Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

under these proposals its being accepted that these so called governing bodies are acceptable really? to our leaders no amount of spinning or plants on bloggs will be acceptable for me on this issue.

TRFC strategy re: LNS inquiry ?

    =========================

Just thinking how this could/may be approached by TRFC, with the LNS inquiry due to start 29th of January.

[Just off the top of my head, so all comments/disagreement warmly welcomed ! ]

    1) TRFC attempt to ‘thoroughly discredit’ the LNS inquiry before the 29th.

    In the run up to the 29th manipulate the MSM to;

    – lambast the inquiry, [& LNS personally ?]

    – try to blame it all on CW/SDM, whereas Charlie is honest as the day is long and deserves a

    break

    – try and pin it all on on the old Rangers, [which TRFC claims to be – but for the purposes of the

LNS inquiry TRFC is a new club/compmay.]

    – the TRFC fans could revert to the default position when they don’t get their own way – i.e.

intimidation and threats liberally directed at LNS/Doncaster/Regan etc…

    2) TRFC attempt to have the LNS inquiry delayed.

Behind the scenes, [or possibly blatantly in the MSM], TRFC attempt to have the SPL delay the inquiry until a ‘more suitable time’, i.e. until league reconstruction has been decided.

Better still, delay again until TRFC are back in the SPL, [or equivalent], when they will have a much stronger negotiating position.

By crowing on about how SFL3 clubs are getting financial windfalls from TRFC visiting fans, this can enhance the planned message that TRFC ‘subsidises’ Scottish football.

    3) TRFC attempt to have the LNS inquiry outcome / decision delayed.

If the inquiry cannot be delayed past the 29th, then TRFC could attempt to have any outcome/decision delayed – again until after the reconstruction has been decided.

And again, preferably for TRFC, the outcome could be delayed until after they are back in the top league.

Any delay does not have to be communicated to the fans either – just don’t say anything at all, [like the SFA], or the SPL could say that it’s taking longer to publicise the outcome “for legal reasons blah blah blah”.

    4) Court of Session involvement ?

TRFC would still have the right of appeal to the SFA – and could even go to the Court of Session again, (?), as the SFA didn’t seem too bothered the last time !

Perhaps the CoS could be TRFC’s ‘get out’ for overturning any LNS decision ?

[And this could keep both the SPL & SFA happy too ? ]

  3. sixtaeseven - 4 fouls 4 cards & penalty, a day in the life on

Why can’t SFA chief executive Stewart Regan come out and say, powerpoint fashion:

“Here are the five main advantages of this new setup:

    1 – xxx

    5 – xxx”

I don’t think he can, cos there ain’t any really (splitity-split was tried and failed elsewhere, ).

Time for the fans to sort it out again.

I’m over twice your age and my experience reflects yours. I would say that none of my family have been on the receiving end of institutional sectariansim either and agree we have to be careful not to overstate the case, whilst recognising the experience of some justifies their perspective to do so as much as ours justifies our own.

It can never be eradicated but the damage done can be limited as long as it is recognised that attitudinal sectarianism does exist and is inbuilt on the part of some .

  5. Tamrabam-But Ogilvie is Scottish Football’s “best administrator”, nobody has ever explained what that means.Does he know which corner of the envelope you put the stamp?

  6. asonofdan et al, agreed.

If they go unpunished and get a leg up to a higher revamped sevco football division, then Scottish football is finished, I won’t ever support it.

    V

  7. I’m pretty certain Sevco will be in bottom tier of Scottish Football next year, so I don’t see any great advantage to them in the proposed set up. O.K. the following year promotion would be easier to attain but in all liklihood they would have gained promotion anyway under the old system. I prefer to focus on Celtic and to live in the here & now. This calls for a couple of shrewd buys in this window and that is my main concern and not the ins and outs of Sevco.

  8. ernie lynch – 17:18 on 8 January, 2013

I think it’s more likely that we’ll start to see the drift back down to launch price (at best) , that people predicted.

The price has been manipulated thus far, not illegally I should add, but the fact that it rose on the first day of trading when over 99% of transactions were sales was ridiculous.

I suspect that the big holders know now, that it’s not going any higher and will be taking profits – they’re on around 30% profit just now and that’s not bad.

I genuinely feel sorry for normal folks (and I don;’t mean fans making an emotional investment) that have been sucked into buying this above launch price, because if they’re not paying attention they’ll make an unrecoverable loss.

  11. Fan power will prevent Sevco getting an undeserved promotion ahead of their time.

Turnbull Hutton was on Radio Scotland at the weekend saying he was comfortable with the new league set up proposals and so on.

I guess he can be trusted an as honest man even if David Longmuir cant so lets wait for the meat on the bones before jumping the gun, the Huns will not be promoted above their “station” clubs and fans wont allow it, simples………….

  16. The Moon Bhoys

The SFA however will not undergo any change and that imo is where the trust issue lies.

Until as such times as they take steps to restore supporters trust in them, reconstruction is not just rearranging the deck chairs, its failing to pump out the water pouring in.

Regardless of where The Rangers end up initially unless steps are taken to reform the SFA root and branch as they allowed Rangers to go bust by not policing the licensing process properly then what is the point of the SFA? We absolutely MUST nail down their purpose.

    Reconstruction is a deflection.

  17. Why are we having a winter shut-down when its so mild that Ive been wearing shorts and tee-shirt?

  18. That thought crossed my mind too bamboo, lovely day here today, ah well I suppose our Bhoys in particular will benefit from the break.

  21. The Battered Bunnet on

I’m somewhere between Gerry and Auldheid age-wise, and I have certainly experienced discrimination in employment during the 80s and 90s – all private sector btw.

Ernie will be able to confirm that Alex Salmond himself acknowledged it happened in the banks as a matter of course during the 80s, while Law Firms and other professions were similarly blighted, and it took a generational change plus the full implementation of Equalities legislation to be largely removed.

I believe it was 2001 before people of Irish descent achieved employment parity in Scotland according to official figures. Women I’m afraid are still waiting. Women of ethnic background are the most discriminated against element in Scottish working life.

While ‘sectarianism’ is vestigial in terms of societal attitudes and behaviours, we do seem to be stubbornly hanging on to at least some old attitudes.
