Celtic leave Europe meekly

839

The most frustrating thing about last night’s meek exist from the Europa League is just how self-inflicted it was.  After previous European defeats I criticised Brendan Rodgers tactics, but no tactics in the world will help a team which cannot defend a corner kick or stop a shot from 24 yards into the middle of the goal.

I saw the Hamilton Accies keeper recently concede a similar goal to the second Dorus de Vries failed to keep out of the net last night.  At any level of the game, it was an unforgiveable error.  For years Celtic were imperious at defending corner kicks.  Now, also for years, it has been a persistent weakness.

Celtic have been far too weak at the back this season – not just in Europe.  After the game Brendan suggested we lacked the experience necessary to play in such environments – certainly one of our issues.  Hopefully the addition of Marvin Compper will bring sufficient authority to allow our youthful defenders to progress.

By contrast, Zenit were a study in the art of defence, even at home against a team from Scotland.  We were unable to land a glove on them until the contest was effectively over.  Substitutes Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair both made things happen, but it is difficult to isolate their effect from Zenit’s own tiredness.

This was a European tie which got away.  Sure, Zenit are  better resourced than us, but on the showing over both legs, I’m not convinced they are significantly better than Anderlecht – who played us off Celtic Park but had their own troubles when we visited Belgium in September.

Lots of excuses, Celtic, but we really should have done better.

‘However over recent years there have been a series of board plants on cqn who have went out of there way to try and denigrate the good work he has done.’

I know I shouldn’t, but what evidence do you have for such a statement?

  5. D9 None what so ever. They just appear like uber Celtic fans spouting nonesense on how great PL is and how nasty those pesky Green Brigaders are and then disappear like snow of a dyke. Hh

A wee postscript to my post about the visiting soccer clubs yesterday

at our ground, every team when they arrived stopped to look at our

posters with big Tom advertising our Easter Celtic academy which are

prominent on the big glass facade of our club, now i don’t know what

their thoughts are about our club and the only comment i could catch

was ” your too old, it’s for under 15’s ” but as far as i’m concerned if

they don’t know anything about Celtic then this is the start of their

    education 8-))

  10. Gordon 64,

    Thanks for the reply.

PL may or may not be a great/ cretinous guy. Some of the Green Brigade may or may not be morons/ heroes. However I would be amazed if the board took the time to infiltrate this site for its own ends. On another note, I respect the right of Kev j and Neganon 2 to voice their opinions on all things Celtic, however there is the nagging feeling that the relish, with which they pounce on any set back, is questionable.

Cosy Corner Bhoy from a few weeks ago talking about early starts going to Aberdeen, we got tickets (4 of us) on the Kirkshaws Supporters Bus through AG Bus left at 8am, stopped off at Inverbervie for a pool competition and and a few refreshments the pool competition was in memory of one of the members who had passed away through the dreaded C… anyhow my mate who I had collared at the last minute didn’t realise the 8am start with our vodkas in bottles of lemonade & limeade had to phone his missus at 3pm to enlighten her the kick off was 6.05pm…. happy days

Am sure our team has responded every game after Europe I would expect the same tomorrow

I got the full penny arcade stuff tonight BUT again I would never not attend especially as the wee yin blade was oblivious but she has a magic time, am as gutted as the next Celtic fan about Thursday as I thought our team put themselves in a great position but on the Sevco front “they are buzzin” am sure Brendan will get the Bhoys back on track tomorrow

I’m not a doom and gloomer, I’m more of a glass half full but I’m also a realist, today proved without a doubt that its all systems go for sevco with kilmasonic’s penalty and Lenny suspended for the rest of the season, he will be believe me and watch putrid and dumster saying he brings it on himself.

Tomorrow we’ll get no favours as they don’t fear the sheep as long as mcsleekit is there. madhun, thomshun and beatit are to be expected but clancy and collum are a disgrace.

The latter I believe is an RK teacher, if so he should remember during this Holy Season of Lent what our Saviour said “for what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”, so all his cheating tae get a few European baubles will do him no spiritual good as you cannae take it with you.

The zombie club are light years away from Celtic off the park, however they have fairly caught up with us on the park.

And, like it or not – when it comes to the crunch it’s all about winning on the field of play.

The zombie outfit are the form team now, and the past few weeks also.

I think a wee win tomorrow might help, the Sevs are “back”

Back in the day losing am important game against one of your rivals with quite a few games to is a thing Celtic fans (satnavs or not) would dream of, now “if” getting beat and “only” being 6pts clear & a healthy goal difference is another point ….. level 5 ?????

  19. Oh no… The The Ragers are coming…. Lenny suspended for the rest of the season, wrong,….oh no….it’s only 9 Points according to my future self…..get a grip ffs ;-))

  21. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

We should be light years ahead of that zombie outfit, however we are far from it.

I blame the insane recruitment policy – signing unknown quantities, potential – only hoping to sell them on for a profit.

There is no other valid explanation.

Time to get back to basics – sign players that can win you the domestic competitions.

All this development and European baloney – we are now as competitive in Europe as we were in the early 90’s.

PL knows nothing about football – said that years ago when he was at the helm during the ridiculous dead club 3IAR.

So have many others,so I’ll ask you a wee question.

Seems Brendan’s signings have generally been rubbish. How many of them do you think were anywhere near his own personal list of must-haves?
