Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

Regadless of which party they vote for, the majority of views I hear expressed by people in the pubs, football grounds, workplace and anywhere else where folk congregate, reflect the simplicity of the Tory argument. That being so, I very much agree with ernie`s statement.

“Where did all the Tory voters go?”

‘Option A – They got bored of their country estates and moved to places like Glasgow Govan or Inner City Dundee.’

    Those aren’t core Nat seats.

The bedrock support for the Nats has all been in the former Tory heartlands.

    Do a bit of research.

When Salmond blurted out ‘WE didn’t mind the economic side so much’ about Thatcherism, the WE he was referring to were the people who used to vote Tory and who now vote Nat. He relies on people like that in Banff & Buchan to keep him in a seat.

  6. Ernie, for me it’s not about left or right wing any more…whether taken in or out of context. It’s about achieving a position where you become able to assert the collective will of the people.

Bawsman – Capitalism is the reason you’re rich enough to afford a computer, once a luxury only the five richest kings of Europe could afford.

Option C: They changed their point of view.

Ernie’s potted history of the Tories in Scotland is a little… potty.

“It’s Scotland’s Oil” was a campaign launched in the early 70’s that played heavily in the 2 elections of 1974, where the SNP won 7, and then 11 seats.

By 1979, and following the Scotland Act referendum, the SNP returned only 2 Westminster MPs, had disintegrated internally, and remained in the electoral margins for around 10 years. It managed to hang onto its 2 MPs in 1983 and picked up another in 1987, retaining all 3 in 1992.

The rise of the SNP electorally dates from the mid 1990s, by which time the Tory Party in Scotland had been annihilated.

The demise of the Tories in Scotland, from the dominant party in the major cities for over 50 years to the 1970s, to having no elected MPs 20 years later, is attributed to the rebranding of the ‘Progressives’ in Scotland as the Conservative Party, bringing with it the perception that it was little more than the tail of the English Dog, such Dog undertaking a hugely damaging social reorganisation from 1979 onwards.

Their demise benefited the Labour Party in Scotland primarily during this period.

For what it’s worth, which may be little enough, the world, including Scotland, has moved on considerably since then. Many attitudes that were considered social norms as recently as the 80s are now outlawed. There isn’t a Michael Foryth under his own bed let alone under many others, and the prevailing political mood is social democracy rather than dichotomous Left-Right.

    Must go, BJmac just called…

  23. A vote for independence is not a vote for the SNP. The Greens and the Scottish Socialists are also in favour of independence.

If Scotland became independent, the SNP would inevitably split, as it is a very heterogeneous party. The Labour Party would be the main beneficiary of this. In fact the SNP has moved so far to the right in the last few years that it could easily merge with the Labour Party.

One important by-product of the break-up of the UK would be to give a huge boost to a united Ireland. The Union Jack wavers in the north of Ireland would lose their “British” identity and, with the demographic changes already happening there, the game would be up for them.

On the other hand, if Scotland votes No, Peter Lawwell should go straight down to 10 Downing Street and say “Right, we’re part of the UK. So let Celtic into a British Premier League together with Swansea and Cardiff”.

  24. The child benefit debacle will be the undoing of the coalition.

When a family of 4 with two tory voting parents on £50k each still gets full child allowance, and their tory voting neighbours 1 on 65k and the other stay at home mum dont get the benefit, then the real politics of envy emerge.

    Tories jealous of other Tories.

Firstly, and you may well have noticed this, there’s a typo in my post. It should have read Marxist, rather than Marxism.

I didn’t bother to correct it at the time as it was so obvious. I hope it didn’t confuse you unduly.

There’s been a strand of broadly Marxist analysis that predicted the fall of the USSR and its satellites from the start. Indeed it is said, though sadly apocryphally, that the SPGB dismissed the October Revolution as State Capitalist within hours of hearing about it.

What you’ll find is that as younger people grow up the romantic notion of nationalism will give way to a degree of critical analysis.

And as the EU grows in power and influence the idea of nationalism will become less and less relevant.
