Celtic punching with an empty glove

720

I’ve watched a large number of insipid end of season efforts over the years. The one that stands out most is home to Falkirk in 1987. It was probably the first time it was clear to me the white flag had been raised on a campaign (had results gone our way, we could still have won the league that day). Only a year earlier the same squad delivered the most unlikely title in the final game.

There was no white flag yesterday, quite the opposite, the league is all-but won. Instead we looked like a team with a lot of players wondering if they had a future at the club. The next two games, away to Hearts and home to Aberdeen, should provide enough focus to allow the level of performance to rise, but I thought that about the semi-final too.

It’s the end of the road for a few players, and for a system clearly few still believe in.

On the way into the ground a few of us wondered how often Kris Commons would be used going forward. He will be 33 in the summer, ahead of the last year of his contract. Whatever the reason he didn’t make the starting line up yesterday (or last week), his 9 minute cameo demonstrated the directness, not to mention game intelligence and skill, that Celtic are badly lacking.

Despite the plethora of No. 10s and creative wide players we’ve recruited over the last two years, Commons remains by far our most effective creative player. Without him we look to be punching with an empty glove; I hope whoever takes over takes note.

should say negating any need for a director of football

  3. Afternoon Timland from a warm hun free mountain valley.

When this first appeared re Pedro voting glibby in, I said at the time I would be very disappointed if he hadn’t voted for him.

At the time there was the choice between a glib and shameless liar with no money and no credit line, or a real genuine billionair.

    It’s a no brainer imo.

  4. Some pretty dodgy ads though Tony bhoy, and people being people…will be nosey!

I’v honestly never noticed I just scroll right to the site? I was on the bus yesterday and never noticed anything, but as I said I never look at them.

  5. Glad to hear to hear that decision on Hillsborough 96.

When I heard on the radio this morning that it would be a majority decision, I feared that it wouldn’t be a favourable verdict for the families.

A lot of the culprits will enjoying their pensions now, though.

Memories —— very few and distinctly lacking in detail . My memory worries me .

I know The Doors played the Isle Of Wight in 1970 .. I was there but have no memories relating to The Doors . My abiding memory of that festival is the dreadful Tiny Tim doing -There’ll always be an England -and the crowd joining in .

Strange-but ffs,Keith Richards managed to write an autobiography,so I’m not alone in that!

I reckon yer memory is like a bucket. Once it’s full, new stuff just overflows.

Actually I was sitting beside a gorgeous big African Queen, hubs huba, what a doll she was, and we got off at the same stop, I said to myself surely she’s not going into the Brazen?………….she didn’t :(

  11. Peter Lawwell gets it tight on these pages but in any communication I have had with him, written he always replies personally.

Regarding Resolution 12, LNS, Corruption in Scottish Football, Title Stripping et al, if you write to him asking for a personal audience you will get one, my brother and friend going this week to see him.

JPT is between a rock and hard place he cannot satisfactorily answer questions of that nature in an e-mail.

So fill your boots and go and see the CEO!

  12. Hope the court ruling for the 96 who dies at Hillsborough brings some closure to the families of the 96 who died.

    justice for the 96.

Long overdue, and a great result for those involved.

I have my thoughts on reasons why this shocking miscarriage of justice took place.

Today is not the time for it.

Yesterday I replied to a post that had (incorrectly) stated ‘50% of English RC were living in Liverpool’.

I was genuinely trying to be helpful to the poster.

You then lifted part of what I had written ( never referenced me) and posted your comments above. Seeking to conflate what I had written as an opportunity for someone to have a bite at PL.

Would you mind explaining to me why you did that?

  20. Heart wrenching scenes at the Hillsborough inquest, at last we have JUSTICE FOR THE 96, 4 ambulances and 6 stretchers for a game of that magnitude, no safety certificate for the stadium, and lie after lie from the yorkshire police force, and that bastard rag of a paper lying for days trying to blame the fans, spreading all sorts of malicious stories, at least now the families have justice, may each and every one of them rest in peace.

I fear they have seen the success of the SLO and Mr Lawwell wouldn’t mind another buffer to absolve some flak in the form of a so called director of football.

The football managers role is not one to be messed with and toning down their influence is going to limit the appeal of the Celtic managers vacancy.

If you get the right manager there is absolutely no need for a director of football.

Talk about over complicating the beautiful game. Spend the six figure sum that a director of football will demand on the first team, youth development or the guy who will be in the dugout and who will ultimately determine our short/medium term future!
