Celtic floored by lack of mobility

303

I don’t know if there is a good way to go out of Europe but that was certainly not one.  Copenhagen won their first match by more than a solitary goal since 3 November.  That they had a two-month winter break since then is not a mitigating factor.  We could not have hoped for a better opponent in the knock-out stage of a European competition.

Neil Lennon was correct to say individual errors was to blame; he was also correct in not throwing players under the bus, but this does not tell the whole story.  Copenhagen, tactically and individually, played the game of their season.  They knew what to do to leave Glasgow with a result and set about doing it.

Celtic were the better team until Copenhagen took the lead, but that superiority never overwhelmed the visitors.  In particular, we were short in midfield, where Copenhagen had greater mobility.  Odsonne Edouard was a spectator for much of the game and he often found himself surrounded with three defenders when the ball came his way.

Christopher Jullien was very good, Mohamed Elyounoussi was a real danger until the tank ran dry.  The same affliction befell Tom Rogic, who looked dead on his feet long before the second Copenhagen goal.

While this was a poor performance and dreadful result, it does not compare to the Cluj defeat in August.  Going out of the Europa League at this stage, the last sixteen or quarterfinals makes little difference.  As I said a few days ago, this week’s biggest game in St Johnstone on Sunday.  That becomes our immediate focus.

  3. The externalising of Occult practices to the World is in overdrive.

The Churches are empty, Raves and Dance parties are happening in some of them. That just isnae right.

The olde phrase inverting the pyramid – I’d hazard a guess it is High Level Masonry right there.

    You Must be MuMu……….

NEIL FRANCIS LENNON – Keep going.

  4. My God. The power of ‘High level masonry’? Don’t make me laugh! They are a joke. And known to be. They admit it within themselves. The power of Jesus Christ is way above them. Ask satan. Keep the Faith Petec.

  5. The churches are empty and ‘Raves’ etc are being held in them! So what is new? Our Lord lost his temper in the Temple around 2,000 years ago because of Capitalists. But the Church he founded still survives, despite it’s faults over the centuries. The Church is headed by Christ but contains also us sinners. This is a moment in time. And time is eternal. Think big.

  7. I’ve a read some online articles about how we as a support are somewhat spoilt.

I don’t think that’s the case. I think we’re more than capable of accepting when we get beat by a better team.

It’s when you’re beat by a team that you should have beaten that fans can become very vocal.

P67 is right when he says that reaching the last 16 or last 8 meant little. However, the experience gained would have been invaluable to this team.

I hope Thursday makes us even more determined to get back into the CL next season.

Get the transfer business done early this summer and bring in quality at the back.

Neil also has to take on board his lessons from Cluj and Copenhagen when at times our shape was nothing short of amateur.

  9. Just reading back;

Regarding Jeff Hendricks – why would we be interested ? We’ve better at the club already.

Jeff gives Ireland his all but the brutal truth is he wouldn’t have been near an Ireland team 15 years ago.

No, let’s bring at least one good CB – if Shane Duffy was available, I’d be very interested, he’d be brilliant for us.

If we were to go out and spend at CB, we’d be half way to the ten before a ball is kicked. It’s an area we desperately need strengthened.

  10. I see the heads in the Sand brigade are out with the in peter and Neil we trust tosh

    A couple of points

    1. With our financial power , beating teams like Aberdeen , Motherwell , st Johnstone , Kilmarnock are more an expected than wonderfull management and tactics against clubs with about 10% of our income

    2. The clubs in Europe who are our main rivals , your Copenhagen , Maribor , cluj , Molde , Sparta Prague etc have approx 20- 50% of our income

We will never improve in Europe with a back room team of Neil ( very little experience ) John Kennedy ( zero experience ) No top European coach would play 3 at back 6 in midfield ( 2 wide players who hardy fight )

    3. It had been clear that Eddie up front on his own usually means two or three players on him

When two up front it creates more space for Eddie

    4. One of the reasons that Neil was stuck with that formation was down to peter lawell and his refusal to build a football department with experience to allow us to spend the huge sums we have built up

    5. Nine of our European rivals in point 3 are run like this. Every one of these teams puts all its funds into the team Eg Sparta spent 10m on one player before they got to CL. That’s a third of their turnover

In summary. Happy clap as much as you want But we are being held back by peter lawells autocratic management system

A different CEO who would build a team under him to run the football department is what we need

Ps. We go to IPox in two weeks. If Forrest plays again there he will play like every time he plays there. Ie totally invisible No Celtic legend has his every time he goes to IPox. So please don’t put Forrest in that category

Lenny and the bhoys have my full support.

