Celtic punching with an empty glove

720

I’ve watched a large number of insipid end of season efforts over the years. The one that stands out most is home to Falkirk in 1987. It was probably the first time it was clear to me the white flag had been raised on a campaign (had results gone our way, we could still have won the league that day). Only a year earlier the same squad delivered the most unlikely title in the final game.

There was no white flag yesterday, quite the opposite, the league is all-but won. Instead we looked like a team with a lot of players wondering if they had a future at the club. The next two games, away to Hearts and home to Aberdeen, should provide enough focus to allow the level of performance to rise, but I thought that about the semi-final too.

It’s the end of the road for a few players, and for a system clearly few still believe in.

On the way into the ground a few of us wondered how often Kris Commons would be used going forward. He will be 33 in the summer, ahead of the last year of his contract. Whatever the reason he didn’t make the starting line up yesterday (or last week), his 9 minute cameo demonstrated the directness, not to mention game intelligence and skill, that Celtic are badly lacking.

Despite the plethora of No. 10s and creative wide players we’ve recruited over the last two years, Commons remains by far our most effective creative player. Without him we look to be punching with an empty glove; I hope whoever takes over takes note.

It’s all speculation at the moment. Those rumoured to be in the frame, and, again no corroborating evidence : Stokes, Brown, Milgrew or Commons but before blanketing anyone’s character I think we need more evidence. It may only be kite flying. HH

Agree re Guus Hiddink we should be aiming for the stars again.

  8. If Phil Macg had been right about anything since 2012 then I might be inclined to see his latest as more than a collection of rumours that can be read in multiple places across the web. Unfortunately despite getting us all excited on a regular basis he hasn’t, so his latest ramblings are likely as informed as said internet rumours.

MacIntyre says “let’s hear from some Rangers fans”.

Err – you’ve just heard from Wilson and Jackson. What more do you want?

  10. I have it on very good authority the celtic board are considering Martin O’Neill and Henrik Larsson partnership. O’Neil to solidify the team, Larsson to gain experience and help plan and take over after 1-2 years.

If DD is serious about starting to repair the damage, Peter Lawwell should have his role “clarified”, i.e. told to stay in the boardroom counting the beans, which is what he is good at, leaving all footballing decisions to the new manager, and that should be Guus Hiddink.

If PL finds that unpalatable, he should be bought a one-way ticket to Sunderland.

We should be breaking the bank to get Hiddink. We need a man of stature to sort out the dressing room and restore a bit of steel and pride.

Have they brought in Daniel Cousin yet?

Probably shouldn’t joke about it with so many jobs at stake but didn’t think I would hear D&P involved in such a public way again .

If Guus Hiddink or MON plus Henke were to be appointed it should stop the early hours misery posting on here, I should think until people will complain about Martin’s long ball approach as not being “the Celtic way” . Contraryblightersarewe csc

Hope good authority is not somebody’s auntie who works in the canteen.

  22. Greenbingley is correct, if the rumours are true, the very first decision to be made is to tell Lawell to butt out of the football side of things. A Footballing budget should be agreed with the Manager and how the Manager uses the budget is none of the CEO’s concern.

If Desmond is going hands on that gives me some hope, he is an extremely clever, successful operator and in a Business sense he likes winning and he usually does win.
