Celtic leave Europe meekly

839

The most frustrating thing about last night’s meek exist from the Europa League is just how self-inflicted it was.  After previous European defeats I criticised Brendan Rodgers tactics, but no tactics in the world will help a team which cannot defend a corner kick or stop a shot from 24 yards into the middle of the goal.

I saw the Hamilton Accies keeper recently concede a similar goal to the second Dorus de Vries failed to keep out of the net last night.  At any level of the game, it was an unforgiveable error.  For years Celtic were imperious at defending corner kicks.  Now, also for years, it has been a persistent weakness.

Celtic have been far too weak at the back this season – not just in Europe.  After the game Brendan suggested we lacked the experience necessary to play in such environments – certainly one of our issues.  Hopefully the addition of Marvin Compper will bring sufficient authority to allow our youthful defenders to progress.

By contrast, Zenit were a study in the art of defence, even at home against a team from Scotland.  We were unable to land a glove on them until the contest was effectively over.  Substitutes Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair both made things happen, but it is difficult to isolate their effect from Zenit’s own tiredness.

This was a European tie which got away.  Sure, Zenit are  better resourced than us, but on the showing over both legs, I’m not convinced they are significantly better than Anderlecht – who played us off Celtic Park but had their own troubles when we visited Belgium in September.

Lots of excuses, Celtic, but we really should have done better.

  1. Watching the Barca Girona game and Dembele does not look like a Barca player. £100 mill of so he cost, wow.

I’m sure he’ll score a belter now but he’s no Suarez or Coutinho, who look made for Barca.

    As Messi makes it 2-1

Evening all, diving in here without reading back, dearie me that’s fatal!

I expectect to get beat in the home game by Zenit but put all my hope in this current Celtic team. Kudos they were immense. I hoped that with the advantage gained we would sneek a win or a well faught draw in Russia. Wrong again, Since hiting the dizzy heights of becoming the invincibles we have spireled downwards at at a phenomenal rate of knots. The backbone of any great team is Goalkeeper?

    Centre half?

    Striker?

    Goalkeeper not fit for purpose.

Centre half, never saw us weaker.

Striker, we can’t buy a goal?

Yip- happy to eat my words tomorrow but I miss Leigh Griffiths and his input,

Celtic should always be an attacking team. Jock Stein, Tommy Burns ‘ The Glasgow Celtic way’!

Celtic fans have always had an element that turn against the manager at the fist sign of weakness, and yes I do believe they support Celtic, again though it’s a small minority.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

    Naw, they don’t!

    They want perfection………….a hun trait!

Celtic don’t deserve their support !

  4. Let KT off the leash tomorrow.

Time to let our creative players create.

Play the ball into scoring areas.

If we do all of the above we will win.

    It’s a simple game.

  6. Here is my take on this season so far.

Brendan has taken the foot of the gas in the League . I honestly think he thought it would be won at a canter and his legacy will be our European performances . The 10 in a row.

All our eggs were in the Euro progress dept.

In my opinion , we haven’t progressed.

I cannot believe Brendan would have been satisfied with our recruitment.

We have yet again underperformed in the transfer market.

I cannot believe we have not got a reliable left back to deputise for KT.

I cannot believe that we didn’t get a number 1 keeper when Craig was crocked.( Danny Ward )

Now the Euro adventure is over , watch us go … full steam ahead domestically , starting tomorrow.

My big fear is Brendan will get increasingly frustrated with our age old trait….lack of ambition.

  7. This season has been horrendous for injuries, I agree that it has hampered us, I have also noticed a few hinting at the training were the cause of the injuries, must have been the same for the two managers prior to Brendan then as they both suffered multiple injuries, the fact our players get the crap kicked out of them without any recourse imo has a huge effect on our players, players holding back every so slightly knowing that they will get booked or sent off has to take it’s toll , then as they aren’t fully committed it can lead to sthem injuring themselfs.

When we have a full squad to choose from, the likes of Paddy, Armstrong, the Griff et all, nobody in scotland can get close.

As for the huns, aye they have improved, they are getting all the help they need from the cheats, but the likes of Killie, Hibs and ourselfs will take points from them, the rest will just lie down to them.

Brendans been here for 2 years and we all know he isn’t God almighty.

A shocking run of injuries which may have impacted on our progress in Europe, 4 trophies in a row in the bag, still in the remaining 2.

    …………………………………………………………………………………..

Nearly post of the day Philbhoy……we do have our deficiencies on the park at the moment/temporarily…..but I for one am confident 7 titles in a row gives us a minimum of 5 out of 6 trophies under BR’s tenure…..terrible time to be a Tim ;-))

If i understand, he is talking about a game where people kick a ball between two sticks which are stuck into the ground. Is this correct?

What a waste of time. Sticks are for throwing and retrieving.

Good luck to the Celts tomorrow, it’s never a cinch when we play in hostile territory – Scotland I mean, not Pittodrie.

Will be a fine time for the chosen combination of 9 and 10 to provide at least a goal each. The misfiring strikers story is getting stale.
