Coherent recruitment strategy, in June!

684

There was a standing joke on here for years.  On day one of the transfer window someone would write, “The transfer window’s been open 13 hours and still no news, get your finger out Celtic”.  It mirrored the less jovial comments when the transfer window had 13 hours left, although “get your finger out Celtic” occasionally still featured.

It’s not just Celtic, transfer business is a deadline activity.  Why sell your prime asset early when you know desperate clubs will pay over the odds to appease the manager who is demanding sufficient resources to meet target?

You need to work an angle to pick up prime cuts this early in the window.  We picked up Virgil van Dijk for a paltry £2.6m in June 2013, which is remarkable, considering he is an outstanding player who was working in one of Europe’s heavily scouted leagues.

We got in early with van Dijk, who had been released by Willem II without playing a game before making 62 appearances with Groningen.  A false start followed by a period with just enough form to tempt Celtic’s scouts, but not so much as to alert the slower footed.

So what do we know about Dedryck Boyata?  He’s 24, three years older than Virgil when he joined, but has played around half the number of first team games Virgil had experienced.  Dedryck was vacuumed up by City as a 16-year-old, part of the annual harvest major clubs make each year.  He clearly had something about him to convince City to retain him, but first team outings were rare.  When Celtic came shopping a year ago, City were prepared to live without Jason Denayer for a season, but not Dedryck, who went into their first team squad.

It’s correct to say that knowledge of Dedryck is scarce, even among City fans, but Ronny has spent time on City’s training fields with him, and had him watched extensively in non-first team outings over the last year.

Is he the answer to our defensive prayers?  Time will tell, but the recruitment strategy which brought him here is coherent.  All our scouts and management team have watched him to the extent that a consensus has been reached.  His profile is not high enough to commend a fee which is out with our budget, and most importantly, we can bring him in now, making sure he’s embedded before the potentially lucrative Petrofac Cup Champions League qualifiers.

Welcome to Celtic, Dedryck.

Still laughing, in case you were in any doubt.

  1. By Lefty, I’ll be joining your team tomorrow

Philbhoy, hope and pray all is well with your Ghirl Olivia

Welcome to the World Famous Glasgow Celtic Mr Boyata, your about to meets the best fans in the world as well

Now a striker – Chris Sutton was recommending this one on Sunday for us, strangely he got a Chile reception :-)

In a recent column for the Daily Record, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton suggested that the Bhoys needed to sign a new forward this summer, with a loan move potentially the best option.

With John Guidetti’s temporary spell at an end, Celtic have only Stefan Scepovic to act as realistic back-up to first-choice front-man Leigh Griffiths, and Sutton has suggested another dip into the loan market could prove effective.

“If you can find a young up-and-coming with the same potential as (Jason) Denayer had as a defender it’s a smart way to go,” Sutton wrote; and there just happens to be a perfect option on the books at Manchester United.

Angelo Henriquez is currently on loan at Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb, where he has proved emphatically just how good he is in front of goal.

The Chilean arrived at United with a huge reputation as a prodigious young talent well worth watching, and this season the 21-year-old has scored 29 times in 37 matches for Dinamo.

That includes 20 goals in 25 league matches, three goals in six Europa League games and six goals in six Croatian Cup matches.

Not bad for a player yet to make his competitive debut for United despite signing for the club back in 2012 when he was just 18.

Even then Henriquez had a reputation as a goal-scorer, and that has only increased since he headed out on loan.

It remains unclear what this summer will bring for Henriquez, despite contrasting reports that he could sign for Zagreb in a permanent deal or potentially stay at Old Trafford and fight for a starting spot.

But a loan move to Celtic would suit all parties, with the player still young enough to make it at United but potentially given the chance to show what he can do week in, week out in Scotland and in the Champions League.

It will also give Celtic a bona fide finisher who they could realistically sign on loan from United if they move quickly enough.

    Can someone enlighten me.

What is the point to spending money on juries when a judge can effectively say it does not matter a damn what you think, if I think differently.

    #####

    That’s not quite what happened.

The judge decided, at the end of the prosecution case, and before the defence had started, that even if every bit of evidence put forward by the prosecution was accepted by the jury to be true there still would not have been sufficient evidence to establish that the crime of perjury had been committed.

    He therfore dismissed the case.

    The outcome was no surprise.

In Scotland perjury requires two elements 1. that someone has lied on oath and 2. that the lie has affected the outcome of the case.

It seems there was no evidence led to establish the second element.

Remember that Coulson was a defence witness in the Sheridan case. The prosecution in that case hadn’t relied on his evidence.

Sheridan’s line now seems to be that the case against him depended on evidence given by the NOTW to the police and crown office and that as that evidence had been obtained by illegal means it was tainted and the case against him was therefore fatally flawed. He’s a chancer, but there’s a scintilla of sense in his argument.

Coulson of course is a scumbag and is still maintaining that he never knew about the phone hacking despite having done time for it and that the outcome today confirms his claim.

I really cannot fathom the lack of response to this.

