Celtic punching with an empty glove

720

I’ve watched a large number of insipid end of season efforts over the years. The one that stands out most is home to Falkirk in 1987. It was probably the first time it was clear to me the white flag had been raised on a campaign (had results gone our way, we could still have won the league that day). Only a year earlier the same squad delivered the most unlikely title in the final game.

There was no white flag yesterday, quite the opposite, the league is all-but won. Instead we looked like a team with a lot of players wondering if they had a future at the club. The next two games, away to Hearts and home to Aberdeen, should provide enough focus to allow the level of performance to rise, but I thought that about the semi-final too.

It’s the end of the road for a few players, and for a system clearly few still believe in.

On the way into the ground a few of us wondered how often Kris Commons would be used going forward. He will be 33 in the summer, ahead of the last year of his contract. Whatever the reason he didn’t make the starting line up yesterday (or last week), his 9 minute cameo demonstrated the directness, not to mention game intelligence and skill, that Celtic are badly lacking.

Despite the plethora of No. 10s and creative wide players we’ve recruited over the last two years, Commons remains by far our most effective creative player. Without him we look to be punching with an empty glove; I hope whoever takes over takes note.

  1. Martin O’Neil said his father was a Celtic fan. I don’t think he ever claimed to be one himself.

  2. JAMESGANG…

I’ve taken to lurkin mostly of late, to much infighting on here, which is understandable the way we have been playing.

I have seen you posting about your son, keep him at the football… We’ll need a gigantic defender/striker soon. ;))

    Gameofthronescfc.

  3. Spurs dominated game & then suddenly with 18 minutes left its 1-1. Leicester Fans will be praying. A draw here should win them the League.

  4. Remember that I stated this.

We will see a PR attempt by Peter Lawell.

It will be done on Sky TV.

It will most likely be conducted in an interview by Jim White.

We will be told of the changes in the Celtic management strategy during this interview.

The message will be things have gone a wee bit astray ,but here are all the mitigating reasons for it,and “How are you so wonderful Peter?”

We will be told that we are ready for the challenge coming from Rangers ,and it will be a soft endorsement to promote the SPFL ,NOW THAT THE OLD FIRM IS BACK.

    Just wait and see.

    True,

Get a guy who can take players available and make a team out of them.

Systems need proper implementation to be effective.

To many coaches out there who talk the talk but lack the ability to replicate promise.

Perhaps Ronnie would have been successful if left just to bring on the young ones. We shall never know now.

    ——–

I think there’s a decent chance he would have. The problem is the constant pressure to win the league every year, trebles, CL qualification, ten in a row, etc.

As you say we’ll never know!

  7. MON bit overrated. Lost 2 titles to mcleish and won the other 3. Include wages and you’ll find he spent 25m on three players no ta

    I hope you are wrong.

But would not be surprised if you are right.

As i posted today the guys in charge have managed to turn a proud defiant support into a dwindling

    and apathetic fanbase.

Are they so blind to their own failings?

Or arrogant enough to believe in their own superiority complex?

  9. Peter Lawell was also in meetings with Sviachencko’s agent this week.

The purpose was to look at signings for the summer.

Further stoking the stories of who controls our signings.

It would appear we want more cheap options from Scandinavia .

I agree; I was behind Ronny and his ideas from start to finish.

Changing the club from top to bottom was always going to be a colossal job, and it proved too big for him, unsurprisingly. But the ideas are still sound.

The last thing we need now is to fall back on a “safe pair of hands”, meaning the likes of Mackay, Mick McCarthy or even Lenny.

We need a strong, strong man who has enough about him to make the changes we need made, to sort out the dressing room egos, to tell the board to stick to what they are good at, and to tell the bloody truth.

That man IMO is Guus Hiddink.

He was within a hairs’ breadth of joining us 15 years ago. He has always spoken very highly of us. He is out of contract with Chelsea at the end of the season.

He will take no nonsense either from the board or the dressing room.

He is the man to sort us out!

  13. Battered Bunnet, more than that, when we do play with lots of men up front they close down their own space, by being flat and by not standing off their man. They need to make space for themselves within the system, not treat it as something which will magically arise. You make chances by making space, all our system does is make space in front of our back line for the opposition to run into when we lose possession.

  14. Just back in after my evening walk with the 2 dogs……got to the gate in the driveway and there it was staring at me ……I had heard it singing the last few days but never got to see it……had a feeling it would return……somewhere nearby it must be nesting……I thought….then it took off…….the chorus from the wee birds was in full cry…they always love to sing before they hit the sack every night….never ever do they let you down……………faithful through and through………. the bird on the gate post was a song thrush.

  15. Leicester only need to win one of their last 3 games to tie up the title.

Well done – enjoyed their efforts this season.

    Well there’s Pocchetino for you.

    Too set on his 4-2-3-1.

    Doesn’t have a Plan B.

Too reliant on his main striker for scoring.

    :-)

  23. Ronny said the other week that he sits down with all the potential signings to discuss whatever they discuss prior to signing, he said this after we signed CKR.

I wonder how much truth there was in that statement.

    Delighted for Leicester and Ranieri.

A collective of players with one goal – total team work (maybe not quite the local Bhoys but all with a common purpose).

Good luck to them – I’m sure it’s their equivalent of a ’67!

  25. Well done to Ranieri and his battling, fit, motivated and dedicated team after they won convincingly without Yardy.. Their fans yesterday “Four Nil to the One Man team” :))) Brilliant!

    “MON bit overrate…

Think there’s a wee bit of revisionism going on here.

You have to put MO’N’s tenure in the context of what went on before and after his Stewardship.

During his reign we could take to the Field with any team in Europe and know we’d make a good account of ourselves. The performances and results speak for themselves.

As for his spending on players he got a lot of bang for our buck! What did the last £25M we spent buy us?

    No comparision.

    Just my opinion:)
