Celtic punching with an empty glove

720

I’ve watched a large number of insipid end of season efforts over the years. The one that stands out most is home to Falkirk in 1987. It was probably the first time it was clear to me the white flag had been raised on a campaign (had results gone our way, we could still have won the league that day). Only a year earlier the same squad delivered the most unlikely title in the final game.

There was no white flag yesterday, quite the opposite, the league is all-but won. Instead we looked like a team with a lot of players wondering if they had a future at the club. The next two games, away to Hearts and home to Aberdeen, should provide enough focus to allow the level of performance to rise, but I thought that about the semi-final too.

It’s the end of the road for a few players, and for a system clearly few still believe in.

On the way into the ground a few of us wondered how often Kris Commons would be used going forward. He will be 33 in the summer, ahead of the last year of his contract. Whatever the reason he didn’t make the starting line up yesterday (or last week), his 9 minute cameo demonstrated the directness, not to mention game intelligence and skill, that Celtic are badly lacking.

Despite the plethora of No. 10s and creative wide players we’ve recruited over the last two years, Commons remains by far our most effective creative player. Without him we look to be punching with an empty glove; I hope whoever takes over takes note.

  2. Geordie Munro,

What a prize (those tickets must be like gold dust?) I’ve been meaning to try and catch a game in The Bestest and Most Exciting League in The World (until August anyway as BarcaLite will have moved on and then the Scottish Premiership will of course be the bestest!)

What’s more, it’ll be fascinating to witness Warburton in command of his all conquering heroes before the Glazers inevitably swoop and he puts pen to paper at Old Trafford (respectfully of course).

    Thanks again!

not the ole CQN gauno debate.

I fear that as usual we will end up falling between two stools.

The verdict of the Hillsborough inquest jury will be delivered tomorrow afternoon.

  6. I was there yesterday, wish I had not bothered. Highlights met Marspapa, Fourgreenfields and JJ.

I was disgusted yesterday and embarrassed with the performance of the Champions elect.

Where was the passion, where was the fight, where was the , I better play for place next Season. Never mind let us win it for the Manager.

    Absolute disgrace yesterday.

If for no other reason where was , let us do it for the Supporters.

If and I do mean if we do win the League it will be the worst Celtic Team I will have witnessed that win a League Title. And I have saw a few along with ones we lost. Of the latter I can say at least we put in the effort.

We will probably still get over the line because Aberdeen are gash. Not confident we will beat Hearts.

Yes, we have no God given right to win any League but at least go put and feckn try.

Where’s the incentive to go to the Aberdeen and Motherwell games, both on TV, early K.O. why not just sit in the Pub, have a few scoops and merry.

    Disgusted face…

    100% agree.

For Tynecastle I would drop Brown, Bitton and CKR.

Put Armstrong in the middle with Tom and let’s have a look at Christie through the middle.

sipsini – Talking of prices, I was talking to a hun in work today, he’s just received his renewal for next season, £625 up 25%, £30 to use the finance company plus a £5 internet charge. He reckons they’ll sell 45k of them…

Told him they should have added another £6 onto it and that would have been about right…took him a while..

Agree 100% dropping brown and Bitton and seeing what Armstrong and Christie can offer.

As one of the posters on Phil’s site suggests perhaps a more hands-on approach by DD by having his son involved in some capacity at CFC, reporting directly to DD. All that I can make of it. Hail, hail

Jamesgang …. not usually one to disagree with fellow CQN’ers … particularly one of the few who are actually bigger than me … but

I am not sure about playing Armstrong in the middle this week …. he is someone I really rated when he signed, and still have high hopes that he can do the job for us …but he has been played out of position for so long, and his confidence seems to be gone …. I’m afraid that, with the crowd the way they are (justifiably) feeling just now, unless he puts in the performance of a lifetime, he will hear it, and his already fragile confidence may take another blow …

I know it wont be popular, but I might go with Christie and Biton … (assuming RD goes with 2 in the middle again)

I think motherwell will take something from Pittodrie on Saturday afternoon… Although a loss to hearts in the early kick off might give aberdeen one last chance to raise their game if they hear celtic have lost .

Exciting end to the season where we can clinch a fifth successive league title…

Funny but I really don’t feel enthusiastic… the boy next to me in 106 summed it up when he said ” the sooner this season is over the better “

  18. I haven’t seen Guus Hidiink in the candidate list on the Bookie sites, wonder why, as DD said he wanted Box Office.

Personally if I thought he would retain his stability then it would be Roy Keane for me.

So what if Peter takes a Pan American development role with an experienced Administrator in Situ locally for Fiscal approval as opposed to selection/influence.

Park should go, as signings a drain on resources, and Lows exceed Highs by some margin.

  19. Successful businessmen like DD are typically characterised by a sense of competitiveness, pride and often ego too.

For these reasons alone I find his apparent passivity thus far hard to understand.

He’s been played for a mug it would appear.

A strange reversal of our respective views on the midfield.

You know important I thought brown was. I know how limited you saw him to be.

I think we were both right.

But the world has somewhat changed and turned upside down.

Armstrong has withered on the left wing. Cos he’s not a bliddy winger!
