Chill your jets, excuse to fail

849

Chill your jets.  Far better to win and score five goals in a preseason friendly than to lose, but these games are all about improving fitness, the score is the least important aspect. Notwithstanding that, I’m pleased Teemu Pukki showed some form in front of goal. I don’t think Celtic would stand in his way if he found a potential new employer, but if he remains with us this season, his pace is likely to sit comfortably with the Ronny Deila model.

After missing the bulk of the last two Champions League campaigns through injury and Brazilian diving, news that Scott Brown will miss an extended period as a consequence of his hamstring injury is a blow to club and player.

It could have been worse. Celtic lost Scott for the bulk of last season’s Champions League on 1 October, when they were unable to compensate by tweeking the squad. Expectations are we will be without the player until October and we are only nine days into the transfer window. Lots of time to ensure we are at full strength when the meaty part of the season starts.

Brazil players and Phil Scolari turned up for yesterday’s semifinal wearing Naymar caps in the absence of their star striker. Their Excuse To Fail – emblazoned across their foreheads. Literally!

Add to the mix what can only be described as inappropriately enthusiastic anthem singing, while holding up the no. 10 shirt of, let’s remember, another player, not a fallen war hero, and you have all the ingredients for cloudy and unstructured thinking, instead of focus and awareness.

I don’t doubt this was all well-meaning but it was amateurish naivety. Players should turn up to a stadium with their game plan dominating their minds, not lamenting the loss of their best hope, having been consumed by national pride, one of mankind’s enduring fallacies. The Brazilian FA should immediately sack Roy Hodgson Big Phil.

Has all this Tour de Yorkshire business put you in the mood to get the bike out? If you why don’t you sign up for the Cardenden Cycle, which this year takes place on 6 September. You cycle from Celtic Park to the grave of John Thomson in Cardenden, Fife, a 64 mile journey. Full details are here.

If your cycling days are over, they are looking for drivers and stewards… if you’re available.

Are Celtic going to appeal the Liam Henderson sending off? The ref was a TWAT but thats no surprise. In the first half thems goalie came at least 2 yards out of his box to punch the ball. Both TWATS missed it.

Rangers creditors win 24m settlement from law firm.

I hear that the liquidator’s claim brought against Collyer Bristow has been settled as of yesterday.

Further, it is now likely that criminal proceedings will follow.

The total amounts to a £24m settlement to creditors less liquidators costs.

Settlement covers the following: Breach of undertaking, breach of trust, deceit/conspiracy, admin and liquidation costs, claimant’s costs, interest.

Around £15m of that will likely be attributed to the breach of undertaking by the law firm.

This represents an impressive recovery for creditors.

The settlement would appear to confirm the belief that the Oldco was the victim of a criminal conspiracy.

Had the prima facie evidence available to all of us at the time been accepted by the governing bodies – from the Murray arrangement with Lloyds and the reality that the huge ‘debt’ being floated as a fact was closer to myth than reality (and, bondholders aside, almost entirely a matter of Whyte’s dealings with Ticketus and lack of short-term engagement with the tax process) – then much hurt and suffering would have been avoided.

Messrs Whitey and Whyte will not have enjoyed their breakfast today.

More no doubt to follow in the days to come.

    Scott Brown tried, but failed to get himself sent off playing against Neymar in the Emirates a couple of years before Neymar ever set foot in Celtic Park. He didn’t fail that time though, job done by the Celtic Captain. School playground attitude from a professional footballer. Didn’t see how he got his injury in Germany but imagine it involved an overextended lunge of some sort or other. Either way that’s him out for a few months, something, short of actually buying a new player, we will have to adapt to rapid style. Maybe if Kayal can apply himself the way he did in his first season or so we can do okay without Brown, or well enough to qualify for the Champions League because as Willy Sutton used to say;

I commented to my mate last night that the brazilians singing their anthem had become cringe worthy, and I’m for a bit of passion like most celts. It became a kind of football Haka. Strange. Sad to see the abuse Fred was getting – big Phil should never have played him after his previous performances.

Broony – although it’s a huge blow for us, could this really be the making of young Henderson?

We wouldn’t need to replace Broonie if the most important games of our season came at the end of the season, but they don’t,

And Yes – Kayal / Briton / Johansen / Henderson might work, but equally it might not, and CL qualification is so important to us that it makes doing nothing / hoping for the best a gigantic gamble, imho.

  19. 67 European Cup Winners on

To add a few thoughts on most talked about subjects on here today

Brazil – cant believe they went from win against Chile and Columbia to that – even with loss of Newmar and Silva – chaos at the back, captain Louise failed to marshal and organise the defence – PSG just paid Chelsea 40 or 50 million for him shocking

Brown – its his energy and strength his combative style (that overflowed against Barca – he was a silly boy) that we will miss – I think Biton and possibly Kayal on a good day could fill the football Brown contributes = but no one can replace his bossing of a game – and thats a big big miss

Pukki – Oh dear a couple of goals in Pre Season and we have found the solution – I believe (and I hope to God I am correct) Pukki Balde and Derek were bought with a view to improve them – they are no where near the finished article or more importantly (and rather worryingly) no better than Stokes and Griffiths

Ronny and Johnny – I am hopeful of some good free flowing football – but with it comes exposure – its going to be roller coaster – one fine thing – they remind me of a couple of consultants they say all the right things but can they improve the company (Celtic) if you get my drift

I wouldn’t trust Kayal as far as I could throw him so I would go with Henderson, Biton or McGregor ahead of him. Would even try Virgil/Efe in a holding role for these games if it meant no Kayal.
