Celtic floored by lack of mobility

303

I don’t know if there is a good way to go out of Europe but that was certainly not one.  Copenhagen won their first match by more than a solitary goal since 3 November.  That they had a two-month winter break since then is not a mitigating factor.  We could not have hoped for a better opponent in the knock-out stage of a European competition.

Neil Lennon was correct to say individual errors was to blame; he was also correct in not throwing players under the bus, but this does not tell the whole story.  Copenhagen, tactically and individually, played the game of their season.  They knew what to do to leave Glasgow with a result and set about doing it.

Celtic were the better team until Copenhagen took the lead, but that superiority never overwhelmed the visitors.  In particular, we were short in midfield, where Copenhagen had greater mobility.  Odsonne Edouard was a spectator for much of the game and he often found himself surrounded with three defenders when the ball came his way.

Christopher Jullien was very good, Mohamed Elyounoussi was a real danger until the tank ran dry.  The same affliction befell Tom Rogic, who looked dead on his feet long before the second Copenhagen goal.

While this was a poor performance and dreadful result, it does not compare to the Cluj defeat in August.  Going out of the Europa League at this stage, the last sixteen or quarterfinals makes little difference.  As I said a few days ago, this week’s biggest game in St Johnstone on Sunday.  That becomes our immediate focus.

  1. Don’t see any mentions – I haven’t looked at all the posts – but Arsenal screwed up every bit as badly as us against Olympiakos.

Probably more so, as they have the Premier League multi millions.

  2. Big Wavy

He has brilliant hair, can tackle too(which sets him apart from all our midfielders)

  3. Corkcelt

That will be very close to the line up, I’d go with Bitton instead of Jozo and go back to 3, 5, 2, play the strongest team, we’re at the business end now and these next 4 games are pivotal to our success. Beat St Johnstone, Livi away, St Mirren at home and secure at least a draw at Ibrox and we’re home and hosed in the league which would allow us to really concentrate on Scottish Cup, its now all about trying to make history.

This league is not over yet because we now face Livi, Sevco and Hibs away, Livi only lost twice at home, Sevco once and Hibs twice, we couldn’t get tougher fixtures.

  4. Republic of Ireland not an International Powerhouse but you don’t pick up 50 plus caps if you have little to offer. I think he could do really well with us.

  5. OK Ghuys, I’m oofff ooottt for a knosh up at local Indian eatery. Keep the Faith,

We were never going to win the Europa, all we lost last night was a bit of pride & money.

We can & will regain our pride and the money doesn’t really matter much,

I give you Glenn Whelan, owner of 91 caps.

The ROI are an absolutely rank rotten football team.

Each to their own but Hendrick has always looked mediocre at best to me.

Ohh, and O’Connor is on loan at Partick 😀

oh well replace him with N Bitton, easy peasy.

  8. Fats Domino the legendary New Orleans blues man had a classic hit with a song entitled Blue Monday, when i woke up this morning to a Blue Friday after the shock of last night’s result. Sport is a wonderful interest but when you allow yourself to get too involved it can play havoc with your emotions, but you keep coming back for more and now the interest switches with a little difficulty to more of the same on Sunday.

Celtic played their 16th game in Europe last night and I must say i have enjoyed mostly the highs with a few exceptions of that marathon journey.

We know how we eventually got floored last night by three bad mistakes and failure to take the many chances over the two legs. Once the Danes scored that first vital goal after a dreadful mistake they were a different team and seemed to have more than eleven on the park, they were popping up all over the place. Even after Eddie scored that intensity increased and we all know the rest.

Sevco and the Danes are well behind in their respective title races but Celtic have a handy 12 point lead and have it all still to play for. One thing getting back to last night’s match, How did Copenhagen’s keeper get away with that headlock foul on Eddie at Celtic’s corner kick? Would Celtic have got a penalty kick if VAR was not in operation?

Celtic qualified for last night’s game on November 7 in Rome! With two matches to spare.

