Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

  2. Philvis – Since you can only make Scotch in Scotland. How about making production licence applicants have a Scottish Company number. Any multinationals could do it through a subsidiary but that would still need to be based in Scotland.

    Would that frustrate the single market?

    It remains to be seen how things will work out, but the consensus on here and elsewhere yeaterday was that the top 8 will keepo their accrued points, the bottom 8 likewise, but the middle 8 – those scrapping for a place in the following season’s ‘top 12’ will start from scratch – nul points.

    This means that teams that just miss out on a top 8 place are penalised, while those who bomb in the first 22 games get a fresh start. Ditto those coming up from below – the best performers get no more advantage or credit for their early season success than the 4th placed team.

    Non ideal seemed to be the general reaction.

    Because teams in the lower league of 12 might potentially qualify for the top league, it has been suggested that the SPL’s quality criteria will be implemented on all 24 clubs in the set up. These include stadium size and configuration, undersoil heating and the likes.

    This seems unlikely in my view, as there isn’t the money in the game to help the likes of Dumbarton or Ayr Utd extend stadiums and so on. More likely there will be a secondary, lesser, set of crietria for lower 12 teams, with the bar on joining the top 12 remaining as is.

    Means some of the middle 8 teams will potentially be excluded from promotion to the top 12 on quality grounds, as Falkirk were some years ago, which in turn means that, competitively, the middle 8 section is even less valid.

    For example, a middle 8 section that included Ayr, Dumbarton, Queen of the South and Cowdenbeath would ensure that the 4 teams who dropped down from the top 12 could not be relegated, thus creating a set of 14 rounds of meaningless fixtures.

    All great stuff.

    Philvis, if Diageo were unable to comply with the detail of their new whisky license their famous whisky brands would be worthless… now the detail of the license would include such things as HQ location, as well as operational and marketing activities. Thats the great thing about having a truely unique global product, i.e Scotch Whisky. Now the key is to ensure that the license details encourage the industry rather than hinder, as well as ensure containment within scotland. Therefore everyone is a winner. well, assuming any new government in an independant scotland actually implements this!

    Labour = I Can’t Believe They’re Not Tories

    LibDems = Tory Poodles

    Ukip = Rabid Tories

    That’s how it is down here in Ingurland. From an outsider’s perspective I see The SNP trying to do good things in Scotland.

    However, the economic mess that exists, the fake austerity that’s been created, the shock doctrine being applied on the sly in Europe : all this is going to render preconceptions redundant as neo-mediaevalism takes hold. All the cuts announced 2.5 yrs. ago have barely begun to bite and already real hardship is the lot for many.

    Sociopaths and psychopaths are running the whole corrupt mess now. They care nothing except enriching themselves and their cronies, and they do not care if people die in the process.

    So, optimistically,citizens’ innate sense of right and wrong will prevail and wholesale change will take place to supplant failed Captalism. Otherwise, the future is a rocky road.

    Because I’m old enough to remember the decline of the Tory vote and the rise of the Nat vote.

    The watershed seemed to be when the Nats had their ‘It’s Scotland’s Oil’ campaign.

    I can see why the thoughts that slogan provoked would appeal to a Tory.

    It’s no coincidence that the Nats gained ground as the Tories lost it.
