Celtic’s financial results for season 2015-16 were announced this afternoon. Turnover increased 1.8% to £52m, but operating expenses (before transfer fees, tax, interest, etc.) were up 7.3% to £57.1m
The club made up the shortfall with a gain on player sales of £12.6m. Against this income, Celtic paid £8.8m for player registrations (which will be amortised against the accounts evenly over the period of player contracts).
Pre-tax profit was £0.5m, with cash at 30 June 2016 up to £10,450.
Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, stated in the accounts, “On the pitch, the year did not meet with our expectations”
“Off the pitch the Company returned to profit, mainly as a result of the transfer of certain player registrations during the period leading to a gain on sale of player registrations of £12.6m (2015: £6.8m). This enables us to continue to deliver long term sustainable football success in a very challenging environment.
“For a club like Celtic, operating in a market where television values have fallen significantly behind our neighbours across Europe, qualification for the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League is of paramount importance. The financial rewards allow for investment in the playing squad and physical assets, but moreover, the prestige of participating in the premier club competition in the world reinforces the reach and importance of the Club to so many people around the world.
“Celtic supporters continue to support the Celtic FC Foundation as it develops into one of the most successful club charitable organisations in the world. That support is not surprising, but it is not taken for granted. I thank everyone involved in the continued success of the Foundation.”
I don’t think there is a direct correlation between not qualifying for the Champions League and player sales, that is correlated with the period remaining on top players’ contracts, but issues around our two years without Champions League football were enormously resolved by the recruit-to-appreciate model.

This is far beyond a blame game,bud. It needs sorting. Labour failed to do so,maybe just as well since they’d have used PFI! Nobody seems willing to grasp the nettle.
Maybe £25bn pa might do that. Say,£150k cost to build a new social house. For 20% of that each year,we can build 33,000 per annum. It would take years to make up the shortfall,but…

I assume (possibly) that because you have refused to respond to any argument I have offered, that you direct that at me (amongst others).
I would suggest that nothing I have said is abusive, merely a robust opinion that disagrees with yours and that you don’t feel your are willing to debate.
There have also been a number of other posters who have made very valid points that you seem reluctant to respond to which is a pity because I would genuinely be interested to hear any counter argument you were able to bring forward.

Brendan Rodgers reminds me so much of Martin O’Neil in as much as we are almost certain to have a grand old time domestically, well thankful for that, scoring lots of goals and being well entertained, but a continuing failure to shut the back the door means we are almost certainly going to flop in Europe and see many more performances like yesterday. Is De Vries or Craig Gordon any better than big Rab Douglas? Don’t get me wrong, if Brendan is as successful as Martin was I’d be absolutely delighted, just commenting on the similarities between the two managers.

Good Afternoon.
In the year 2012 the offical number of people recorded as homeless in Scotland came to 40,000 which is more or less the entire population of Glenrothes in Fife.
Not all of these people made individual applications for housing and by 2015-16 the number of actual homeless applications made to local authorities numbered 34,662.
It is a sad fact that this figure will rise for 2016-17.
Of those who are de facto homeless 46% are single males, 21% single females, 4% famale with children, 4% males with children and the remainder are made up of whole families and people who are caring for a relative or a dependent who is not a child.
Many of those who are homeless in Scotland do not sleep rough but are placed in temporary accommodation such as hostels, bed and breakfasts, down market hotels or end up living with relatives or friends in cramped conditions.
As at 31/3/16 (latest figures) 10,555 households & 5224 dependent children were in “temporary” Accommodation in Scotland and the average length of stay in temporary accommodation was for 23 weeks or almost 6 months.
During that period, a family may well be housed far away from their neighborhood and from friends and family. Kids go to local schools on a temporary basis and very often they then move to another school. There are many instances of children attending 3 separate schools in the one school year.
This is incredibly disruptive and causes real problems for children and parents.
However, these are the lucky ones.
In 2014, 334 people in Glasgow were officially recorded as sleeping rough immediately after being advised by the appropriate authorities that there was no accommodation of any kind whatsoever available for them. This was the first experience these people had of being homeless and given that these are “official” figures where people admitted to sleeping rough unexpectedly, it is anticipated that the true number of people actually sleeping rough for the first time during that period is far far more.
Increasingly, those who do sleep rough are being subjected to assaults, abuse and considerable physical violence. Places like the Simon centre, the Seaman ‘s mission and other charities do their best to cope with an increasing and recurring problem.
The Celtic Charity Foundation started an initiative a few years ago to help the homeless. Homeless people have been fed en masse in the Kerrydale Suite and financial assistance has been given to the appropriate charities to boost their resources and to provide food, clothing, blankets and most of all some emotional and social comfort.
Last year, for the first time, the foundation organised a “sleep out” where people like me would try and raise some money to help.
By this time, you will all know that I and other CQN’ers are doing the sleep out again on 12th November.
Can I please please ask that you give this project and any one of us some financial support if you possibly can?
It is an absolute disgrace that on a yearly basis we tolerate a society where the equivalent of a whole vibrant town are without a home and face a bleak and uncertain future.
We cannot cure the problem, as that is the job of Government, but we can make a difference and bring some comfort and cheer over the winter months where crisis, depression, loneliness and the cold do their worst.

I hesitate to post this and I normally don’t share any information I hear but this one intrigued me.
Apparently Celtic are ready to offer Barton a place in their team should he be released from Rangers. I would have thought from his tweets and windups of Brenda that it would be a no go, but I guess stranger things have happened. It’s outrageous but I can see that it would appeal to Joey, the publicity alone for his book would make it worth it.