    HH

    D. :)

  13. Macjay. CEO’s are all different. I have reported to many of them

One was autocratic people were not empowered to do their job

    Every project went through him

    Result Missed targets and markets

Another CEO created a great team , trusted them to get on with it

Results targets met new markets gained fast

Peter lawell is the former type hence our club struggles against its nearest competitors in Europe

If you look at our income position in Europe

We are far down the ladder in performances

What about going for a Ceo from a team in Europe who are paid far less than our present one and one that ensures that every penny goes it the team resulting in better performances in Europe

Not won a knock out tie in 14 years Mate and mostly against teams on a fraction on our turnover

Not one of our competitors has such a large cash in bank as us

We are a football club but not run as one

Ten years and 4 CL qualifiers. Something is going wrong at very top

  14. Ntcham, Elhamed and Christie were missed.

Jozo, Elyonoussi, Rogic and Brown were not fully fit.

The shape was fine up until Jozo’s huge mistake.

At that point we chased the game and point 2 became more relevant. We didn’t have the legs to cover the wide open spaces.

The game was end to end and they won the duels and converted.

    We move on.

Playing football the Celtic way under Neil Lennon will deliver 9 in a row.

  15. I was very impressed by the Copenhagen right back, thought he had a tremendous performance, unfortunately. Anyone know his name?

Recommendations for Celtic games in Belek for Sunday and Wednesday would be appreciated – many thanks.

Some posters have identified the critical factor: missed chances, all else is important but incidental. It has been a recurring theme for quite some time. IMO, of course.

  16. David 17. When Eddie got the ball he was on his own up front and surrounded by 3 players

We should have played griffs up front with Eddie. Eddie been a joy to watch with griffs just in front of him

Neil selecting Elyounoussi in griffs place was baffling as he had not started a game I think for 3 months Baffling to Change it and baffling to Change it with an unfit player

We have been used to that way for last month

Utter baffling. But when you look at the support Neil has on his coaching staff you can see the result Baffling

You seem to welcome a reverse in our onfield performance by citing offield issues.

    The ” I told you so ” approach .

Do you seriously think that hurting Celtic supporters want to hear that ?

Are we supposed to take your point of view ahead of a verbatim account from Lennie ?

    The Herald :

” I’ve been in football for a long, long time as a player, coach and manager and Peter is the best, and sometimes you have to pay for the best,” Lennon said.

“He could have left the club or two of three occasions.

“He makes unpopular decisions with supporters at times and with managers at times, but he does it for the best for the club whether it be in the present time or the future.

“We are lucky to have him. I have a brilliant working relationship with him and think he is worth every penny he is paid.”

    ====================================

We won against Lazio. In spite of P.L.

We lost against Copenhagen. Because of P.L.

I know we all want the best for Celtic.

I simply don`t feel that the anti PL sniping is either accurate or helpful.

    Time to pull together .

  18. Macjay. We fail again and again and again in Europe against teams with a fraction of our income

It’s not “ I told you so “ been saying the same thing when we don’t invest in the team when we are dripping with cash

As for Neil’s statement I and other managers were asked at a board function what we thought of The bad CEO. We of course said he was wonderfull. I of course left latter to a better position as I was not a fan of the company

Neil is of course a Celtic fan. But knows he will never get a better position He asked to strength the team with experience. He was ignored. If Neil was not a fan and had better offers he would be off

  19. Done with the Europa angst personally. Through the change curve. It was a helluva ride.

Someone order me a treble please :)

  20. Personally I don’t see the point in having a slanging match on whether Pedro should stay or go. It makes feck all difference. Pedro will go when either he or Desmond decides.

One might say that following that logic, there is no point in having a blog at all because no matter how much we debate we can’t really change anything. However at least talking about Football & analysing players & team performances is enjoyable.

Whatever about the semantics of where we should be or who our CEO or Manager should be the reality is for this season we have Pedro, Lenny & the present squad. There are 10 League games left we are only sure of a 7 point advantage, we have to play the Huns twice & have 2 tricky aways coming up against Livi & Hibs. We also have a Cup Quarter Final tomorrow.

Now is a time for circling the wagons, unite as a Support behind our Manager & team & tough it out together for next few weeks.

  21. In the first half Varela was crap in my opinion, gave Taylor far too much time to put crosses in, also couldnt handle Ely, this team should have been beaten , we missed at least 6 good chances over 2 legs Eddie 4 McGregor shot when he should have passed and Ely here, their keeper had an incredible one arm lucky block from Griffiths, and they mocked the support at the end .

  22. Corkcelt. I hear what your saying Can’t change now and in a way I agree

Buuuuut. We know what’s going to happen. Sell Eddie for 30m. Replace him with a project to compete with our other project striker

    And cl qualifying shambles again

Then AGM and fantastic balance sheet

Then bonus for CEO and on it goes

When we will draw a line under it ???

  23. Varela ?

A hot poop prospect at Penarol. Signed for Manchester United.Didn’t make it.Wandered about on loan before finally signing for Copenhagen.
