Celtic’s perils on show again

1679

So are we surprised at last nights’ defeat?  There’s some surprise that we scored three goals away from home, which if we count Moscow, is becoming a habit, if an incredibly lax one, but I’m less surprised we shipped four, again.    Even at full strength, we are several players short of being able to play Ronny Deila’s high-energy pressing game, so when the squad is further depleted by rest, injury and the like, we cannot expect to play an expansive game and come away with a result.

Fortunately the outcome didn’t matter, but it will next time out in this competition.  I’m very supportive of Ronny and think we have not even begun to see the real benefits of his work, but he got it wrong when he opened up a game which did matter in Warsaw.  We’ll need to see if he decides to play this way, with many of these players, in the Round of 32.  For then we either need to add appropriate players or change tactics.

There’s been a bit of chat on how attendance figures are reported.  Football clubs report paid seat sales, which baselines attendance at season ticket sales, but the ‘bums on seats’ figure is usually far lower.

The showbiz side of the game will always want to report the higher figure: see – our fans are faithful through and through, and all that.  Only Manchester United and Arsenal report higher average league attendance figures than Celtic in British football.  This claim maybe reliant on ticket sales, but it is an important indicator of the size, and therefore potential of our club in the right environment.  Not to mention the efforts many thousands go to in order to financially support the club, in sunshine or in shadow.

It was still somewhat refreshing to hear the new newco director inform the media that his club attracted less than 16,000 people for a recent home game.  The cynic would point out that if newco fall into insolvency, the excuses are already established – fans are not as loyal as they claim, blame then, not their unfortunate execs.

Many thanks for all the feedback on the 2015 CQN Annual.  You can order yours here, or get a special Annual-DVD bundle here.

As a special offer, everyone who buys an Annual, or bundle, before Christmas will be entered into a prize draw for a VIP Meal of 4 at a Celtic Park restaurant on a match day.  One entry for each Annual bought; pile in.

Our friends Magners, who I increasingly think get what this club is all about, have offered us another pair of Premium Tickets for the Jock Stein Stand on Sunday.  It’s a great way to watch football, especially on a winter’s day.  To enter the competition, email me celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team Celtic play on Sunday in the subject line of your message.  Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, winners will be informed by email tomorrow, so check your inbox!

The deal I have with Magners is that when we make this offer, we ask you to consider making a £1 (or more) donation to our Mary’s Meals Appeal.  We are working towards building a kitchen at Chibwata Priimary School in Dowa, Malawi, which has 909 pupils and does not have food preparation facilities.

With a kitchen – and Mary’s Meals providing food – they will be able to provide primary school kids with what is often their only square meal of the day.  This work cuts infant mortality, improves school attendance by an average of 30%, and increases life chances exponentially.

No matter what you do today, this £1 will do things you cannot imagine.  It will make your day worthwhile.

I’ll be out with my boys on the bucket collection for the Foundation before kick off on Sunday.  If I’ve not coaxed your last £1 out of you, bring another one along to the game.  The spirit of Celtic needs to take care of those in our own community, as well as in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Sorry for all the calls to action todaym in summary:

The Annual, with a VIP Meal for 4 competition.
The Magners’ competition, email celticquicknews@gmail.com
The Mary’s Meals £1.
See you at the bucket collection on Sunday!

The ambitious multi-million pound exploratory probe sent into the black hole of FIFA has turned itself off after sending back no information at all.

Scientists at the European Mission Control were disappointed that the probe into the dark heart of international football had been launched successfully but then suffered a technical glitch and had to be shut down.

Said the probe’s designer, Mr. Michael Garcia, “We were hoping to find traces of corruption and greed which would give us an explanation into age-old galactic mysteries, such as why Qatar was given the 2020 World Cup.

‘instead”, he continued, “the probe collided with a large body spinning out of control known as Blatter-86, causing the probe to malfunction and to report back that it had found Britain to be the source of all evil in the universe.

The probe, optimistically called Phalia, has now “gone to sleep” and will never be heard from again. Originally the mission was to take the probe as close as possible to the scorching sun (Qatar), but this proved impossible after the crash in which Blatter and anti-blatter exploded, wiping out all the data and leaving Phalia stuck in the shadows.

Came in a couple of hours ago and just watched the QoS Sevco game

    Two observations

    1. QoS are really quite a good team – cracking pace and passing, and the control and finish for the second goal was top drawer

    2. The spineless, cowardly, subservient nature of the questioning of the Sevco manager would make you boak.

The gift that keeps on giving, I really hope this continues to be a lather rinse repeat for the next few years, chances are it will.

Always reading so thought I’d chime in with my occasional random thoughts.

    Few things.

    1. RD, let him have a couple of years. I like his vision of the game more than anyone since MO. Talking about their vision, that is all. I like wee RD. Young man, press and media against him as per, new country, new team, not his players. I’ve seen some slick fitba from players I am not 100% into but that’s cool because RD has two more windows to shape this squad as opposed to try to shape his current squad. He’s got two more windows and a CL crack for me before I am worried. Again, I’ve seen us do some nice stuff this year. Fits and starts but nice all the same.

    2. RC game! I’ll be over in the old country at Christmas for the first time in 10 yrs. Ross County is the game. Had hoped to stay for the Glasgow derby but didn’t happen. Meeting a few old school buddies for first time in 23-24 yrs. Crazy. Can’t wait to see the town on Christmas eve, miss Glasgow. I’ll be there with my da. Used to watch us thrash them 6-2 with him but RC will do. Proper excited. Get annoyed when I see some attitudes, wish I still got to go the games, get in buses and DRIVE and comment afterwards. It’s a privilege to be able to see our team.

