Celtic and AEK’s contrasting preseason preparations

374

Every week, every game, counts at this stage of the season, when players are fighting for full fitness.  Hibs’ remarkable comeback last night after going 0-2 down to Asteras Tripolis will have their Greek opponents wondering if three preseason friendlies was sufficient preparation for a game of that importance.  Hibs have played five games in total.

AEK Athens, who lie in wait for Celtic or Rosenborg, have also played three games since losing the Greek Cup Final on 12 May.  They play a fourth on Tuesday against Galatasaray, their final match before the Champions League third qualification round.

By contrast, Celtic have played five friendlies and are in their second qualification round.  If they overcome Rosenborg, they will face AEK having played 10 games, including the league opener against Livingston.  The difference between four and 10 games is significant.  Four games is nowhere near enough to get a squad ready to perform at their best.

I know no one at Celtic Park or Lennoxtown likes having to come through four qualification rounds.  It provides unnecessary hazard and denies the club access to lucrative friendly competitions, but there is nothing like a competitive focus to get players in shape.

    Word of the Day

    Shenanigans

Often to be found with best friends craic and malarkey in the wee hours of the morning down in the shebeen , shenanigans is believed to have originated in times of yore and has been passed down faithfully and wholeheartedly by each generation of the spawn of Mother Ireland . While others have tried to replicate this social phenomenon tests show that ultimately the purest samples are to be found surrounding certain environments that include friends and refreshments.

Only two players from Croatia’s World Cup squad play in Croatia .

  3. Post in the interest of including the missing part of my last post…

Bradavic and Livakovic ( third choice goalie ) with a total of 6 caps between them are the only players plying their trade in Croatia.

There is no correlation between the country’s performance at the wc and the standard of their league imo.

As far as sevco’s opponents last night, they finished 30 odd points behind top spot.

  4. The CEDB has decided to suspend the Celtic player Šimunovic Jozo for two (2) UEFA competition matches. The player has already served one match and will therefore be suspended for the next match for which he would be otherwise eligible.

  6. Celtic Football Club statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 27 Jul, 2018 16:31

CELTIC Football Club has confirmed that it will issue approximately 800 tickets to visiting supporters for the fixture against Rangers at Celtic Park on September 2. This mirrors the decision announced recently by Rangers.

This is not a development we welcome and it is unfortunate that the initial decision came without any form of discussion. The previous arrangements worked well for both sets of supporters as well as contributing to the status of the fixture as a sporting occasion.

Following the unilateral action by Rangers, we cannot allow our own supporters to be doubly penalised, by having access to the away fixture reduced so dramatically, while not being offered the opportunity to maximise our own support at Celtic Park.

The rules of the SPFL call for ‘reasonable’ provision to be made for visiting supporters, without being specific on numbers. Within that context, we would welcome further discussions involving the two clubs and the SPFL.

Celtic’s decision relates, at this stage, to the match on September 2, 2018.

Meanwhile, Celtic will closely monitor the implications for crowd management and other factors surrounding these fixtures. We will at all times be guided by the interests of our own supporters and the reputation of Scottish football.

“[Sevco] have been told they will not be allowed to host a fan zone at the Ibrox Football Centre next month.

The club announced last month that it would allow 2,000 fans into the Glasgow Life-owned pitch before and after the team’s first home game against St Mirren on August 11.

And [Sevco] chiefs had secured a licence to sell alcohol during the event.

But those plans have been thrown into disarray after community council bosses raised objections against the fan zone over fears it will stop kids playing at the football centre.

Govan councillor Stephen Dornan said: ‘The Community Council took a vote and they decided to retain their opposition to the fan zone.

“My concern is that these matches are controlled by the likes of Sky Sports. If you look at the football schedules the pitch would never be available for kids football ever again.

Rangers should be investing in youth football in the area. They shouldn’t be trying to replace it with burgers and booze.

I can’t sit back and watch a kids’ football pitch being taken away like that.’ ”

    FFin’ reasoned response:

“We should Demand background checks on those making the decision .”
