Celtic spectacular interim accounts released

467

Celtic this afternoon released their interim accounts for the six-month period to 31 December 2016, the figures are as rewarding as expected.

Income was up an incredible 94% on the corresponding period in 2015 to £61.2m (2015: £31.4m). Profit from operations reached £21.4m (2015: £1.6m), although profit on player transfers fell to £2.0, (2015: £12.6m).

Investment in player registrations for the period was £9.5m, not that much higher than 2015’s £6.1m.

To put some perspective on these figures, income for the whole of last season was £52.0m, £9m less than we earned in the first six months of this season. Results against Lincoln Red Imps, Astana and Hapoel Be’er Shiva in the summer have had a huge impact on the club.

The lack of Champions League football during the second half of the campaign will see income drop off, but these figures provide the first solid evidence that income will to £80m this season for the first time, comfortably £50m more than any other Scottish club will earn.

The figures also reflect a significant uplift in sponsorship deals, which kicked-in this season – well done to all concerned.  The post-Brexit vote battering of the pound didn’t do any harm either for a club earning so many euros…….

Good man,thanks-I’ll pass that on to our Little Drammer Bhoy!!!

  2. This may well be selective memory but if all the managers of our opponents were accurate in their statements that their team deserved something from their games against Celtic, we would be languishing in the bottom six and truly in a slump. Indeed, if we had lost the other four a la The Breadman, we would be relegation candidates.

Incidentally, I had a Facebook message from a friend in America which seemed to suggest Fake News would be generated re the surprising comeback in the SuperBowl. I used it as an opportunity to appraise these American readers of the Resurrection Shuffle at Ibrox. The more who know , the better, I feel.

  4. It has often been noticed, indeed, that activist campaigns,

which tend to be conducted in the name of the people as a whole,

neither consult the people nor show much interest in noticing

them – a point that was already obvious to Burke, in considering

the insolence of the French revolutionaries. Such campaigns are

affairs of elites who are seeking to triumph over real or imaginary

adversaries, and who make an impact on politics because they

share, in their hearts, the old socialist view that things must be

changed from the top downwards, and that the people themselves

are not to be trusted now, but only later, when the revolutionary

vanguard has completed its task. – Roger Scruton

The game against Inverness is @12.15 pm on BBC. I expect the crowd to be low. With respect, although it’s part of the treble it cannot be compared to a CL game.

There’s only so much money in early February, the majority of people are paying off Christmas bills and it’s an expense that can be avoided while still being able to watch the match.

Although, if you’re watching in the pub it will be muuuuuuuuuch more expensive.

  13. If the South Stand was redeveloped (at a guessed at – 50 million) and Celtic Park’s capacity was raised to circa 80,000, I think at a conservative estimate it would bring in an additional 7/8 million per season minimum. If we put 15 million of our own money into such a redevelopment that would leave 35 to be mortgaged. Such a redevelopment would maybe take 2 years to complete.

Would only be full the few times we have CL matches – or possibly against the huns. The rest of the time we’d be paying for the upkeep of an enormous stadium. How would it feel again (say) Hamilton Accies. when it would be less than half full?

I am not at all complaining about the cost of a discounted ticket for students as I think it more than represents fair value as it more or less allows a student to each home league match at the cost of just over £10.

Now, that same student then also pays, or has paid for him or her in many cases, to watch Champion’s League matches, Scottish Cup and League Cup matches and that is fair enough and I have no complaint there at all.

However, a season ticket for league matches is a season ticket for league matches except when it is not! In the case of this one league fixture against The Rangers — the discounted cost of the student ticket is £40 — more than a Champions League match and more than against any other team from any other part of the world in any competition.

Celtic are the same, the duration of the game is the same, the stadium facilities are the same, the student is the same, the seat and the view are the same …… the only thing that is different is the opposition.

By the way a student can be in their 50’s or any other age, male or female, from a well to do background or not but the fact is that against all other opposition in the league the student is asked to pay just over £10 per game as an admission fee except against one team. Now why is that?

Is it because Celtic believe that they can get more money for this fixture from full price paying adults who are not prepared to pay to watch each home game but who will happily pay a premium to watch us v The Rangers? In which case the hard up student can simply be priced out the market and told to bugger off despite his or her season long loyalty!

None of this money goes to Rangers or anyone else. It merely sticks in the Celtic coffers and the price hike is purely a Celtic PLC initiative which effects students from every university, college or other further education establishment.

I can’t help but get the feeling that the student, wherever he or she may study, is clearly being marked as a second class citizen here who is being told that when it comes to games against Rangers you will have to pay through the nose because others will if you don’t. If the student doesn’t like it, he or she can always come back when the Champions League anthem is playing because those games are less expensive and the opposition is not quite as important.

Not brilliant marketing or PR for a “stand alone” club in my humble opinion.

