Celtic doing here?

572

Late last night Celtic got their goalkeeper, Scott Bain (26), on loan from Dundee, from where he had already been loaned to Hibs this month, while also landing Jack Hendry (22) on a permanent deal from Dundee.

The Hendry deal is intriguing. The player didn’t get much of a chance to shine before being released by Wigan in the summer. Two dozen games for Dundee later and he is a Celtic player. This is not a conventional career path, so what are Celtic doing here?

First of all, the player has the attributes Brendan Rodgers looks for in a central defender. He has pace and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. The jump from Dens Park to the Allianz Arena is eye-watering, but when you have just signed a four and a half year contract at Celtic, someone must think you are capable of reaching the required standard to play at the latter venue one day.

I don’t know if Jack will make it that far in the game, but I am pretty sure Brendan Rodgers will improve him as a player and craft him into a valuable professional – one we may sell at a profit one day.

Set alongside the signing of Lewis Morgan (21), you can see a strategy here. If a Scottish player in his early 20s raises his profile high enough, we’ll sign him. Only some will make the grade, but the aggregate financial consideration of having these players at the club will probably be profitable.

Alongside all investment in youth sits Marvin Compper (32), one time German international and by all accounts, the real deal. Marvin will have the responsibility of leading the younger defenders through their on-field development.

The other side of the transfer window equation passed without Celtic cashing in any of their premium chips. By the time Moussa took to the field against Hearts on Tuesday, he knew he was going nowhere, and his performance indicated that whatever was previously on his mind had passed. Kieran Tierney’s recent contract renewal seems to have convinced all that there is no business to be had there. I expect some movement out in the summer in the central mid and central def positions.

You and I have been through January transfer windows when the objective has been to make sure we win the league. Now it is all about player development and getting ready for the inevitable Champions League qualifiers. We have not measurably improved our chances against Zenit this month, but it is not clear how possible this is (or even if it is necessary).

The market in England took another step into the ridiculous this window, possibly in anticipation of the announcement of a bumper new TV deal later this month. The new deal will not come into effect until summer 2019, but previously we have seen player values inflate immediately after the deal is announced. Game Theory suggests this inflating possibility will have been anticipated.

What you and I have also pondered for over a decade is when the great English football bubble will burst. I’m not going to predict that date, but just as sure as we knew Rangers would crash and burn years before they did, so will the English Premier League. The model has inherent risks which cannot be safely accommodated. Let’s wait and see how much Sky TV are prepared to pay this time.

  1. BB, D66, disagree with you both. Thought Brendans response was calm, measured frank and well delivered. Or did you miss the nuances where he dropped our humble acceptance to our defeat to the hysterical response by Levein?

    For F..s sake.

I can see your point as most celtic supporters probably would, but for the benefit of the rest of supporters of other teams I still think he should have told that scumbag to feck right off

  3. D66 on 2ND FEBRUARY 2018 1:40 AM

Thanks for the reply but Brendan is much too wide for that patter. HH

I know you’re right mate, I’m still just fuming

    Off to bed too

  5. Brendan Rodgers is a PLC puppet

only fellow midlife crisis gurus will deny that.

Reagan walked oot the door without the plastic

back ae the bus rebels laying a glove on him

the petition peddling culture of football fans

has ensured that, planted cheats like Reagan

and all the others who will follow him, will do so

with consumate ease, like stealing candy from kids.

In the age were fans refuse to be battered wives

Celtic supporters should be warning the PLC, that

the withdrawal of Celtic employs from SFA service

should be announced immediately, and that, if Celtic

PLC don’t launch an investigation into, Reagan’s cover up

of the entire Rangers FC scandal, then the Celtic support

will assume that, Celtic PLC were implicit in that cover up

and, with that level of uncertainty, and mistrust that the

Celtic support have of both, Celtic PLC, and the SFA, that then

leaves the Celtic support in the regrettable situation of

withdrawing all financial support for the conflicted PLC

board, and any SFA financial competions, and this

regrettable action will take immediate effect.

But, the fans urny rebels anymore.

The fans are more like, neighborhood watching

auld sweetie wives, licking their wounds, wondering

    why their always the victims.

Craig Leveine pissed all over Brendan Rodgers Celtic.

Do you know why he did that ?

Because he knows that Celtic FC, have to remain schtum

forevermore, or Celtic PLC’s grubby Old Firm secret will

be exposed and it would mean the end of the PLC

and their pretty bhoy puppet manager.

Maybe one day yous will get it, maybe one day……

    ……..oot.

  7. Kev one day you will get it. The utopia you imagine MIGHT have existed back in the very early days of our existence, certainly not in your lifetime, you no doubt, were a jungle rebel, but the cracks were already there. Up and down the land football owning dinosaurs were raking in fortunes, whilst the stadiums were crumbling.

Some good posts from the likes of Neganon2, Gerry123 and madmitch. Some right Regans post on here but I am aware censorship is strong and I don’t want any reports being sent to the headmaster about my honest views. Wouldn’t want the moderator to “thank” me for giving him the opportunity to ban me. Almost as irritating as the plethora of ads though I understand as a modern Celtic fan that making money is all that really matters.