    3. KC farewells. The man is leaving us with some sweet video highlights that’s for sure. Reckon we may have just had his 2 best years though. Not against him going, bit part, albeit a decent bit part role at Bolton or something will do his retirement well. Hate it when players go to the press though. Let him go in January, sooner we rebuild the better. Cheers KC, enjoyed watching you many times.

    4. JD is indeed the question. Wish him and Scepovic got a wee bit more time together. He aint our next Henrik, sheesh, may not even be our next Andy Walker but in the right formation and team he could be a Viduka / Sutton type. Is that nonsense? He has the attitude, the build, the guile just not quite the prolific and abundant panache. I’d like to see more of him. He’ll be worth 4-5 for sure in 24 months if nothing else.

    5. HA! Ally was most likely fuming when he saw Lennon do a half decent job as a pundit, I like him as that and almost wish he’d ditched management and followed that path. Ally will follow that path. They’ll love him, he loves him and he isn’t used to being scrutinised like this, he’s Ally fae A Question of Sport trying to have his wicked ways with what’s her face, Sue Barking or something. He’s for the media, column in the paper as well. Maybe him and Durrant can get a wee show on a cable channel, where every week the sketch at the end is wee Durrant’s mother tucking the two of them into a big bed with a big Rankers 1,2 and 3 badge. Night boys.

There’ll be another Rangers, yes. Sally doesn’t do walking away but he will now. He’s not staying in this for the rest of his days. Of all the bitter wee men that would fight his silly wee aproned fight, he’s up there but he’s walking away now. The next beast we face will be a different one. He’s not about to devote the rest of his days to the orange cause. As more so than ever that will be the stronger of the two factions fighting for control of the twice dead beast.

Ps Still love Izzy, Biton and Kayal.

McCoist: I am still Rangers manager for the foreseeable future

    Matthew Lindsay

    Sports Journalist

    Friday 12 December 2014

ALLY McCOIST has insisted that he still expects to be Rangers manager next season and remains fully committed to winning promotion to the SPFL Premiership.

Walking away? Ally McCoist heads down the tunnel at Palmerson Park after Rangers lost 2-0 to Queen of the South. Picture: SNS

McCoist refused to comment after his side crashed to a costly 2-0 defeat by Queen of the South at Palmerston Park on speculation that he had tendered his resignation as manager. He stressed that he would be back at Murray Park with his players tomorrow to assess a loss that gives Hearts the chance to move 12 points clear at the top of the SPFL Championship table.

Asked if he expected to be in charge at Rangers next season, McCoist said: “Absolutely. I am the Rangers manager and that will be the case hopefully for the foreseeable future.

“I have got absolutely no comment, particularly on rumours. I can’t comment at all. I specifically won’t comment on rumours. I have got no comment to make on speculation. I can’t make any comment at all on that other than about tonight’s game and I am extremely disappointed.

“I am the Rangers manager and I will be making sure I can do everything in the upcoming weeks to make sure we are ready to continue the fight for automatic promotion.”

A day of rumour and speculation ended in more uncertainty as the former Rangers striker turned down several chances to explain what had happened.

Reports had emerged in early afternoon suggesting the 52-year-old had handed in his 12-month notice period required by his one-year rolling contract.

Sources later claimed his resignation offer – which could cost the club up to £1.4m in severance payments – had been knocked back by the board.

McCoist, however, travelled with his team to Dumfries and was in the dugout for the match at Palmerston Park. He admitted later that he had spoken to his players before kick-off about the story that had broken earlier in the day and assured them he was still in charge.

He confessed that such speculation about his position had not been the ideal way to prepare for an away game against the third-placed side in the second-tier table.

With his voice clearly wavering at times as he addressed the media, McCoist said: “I told them I was the Rangers manager and I will continue to be the Rangers manager. I am not sure if the speculation affected the players. That would be guess work. But it is not ideal for your preparation, that goes without saying.

“In the grand scheme of things it has been an eventful three and a half, four years, so nothing really shocks you.

“I would not say it angered me. I was completely focused on tonight’s game. It is my job to manage the team and prepare the team.

“You get hiccups along the way. That’s fine. It is my job to react to them. But I have to say to the Rangers supporters that that performance was absolutely not good enough.

“There are no excuses. You cannot make excuses about the speculation. The performance was not good enough. We will look at it again tomorrow morning and move on. We will be in tomorrow morning.

“I can’t have any bearing on speculation. I deal in cold, hard facts. I will sit here and give you an honest opinion. I think you know me well enough. But I cannot comment on speculation.”

McCoist also refused to accepted that Rangers’ chances of winning the SPFL Championship outright had ended with their latest defeat, to which they were consigned by terrific goals in each half from Kevin Holt and Gavin Reilly, and vowed to redouble his efforts to catch Hearts.

He said: “Listen, there is absolutely no doubt that Hearts will be outright favourites to win the league and get automatic promotion. Of that I don’t think anybody is in any doubt. But we will continue to fight all the way.

“The league isn’t yet halfway through. There is a lot of football, a massive amount of football, to be played. If we continue to lay like that we will have no chance of promotion. But we have to improve and I believe there are better individual and team performances in this group than we saw tonight.

“But as we saw tonight to have any chance of automatic promotion we have to perform miles better than we did tonight.”

The head of Rangers’ youth academy, Jimmy Sinclair, is expected to be the next victim of the club’s cost-cutting measures and his impending departure may have had an influence on McCoist’s apparent decision to tender his resignation as manager.

It is understood that Sinclair, who was brought in to run Murray Park in 2006, has been targeted by director Derek Llambias, Mike Ashley’s lieutenant, as he continues to cut costs.
