I like the below-radar way Celtic have operated this transfer window. Mikael Lustig arrived early without much of a murmur and Rabiu Ibrahim’s trial and signing went through with casual understatement, while Jaroslaw Fojut completed a pre-contract agreement before many of us had even reached his Wikipedia page.
Most of the headlines surrounding Celtic have been in connection with English clubs wanting our players, closely followed by public declarations of ‘I’m going nowhere’ from the players in question.
Compare and contrast with the situation over the city. Almost daily Nikica Jelavic has to deal with a completely different scenario his club have placed him in, today telling STV, “The manager appreciates me and likes me, but I know the club are in a difficult financial situation and if they decided they needed to sell me, I would accept it.”
If you bump into Nikica tell him he’s talking rubbish. His club were recently bought by a billionaire, they have no financial difficulties and they are reliably informed they are going to win their tax case. Rangers players telling the media that their club are in a “difficult financial situation” are miles off-message.

Nikica Jelavic reveals Manchester United £13 million interest

Just days before the crunch game against Kilmarnock, Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic has claimed Manchester United are interested in signing him in the summer for around £13 million.
The striker has scored 18 goals this season for Rangers and he has confirmed the reports in the Croatian media.
Jelavic said: “I know United are interested. My agent has established contact with them but that’s all I know. My agent has mentioned a figure of £13million and I came to Rangers for £4m so it would be a big gain for the club.”
Despite claiming that he is fully focused on Rangers winning the league on Sunday and that he will only think about the transfer in the summer, why did he feel the need to confirm the interest in the first place? He could have done it on Monday.
He added: “I would only think of a transfer in the summer. I’m fine here and enjoying every moment. The Rangers fans give me goosebumps – they really love me and I am looking forward to the Kilmarnock game on Sunday. If we win, it will be the first title I have won where I have been one of the key figures. I would call it my first real title.”
However with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Hernandez, Berbatov and Michael Owen in United’s ranks it will be highly unlikely that Jelavic is signed unless the likes of Owen or Berbatov leaves Old Trafford.
It will also be a blow to incoming manager Ally McCoist who is trying to keep onto his star players for next season, and a further blow to fans who were buoyed by the recent takeover and plans to keep the likes of Allan McGregor at the club also. News that had helped increase sales of season tickets, with the deadline for renewals this week.

If the board of Celtic had engaged in ,allegedly, criminal Tax Evasion, failed to pay bills without the threat of court action and carried out a sectarian signing policy for the major part of its history then I might just understand some of the opprobium heaped upon them. Me, I am just glad they had the wit to run the club in a fiscally sensible, legal manner, because whilst the leagues and cups lost during the downsizing hurt it would be like nothing at all compared to the hurt of knowing that the Celtic I love was on the point of going out of existence.
I maybe a happyclapper, board apologist, deluded fool or even a sheep, but you know what I can take that over being a supporter of the “what used to be called Celtic”.

HMRC state that the club owes £2.8m in back taxes and interest, £2.3m of which has reportedly already been frozen on their behalf. Rangers have just launched an appeal against this charge and the reported £1.4m owing in penalties.
if true and I think it is raises questions about what if anything Rangers declared to the SFA afte the 30th June about the tax item in question.
The SFA justification for approving the UEFA licences last may is that it was not overdue payable. There are 4 conditions that stop a tax bill being an overdue payable and so a reason to refuse the licence under Annex VIII relating to Article 50 of the unpaid tax rules.
The first is it has been paid since 31st March and the last two are it is under appeal at the time of granting the licence. According to the above the appeal is recent. That leaves only the second reason and that is HMRC andRangers had come to an agreement in writing to pay. If that took place when Whyte took over in May then the SFA can claim they are covered. There should be a bit of paper covering the SFA.
However if that agreement to pay is violated it can no longer be a reason to exclude the bill as being an overdue payable . So what was the agreement to pay? Since CW paid £500k up front at the time in May it suggests the balance was due sometime thereafter. If before the 30th June ( 6 weeks or so later) then the failure to pay made it overdue.
Phil Mac reported that SOs were instructed by HMRC on 2 June to act in respect of the bill. From this we can conclude the balance was due by the end of May. certainly before the end of June. If that is not sufficient an indicator then an assessment of the lead time before SO’s eventually called in August (8th or 10th) suggests that the balance was due before the end of June if HMRC started the process in respect of the balance anytime after the end of June.
The significance of this is that it was Rangers responsibility to decalre the sdmall tax bill as an overdue payment if it was no longer covered by the agreement Rangers had signed up to. This is a requirement of Article 66 paras 1 and 2 of the UEFA rules.
It is possible the agreement date for full payment post dated 30 June but not certain. Instead of fobbing off everyone the SFA should ask HMRC if Rangers violated the agreement that allowed the SFA to grant the licence and ask Rangers why they never declared the chnage under article 66.
The SFA may have been told porkies but they need to be careful that in not clarifying the position they become complicit in behaviour that was designed from the start with that initial instalment to enable or fool, depending on one’s view, the SFA to grant a licence when Rangers had no intention of paying that tax by the due dates.