  29. BRTH,

Thanks for expanding your point of view. I can see both sides, but I’m not entirely convinced.

it can be argued that the ordinary fan is already subsidising Students enough. Should a 19 year apprentice bricklayer, or a 19 year old full time barmaid pay the full wack , while students who are maybe living at home with a decent part time job get a discount?

Possibly the club are only protecting the feelings of the sensitive wee souls from the horrors of the Attila the Hun mob ( only kidding )

Anyway I do see your view about being welcome for all games bar this one.

Herald Sport Diary: Bonkers bloggers, Beyoncé and big Efe….it’s been an odd week

3 days ago / Neil Cameron

TWITTER gives a voice to those who find it difficult to come out from underneath their maw’s stairs to howl at the moon in public.

Social media is anything but social. Faceless and nameless abusers troll anyone who they have worked out they don’t like for reasons they can’t fully explain. It’s quite remarkable how much vitriol and bigotry the hard of thinking can cram into 140 characters.

The past week has been weird as weird can be for your diarist in more ways than two.

Something you may or may not know is that one Jim Traynor, formerly of this parish of course, runs not only the Rangers PR department but also every newspaper in the country. Sadly for Airdrie’s most (only) famous son, this is not true.

One twitter-er – is that even a word – asked my good self what I thought of the bold Tranzo feeding stories to journalists about the goings-on, or lack of, at Ibrox. I didn’t answer because I’m quite sore that he’s still never given one to me.

So the questioner asked, and remember this isn’t a private online chat, whether I would like to meet him for a coffee to chat about the matter.

That’s what serial killers say. So far I have declined.

Although he was topped by some Celtic fan who enquired whether I was aware that in my match report from Tynecastle “I wrote name “Rangers” thirteen times compared to “Hearts” four? Recount?”

At one point during the counting do you think he felt this was a waste of his life.

But the loony of the week goes to a blogger who didn’t like the cut of one’s jib.

He wrote several thousand words about why he didn’t like me then sent a message to say he wouldn’t be writing about myself. At least for a while.

    Who has the time?

    ……………………………………………………

Returning to Hearts’ drubbing of Rangers on Wednesday night and the Jambos hero Jamie Walker, scorer of two goals, was asked after the game how difficult it had been to play alongside so many new players.

Not especially was the reply but getting all their names was a bit more of a problem.

“It has been great. It was there for everyone to see that we needed to get bodies in. The big man (Goncalves) came in tonight and I thought he was tremendous. The big Greek boy came off the bench and was good as well.”

    ……………………………………………………

Congratulations to Peter ‘medical giant’ Crouch on scoring his 100th Premier League goal during the weeks.

The diary has always held a soft spot for the giant goal-grabber, not because we think he’s a good player, but he’s clearly a lad who doesn’t take himself too seriously.

When once asked what he would be were he not a professional footballer, Crouch with admirable honesty replied; “A virgin.”

    ……………………………………………………

Efe Ambrose is at the time of writing this nonsense still a Celtic player.

He was fully expected to sign for Blackburn Rovers on transfer deadline day but that didn’t happen.

We hear big Efe was with his agent but then lost him at the back post while staring into space.

Bless him, as Brendan Rodgers would say.

    ……………………………………………………

Politics doesn’t usually rear its ugly head in this column; however, we couldn’t allow the announcement from Beyoncé that she is expecting twins to pass without comment.

There are now more black people inside the singing sensation than there is in Donald Trump’s cabinet.

    ……………………………………………………

Mark Warburton has had better weeks.

Humped by Hearts, nuked by some newspapers and savaged by supporters. Made antsy by alliteration.

Among all his words, one nugget was almost lost with everything else he said, and that was about Emerson Hyndman.

The midfielder, on-loan from Bournemouth, actually looks like a player and scored a fine equaliser at Tynecastle which followed up his excellent finish at Motherwell last weekend.

His substitution on the hour did not go down well with the travelling support, something which came across loud and clear on the night.

When asked about his substitution, Warburton said: “He is 20 years old, hasn’t played many 90 minutes and on Saturday he played an outstanding 90 minutes. He is a young, precocious talent and Saturday took a lot out of him.

As Eddie Howe, the Bournemouth manager, hardly gave the young American a look in, something tells me he wouldn’t have cared had Hyndman played the full match.

    ……………………………………………………

Are Celtic fans obsessed with Rangers?

Yes, is the answer to that one.

On Radio Clyde, there was a ‘beat the pundit quiz’ and Tony a Celtic fan called in to take on former Tic man Mark Wilson.

Question: “Who scored Celtic’s winner against Aberdeen on Wednesday?”

Tony: “Aw naw, I cannae remember. I was at a gig.”

Question: “Who got a double for Hearts on the same night against Rangers?”

    “(Immediately) Jamie Walker.”