  11. KEVJ, hope you are well my jungle friend, THE HOOLITS NEST , takes me back a bit , started drinking in there , then on to hasties farm remember that place mate , hope you and ped are good HH

  12. I’m disappointed to see my morning (over here) sparring partner Mags/CELTARELLA has been given a red card again. I had an early night last night so missed the action.

He may be contentious but he has integrity and believes in what he says. We might not all agree with him or one another for that matter but one thing for sure he is NOT a hun.

No group of football supporters share all the same views, even though they share the same goals. To expect everyone to toe the line on this or any other Celtic blog is just ridiculous.

Mags had obviously decided he’d had enough even before last night’s kerfuffle-which I missed!!!-and decided to go out in style. Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb. Turns out he was hung BY the sheep, and I’m disappointed that some posters saw fit to egg on the mod,but heyho.

The pasteurisation of the blog continues apace, and dissent will not be tolerated. Nor independent thinking. We will all become mere nodding donkeys, slaves to the bidding of our betters.

    Kinda like zombies,in fact…

PS-I’m reliably informed that some other posts were deleted at the same time as those of CELTARELLA. Guess which ones?

If you check back to about the time that the moderator was in full glee mode, you’ll see some posts in equally gleeful support of his,the mods, actions.

But none in support of what CELTARELLA had posted.

That’s because the moderator decided to delete them as well. Only,as is usually the case, without mentioning it.

    Utterly pathetic.

  15. BT. Sorry to hear of the death of your uncle. We always hold in high regard those who took us to Celtic Park for the first time. Please pass on my condolences to all those who mourn his passing. He has been remembered in my prayers. RIP.

  16. BMCUW,

I am all for independent thinking and actually like mavericks

But why express yourself using language that contravenes the blogs few rules.

It’s a pity because we need all shades of opinion on here.

Can we start a clique for amnesty for all sin binned posters.

    HH.

  17. Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Friday to you all.

An even bigger, happier Friday for me this week as in just a few hours I stop work for a week’s holiday and, God willing, will be off to Tenerife tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be missed ;-)

  18. BMCUW,

I’m disappointed that the Mod seemed to take pleasure in what for him/her should be a neutral action and not driven by personal feelings toward any poster, despite how much you may disagree with them ;-(

I get things deleted because they don’t like my sense of humour, and I can live with that, but I constantly see four letter word use being ignored.

I know CELTARELLA thought that I had dobbed him in a couple of weeks ago, and nothing could be further from the truth. He had a wee go at me and me being me had a ”go” back at him but not in a malicious way, mostly banter.

I know the brothers all care deeply about Celtic and have misgivings about the Club at Board Level and it’s a great pity 2 of them have been sin-binned and the other is basically p!ssed off with the direction of the blog, but as many on here have obviously found out there is life after CQN.

  19. After a good night`s sleep, I awake still angry at Craig Levein`s comment on Scott Brown. Broonie seems a strong character but will he feel a bit less safe in the public domain as he did before Levein`s thoughtless comment?

    On another matter,

I see that Celtarella`s ban for breaking Blog Rules of decency have been interpreted by BMCUW as` dissent will not be tolerated. Nor independent thinking. We will all become mere nodding donkeys, slaves to the bidding of our betters.` A bit over the top, I would suggest, Bobby.

    and a final matter.

My seat is in 106 in the same spot as we used to stand in The Jungle. The Jungle described by Kev J bears no resemblance to the one I remember. In fact, I remember one occasion when it was reported that the atmosphere was so charged that `even The Jungle supporters were singing`.

If my memory serves me well, the bulk of the noise of our support came from behind the goal at the Celtic End. I used to stand there when I was about fourteen and I left every game hoarse. On leaving The Jungle not so many years later, my voice was rasp clear.

The Past is a Wonderful Country.

    JJ

PS The main point of this post remains the behaviour of Craig Levein.

  20. Jobo,

Don’t forget to make your pick before you go and have a great holiday but don’t commit the schoolbhoy error I did last week by sitting in the ”shade” and getting fried. I went from the whitest guy in SE Asia to Santa Claus red in a very short period of time.

May I also suggest you get yourself some pure aloe vera gel (no additives) which is the best after-sun treatment I have ever come across. Cheap and miraculously effective. Having said that I’m sure seasoned Hispanophile such as yourself doesn’t need that advice.

  21. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good response from Brendan.

    Measured, proportionate, professional.

This week alone I’ve witnessed a complete lack of class in the output from Hearts, Sevco, Motherwell, Dundee, BBC Sport Scotland and the SFA.

This is what Celtic are up against. ALMOST every entity linked to Scottish Football behaves in a parochial fashion and lacks vision.

With these challenges in mind, I believe our clubs approach to changing the game for the better over DECADES is the right one.

Appreciate though the impatience and frustration of other celts.

    Hail hail

Let’s deal with your assertions? Your post (in italics) is a downright lie – please feel free to contact P67 directly. He will confirm that the posts by the individual concerned were the only posts deleted by me!

No glee on my part – I’m the one that has to read all the dross and sweetie-wife tittle-tattle on here besides posts that breach blog rules.

I was asked to moderate in a neutral fashion – which I do. Trust me if I were so inclined – I could easily be more ruthless with deletions on many an occasion.
