, they are Brazil (172.2 million), MEXICO (110.9), Philippines (83.6), USA (72.3), Italy (58.0), France (48.3), Colombia (45.3), Spain (43.3), Democratic Republic of Congo (43.2) and Argentina (40.8).

  22. TNT

    The short answer No.

We went all the way to the top of this Scottish government, and fobbed off – the law works to defend the rights of a farmer who can shoot 2 dogs

1 with absolutely no trace of sheep activity – repeat absolutely none, and shot from between 1-3 m away

The other shot whilst running away ( shot first in bahookie from distance) then executed from close range

We spent a lot of money to get forensic results on their activity and death

Not enough for the Police to challenge a farmers activity and lies on the dogs actions

Mind you they did wander into a field in their pet friendly harnesses

And for info – my daughter and her fiancée, charged with a 1959 act / law on sheep protection and dog control or something

Case settled out of court with a monetary award towards the Farmer – I think it was to pay for his bullets

Now case settled, daughter may go to media with story ??

  23. TNT

Should have added only settled in past 2 weeks, hence no comment until such
