Celtic punching with an empty glove

720

I’ve watched a large number of insipid end of season efforts over the years. The one that stands out most is home to Falkirk in 1987. It was probably the first time it was clear to me the white flag had been raised on a campaign (had results gone our way, we could still have won the league that day). Only a year earlier the same squad delivered the most unlikely title in the final game.

There was no white flag yesterday, quite the opposite, the league is all-but won. Instead we looked like a team with a lot of players wondering if they had a future at the club. The next two games, away to Hearts and home to Aberdeen, should provide enough focus to allow the level of performance to rise, but I thought that about the semi-final too.

It’s the end of the road for a few players, and for a system clearly few still believe in.

On the way into the ground a few of us wondered how often Kris Commons would be used going forward. He will be 33 in the summer, ahead of the last year of his contract. Whatever the reason he didn’t make the starting line up yesterday (or last week), his 9 minute cameo demonstrated the directness, not to mention game intelligence and skill, that Celtic are badly lacking.

Despite the plethora of No. 10s and creative wide players we’ve recruited over the last two years, Commons remains by far our most effective creative player. Without him we look to be punching with an empty glove; I hope whoever takes over takes note.

Surprised at how emotional I am getting here. I guess the truth is this really could have been me, could have been Celtic fans and the connection is very, very real.

I remember it so well, and I remember being crushed at Easter Road, in the Beach End at Pittodrie, it was par for the course on away days.

On that fateful day at Hillsborough the authorities didn’t do their job. Those fans were treated like an underclass, treated worse than cattle. The price paid was horrifying and remains so. I don’t doubt that those responsible did not intend the human catastrophe, but the cover up was utterly disgusting.

Those 96 people died and the number of lives ruined is a multiple of that figure. God bless those poor families, I hope today they at least find some form of solace.

Dont know about PL meeting Moyes.

But as i was driving by CP at 7.00 this morning.

I saw PL dragging NL around the car park in a sleeping bag.

Lennon wakes up….shouts, what the feck ur ye doing Peter, manages to get to his feet.

PL gives him a massive slap…and shouts, NAWWWW.

NL says….aye awright Peter, ah get the message.

PL stormed off shouting into his phone….’its no ma fault’.

I think they have a few! You should have seen the letter sent! I could also go to the meeting but I disagree with the other protagonists on some issues so will leave them to it!

Nae point in us disagreeing over the boardroom table, defeats the purpose.

oh it will I’m positive of that,

but that’s for another day, today is all about the men woman and children that unlawfully lost their lives attending a football match.

Cup Final ’85 outside the NE corner was the worst I ever experienced.

Crushing was shocking and eventually the fans broke open a large exit gate. Coppers drove their horses through the crowd to block it!

I got my lass through-over the turnstiles, the operators were just wanting people out of the crush-and walked out the other side.

Watched it in The International. She never went back, terrified her.

I also remember once at St Mirren in the early ’80s when the exits were locked at our end.

Now,those are steep stairs, with a funnel effect. Not a f….g word in the papers.

    Oh,and Janefield St?

I’m sure my Dad and plenty others have similar tales. Not only did they not give a monkeys for our wellbeing, they actively opposed it.

    With relish.

  10. Tony

look at the headline I copied, that was day in day out trying to deflect the blame from those found guilty all these years later,as I said his day will come, I’m sure i read somewhere the families were going after him once this was all over.

the worse by far for me was Nottingham, dont know how there was not fatalities that night , thank god

Mackenzie still writes columns in that paper and makes the odd appearance on Question Time. He’s a horrible bigot of a man.

  14. Worst crushing I ever experienced was City Ground in Nottingham when we played Forest in 1983. Crushing in the queues outside, which become worse inside as everyone headed to the first of several sectioned off pens behind the goals.

The Monday Club was to good, I’m suffering today, didn’t get home till 10:30 pm, got up this morning, didn’t know whether to wine my arse, or scratch my watch.

    =====

I stayed in the Mulk for a short time and seem to have missed the wining of the arse? Is it a local tradition that never quite made it up Ardencraig Rd and how exactly is it done?

  16. The worse exit gate in all my time going to games was that daft gate between the jungle and the Celtic end, next to the pie stall, took you out to janefield St. That was a black ops. Program getting out there, ffs man, don’t know how many guys you heard shouting agghhaaa ma shoeeeee, feck yer shoe just keep on going forward, and when you got out, you got swayed onto the wall across the road at the gravy, scary stuff man.

    I heard about that,mate.

As you suggest,a miracle no casualties.

I used to meet up with Forest fans when they played Wimbledon in the early 90s,they were astonished at our support that night.

I was astonished at our performance in the second leg!

  18. AULDHEID let me clarify that, wine my arse, scratch my watch.

As in wine yer watch up, or wined as one would say, as in awe ffs a forgot to wine ma watch up last night :))

  21. G67-City Ground was terrifying, eventually got through turnstiles backwards,a policeman was next through and collapsed holding his chest.I feared the worse,he was trying to get to his inside pocket.I put my hand in and found an inhaler,he was asthmatic.Scary stuff….HH

    “Unlawfully killed by the state”

Am I reading that right in reference to Hillsborough.

    Surely not

A tragic accident that should have been avoided but. ..unlawful killing? ??

  23. TD 67…..Certainly would be a good idea for all the referees to state their favourite team afore the new season starts……after all if the majority of fans support either sevco or CELTIC in Scotland the refs will be the same…..down south majority of fans support the big 6 clubs refs will be likewise……so whats the problem!!! if it works in England excellent……ah but wait its a wee bit different in Scotland,,,….the surname can be a give away.

  24. WHAT IS THE STARS on 26TH APRIL 2016 1:00 PM

Unlawful killing verdict of the inquest – essentially failings from everybody except the fans.

    CPS are considering charges.

  25. Agree re Nottingham. Only time that I feared , regardless of my height strength and fitness ( at the time) that I was in danger of being crushed to death.

Scary stuff. That was on the outside. Once inside that pen, I decided it was either scale it, or be crushed to death. Headlines the next day about ‘ pitch invasions’ were pathetic.

  26. Remember them opening the big outside gate at Nottingham because it was taking too long to get supporters through the turnstiles.

There were hundreds allowed in without any checks for tickets and perhaps into areas that they were not meant to be.
