Celtic leave Europe meekly

839

The most frustrating thing about last night’s meek exist from the Europa League is just how self-inflicted it was.  After previous European defeats I criticised Brendan Rodgers tactics, but no tactics in the world will help a team which cannot defend a corner kick or stop a shot from 24 yards into the middle of the goal.

I saw the Hamilton Accies keeper recently concede a similar goal to the second Dorus de Vries failed to keep out of the net last night.  At any level of the game, it was an unforgiveable error.  For years Celtic were imperious at defending corner kicks.  Now, also for years, it has been a persistent weakness.

Celtic have been far too weak at the back this season – not just in Europe.  After the game Brendan suggested we lacked the experience necessary to play in such environments – certainly one of our issues.  Hopefully the addition of Marvin Compper will bring sufficient authority to allow our youthful defenders to progress.

By contrast, Zenit were a study in the art of defence, even at home against a team from Scotland.  We were unable to land a glove on them until the contest was effectively over.  Substitutes Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair both made things happen, but it is difficult to isolate their effect from Zenit’s own tiredness.

This was a European tie which got away.  Sure, Zenit are  better resourced than us, but on the showing over both legs, I’m not convinced they are significantly better than Anderlecht – who played us off Celtic Park but had their own troubles when we visited Belgium in September.

Lots of excuses, Celtic, but we really should have done better.

Happens only once in a blue moon against England so time to marvel at their determination and the joy in the victory.

  10. GreenPinata Cheers amigo. Last Sunday I posted my disagreement with BRs decision to play what we all considered a weakened team against St Johnstone and was subsequently accused of being entitled and ‘hunlike’ by certain posters who do not attend CP. There is a misconception held by many who do not attend CP that it is some kind of nirvana where we all leave with big daft grins on our coupons regardless of the result. The reality is very different. Hh

  11. KevJ…..covered yer bases results wise there…..what do you really think? ;-))…..as to the boards’ apparent meekness and our stupidity as supporters…..we probably should empty the park by not being there for the first televised 5 mins of the next Scottish Cup round…..but we both know that’s not gonna happen….and our board…..as the most financially attractive in Scotland…..should be throwing their weight around…..we can afford a few years without TV income…..;-))

We should refuse the next TV deal (unless it’s a proper bid), return to all games 3 o’clock Sat kick off. The money on the table is not worth the inconvenience.

  13. Mental that Liverpool have signed Suarez, Coutinho and now Salah yet won’t ever win the English league. That’s some crazy talent for not much bucks (until they sold them for lots of bucks).

Hate when I see one or two have a go at him about the work and aims of the Celtic Trust.

Most of what I see (and I don’t keep records of posts from months ago, so I can’t quote anyone – just an impression) seems based on suspicion rather than fact.

I’ve been at one Celtic Trust-organised meeting – nothing Machiavellian as far as I could see – just a group of people on the look out for the best interests of Celtic fans.

I was actually much more concerned about a young chap who gave the views of the Green Brigade (according to him). Seemed much more concerned about the Green Brigade as a stand-alone radical organisation, their (nor our) rights to sing rebel songs at Celtic Park, etc., rather than being concerned about the general, run of the mill Celtic fans.

Anyway – that aside – thanks again to HamiltonTim for helping two fellow Celtic fans.

I’m not saying BT will be a lot better but Sky totally dismiss Scottish Fitba.

  16. Just discovered a version of Bob Marleys ‘Redemption song’ sung by the late greats Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer. Can you imagine a party with those 3 dudes in their prime ? Hh

Cash also does a version of You’ll never walk alone, a bit dreary but worth a listen

  19. BGFC Hamilton Tim does an incredible job for Celtic supporters and deserves a huge amount of credit for his efforts. However over recent years there have been a series of board plants on cqn who have went out of there way to try and denigrate the good work he has done. Hh
