Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

  1. Word of advice gentlemen. From now on be very careful when talking or writing about this club.

To paraphrase something said about another club, Rangers will not be treated less than others. And although there is no desire to pick fights, be assured that no one will attack Rangers with impunity.

Better, however, to quote Bill Struth: ‘Never fear, inevitably we shall have our years of failure and when they arrive, we must reveal tolerance and sanity. You do that, you will emerge stronger than before.’

Tolerance and sanity. That’s what Rangers will demonstrate and maintain, especially when back at the summit

The SPL will cease to exist once it merges with the SFL – so Green can say he has kept his word if they make it to the top division.

Green said he wouldn’t go where he wasn’t wanted – he wasn’t wanted in SFL1. Will he refuse entry to the “Championship” league?

So, 15 Scottish clubs turned up at Hampden and agreed ‘in principle’ to yet another restructuring of league football. The proposals will be voted on by each league, so presumably either the SFL or the SPL could veto the 12-12-16 proposal. Or they could vote their own league out of existence. Does anyone know if Celtic attended. Peter Lawwell’s first choice was a return to the SPL 10, his second, an SPL of 14. Supporters favour a top division of 16 or more, we now have 12, and we are led to believe that following restructure we will have a top division of er 12. Am I missing something?

  8. The Honest Cover-up on

Jabba does have a point about this season being meaningless for third division teams. It’s a nonsense this is being rushed through. The only people I can see who benefit from it are current div3 teams who will get to milk the Sevconians all over again next season.

Jabba should be careful with his tone though. The SFL clubs have agreed to this as well as SPL clubs. Remember, the SFL clubs who kindly fast tracked his new club into their structure without them having the necessary 3 years of accounts. The SFL clubs who were to become “friends along the way” during Sevco’s adventure. They really are going to end up despised by fans of every other club in the country if they are not already. They’ve only been in existence for 140 days and are already a law into themselves.

  10. Traynor?

The only thing I remember about him is that he coined the phrase ‘succulent lamb’.

That phrase still rattles about when the standards of the MSM are being discussed.

Not much to be remembered for.

How did we miss that one?

Think it might have been Cosgrove – he was in excellent form on Saturday – ripped Chico to pieces. Jabba has had it in for him since he ripped him to shreds last year.

  16. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Jabba is some guy. A couple of years ago when Doncaster proposed a 10-team SPL he was on Shortbread demanding that fans should be listened to -“what other business would ignore their customers?”, etc.

Then last year it was the exact opposite – clubs should NOT listen to their fans.

The guy is an absolute joke. I’m amazed the BBC kept him in a job for so long – a total waste of taxpayers money.

At least Jackson can take a night off – just copy & paste Jabba’s rant for his article tomorrow.

Very much a lurker nowadays but all this talk of reconstruction takes my mind back around 10 years ago since I was suggesting that Celtic should be buying a club in the Conference re -branding it as ??? Celtic ( al la MK Dons) and loaning players to them to establish a mirror image of the Club in England and acclimatise the natives so that in the long term this would create a demand for the real thing. Wonder where such a club might be now?