Nearly four months ago. Four months to prepare. Since which, one bad defeat aside, we have played consistently well in Scotland. What we have not done is strengthen the team in any department. Of the four players brought back, or in, none have played more than ten minutes in the first team. Neil Lennon’s tactics will not ameliorate that reality, only better players than those we have will do that. Of course on CQN there are always those who are happy we are out of Europe, we were never going to win it anyway. Think not of a trip to Istanbul, but of a night game up in Livvy on a plastic pitch. Defeating Lazio told me that we had a chance of progressing further in Europe, than we have since 2004, but not by sitting still, by improving the team. We failed to do that. We made it to the last 32, jacked up the ticket prices and hoped. There is always hope, but hope isn’t always enough.

  10. Hankray – good point. We were poor but so also was the ref.Ndoe kept fouling and laughing _ no card.Ref would not have given penalty but for VAR. Calum’goal should have stood. Diddy cup anyway !

  11. Celtic Mac- we need to be beating the like of Copenhagen, if we want to progress in European football, that’s not a sense of entitlement, that’s a fact. They were probably the weakest team we could have been drawn against.

The rest of your line up is a car crash, imo.

You’ve got Elhamed, Shved, Soro, Klimala, with zero football recently, except Elhamed who’s played 4 games, none of the other 3 have any Scottish football experience.

You’ve dropped our 2 best players in Edouard and McGregor, Brown our captain i can understand. You’ve ripped the guts and quality from this team.

Tommy Wright would be kissing you and motivating his players by telling them how little respect they have for them by picking a reserve side. They think they can beat our form side with that and we can be the first team to stop Celtic winning a domestic trophy. You can be heroes, I’d be telling the St Johnstone players.

I can only assume your not interested in a quadruple treble and its all about the league.

  16. “bada bing!!

Totally agree with you there Bing. Could not have had a better draw than the one we got. My main point being that we have had months to prepare for last night’s knockout tie, and yet still went out in the last 32. Never mind soon we will be talking about the CL qualifiers and how we must strengthen before then.

  18. Not sure if this was previously shared.

A really good read on RB Leipzig’s rise and it really isn’t just about money. Great planning, great strategy and a different way of thinking.

RB Leipzig: How did Red Bull build a Champions League side from scratch?

  19. jeez_I_thought_blinker_was_pants on

The Europa Cup was only a bonus, the Lazio games just bumped up our expectations a bit.

Serious Question. Is there a different sets of rules that operate in Scotia for referees?

At 1-2 and 1-3 most of the Danish side were practically in with their fans, Indeed one of them is getting done with assaulting a copper. Colum, Dallas and the like would have booked every single Celtic player involved, remember JVOH getting sent off for this after a booking. At Inverness I think.

Jozo’s been up and down in the spl, we’re doing well.

Ajer’s been sloppy in the spl, we’re doing well.

We’ve missed loads of chances, we’re doing well.

Lennie’s got things rightwrong in the spl, we’re doing well.

Last night we found all this out.

  22. Jeff Hendrick would not get on our bench.Mediocre midfielder.

Watching the Hibs game,we have a tough run of pitches.Plastic, and a couple of Turnip fields,Ibrox, and Hibs.Need to be right up for it.

  24. Last night was our 12th game in 35 days since the return from the winter break. We would all have taken the set of circumstances that have transpired had we been offered such on 1st January 2020.

Lats night was a bad night, a tie for which we were probably 70/30 favourites went against us with two late goals. We played the Celtic way, attacking, open and expansive football but we got caught out and the margins went against us. Had Elhamed, Ntcham and Christie been available, I’m sure we would have progressed.

If we depart Livingston next Wednesday with 3 points, the League will be 99% over. If and when we go up to the park to watch Scott Brown lift 9 in a row, Copenhagen will be long forgotten.

I did say your posts were ‘measured’, so respectfully I did recognize the lack of hysteria. I read your post again, and I was in error. You did in fact express criticism. More genteelly than I would, but I guess I tend more to the hypercritical end of the spectrum, so I failed to absorb it at first blush.😊