Is it purely apathy, or is something else at play ?

Do the vast majority of Celtic fans think these young supporters bring it on themselves, and thus won’t back them with this petition ?

I really would like to know why in a time when it appears Scotland is more politically aware than ever before, very few deem it necessary to assist.

  15. The 1965 cup final was the first time I saw us winning anything. That goal was the most amazing moment in my life at that time. The noise was astounding but the feeling that it created in me was also remarkable. I had never felt anything like it before; every part of my mind and body roaring with amazement and delight.

After the match outside Hampden grown-ups were hugging each other with tears streaming down their faces. I watched a crowd of Irish supporters one with a fiddle doing some sort of jig as onlookers clapped to the beat and chanted. We weren’t losers and it felt so good. Everything had changed. Changed utterly. I remember the newspaper headline the next day “Worth an 11 year wait” with the picture of Billy heading the winning goal. It’s imprinted on my mind. Things got even better in years to come but that victory made it all possible.

    ——

HT : “Guilty. I’ve signed it for no other reason than I oppose such mass, public demonstrations of sectarianism.”

And so do I. But this resolution is not a condemnation of Orange Parades and their proliferation. It is a condemnation of an orange parade “approved” by a Labour Council and only if it is approved by a Labour Council. In those authorities where OO parades are “approved” by SNP councils, the resolution has nothing to say.

    james gang @ 9.16

“I signed it with one single aim in mind.
To try to hasten the end of formalised expressions of bigotry taking over my home city, intimidating many of its citizens and embarrassing us in front of visitors from abroad.

I’ll sign whichever party is in power in the City Chambers or Holyrood.

And I’d sign it in support of any group that was going to Be singled out for such disparagement. Catholics, Protsstants, Jews, Muslims, Yes voters, No voters…..the lot“

As with HT, I do not doubt your individual sentiment but its not what you are signing. There is no call for Scottish Government action on the matter, as that would embarrass the SNP. There is no call for Westminster legislation for the same reason. There is only a call for GCC and Labour to do something. The only two organisations that tried to do something in 2009 and got a kicking for it are the ones in the firing line here- not the OO.

If there is not to be a bi-partisan approach to limit the parades then who is worthy of more condemnation, a party and a council that tried and failed to limit them, or a party and government that never lifted a finger or made a proposal to tackle the issue? And which of them is in the firing line?

This is an opportunity missed and willfuly missed.

Why just Glasgow then JJ? And why just condemn the Labour Council for this?

    Big Nan @ 10.27

“i am apolitical and only asked that you consider signing.”

Thank goodness for your response. I was beginning to think that I had made my point very badly but you seemed to have grasped it clearly enough.

Here is an account of what was done in the past:-

“Council confident over new policy on parades

    December 4, 2010

Marching organisations have been warned it is in their interests to sign up to a new official policy on parades in Glasgow, with its architects insisting new rules are watertight against legal challenges, writes Gerry Braiden.

Almost 18 months after it was first mooted by Glasgow City Council, the authority’s ground-breaking approach to the 1000-plus parades and demonstrations on its streets each year will come into force next week.

Primarily, though not exclusively, aimed at the Orange Order, the main plank of the policy is to reduce the number of parades by restricting so-called feeder parades, in which smaller marches join main processions. The council also wants to cut the number going through the city centre.

Following a public consultation, the policy – the first of its kind in Scotland and likely to set the template for other local authorities – is set for approval on Thursday, after which it comes into operation.

However, amid reports that the Orange Order will hire a QC to fight the policy, probably citing infringement of European legislation on human rights, the council is robustly defending its proposals by citing the various laws covering it.

Ian Wilson, Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland, has previously said “we will once again need to resort to the courts and human rights legislation to protect our freedoms” if the policy comes into force.”

Here is how The Herald reported the development in May 2011:-

“THE Orange Order has given its backing to the SNP in protest over Labour-run Glasgow City Council’s radical new policy to reduce parades. Although they are vehemently opposed to the break-up of the Union, the order’s two most senior figures have told The Herald Orange Lodges swung behind the Nationalists in this month’s Holyrood election in protest against the new policy.”

If you google SNP proposals on Orange Parades, you will engender precious few hits.

I found a condemnatory statement, but no follow up action, from Pete Wishart in June 2010, I also read a June 2012 Q & A between Humza Yousaf and Kenny McAskill, when he was Justice secretary.

Humza asked him to look at the issue and Kenny said that “The Scottish government has said it is considering legislation to limit the “huge cost implications” for policing Orange walks.

The marches create “significant issues” for police and politicians, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill told MSPs.

But he said it was important any legislation did not limit other “innocuous” organisations such as the Boys’ Brigade.”

The above statements were made in June 2012.

Anybody aware of anything that has happened in the 3 years since?

I stand by my one-sided accusation.

Mmmmm! I’m afraid that attitude will be the wrong way forward for the labour party. It will be it’s death.

The SNP picked up labour policies as the labour party left them at the side of the road. It was easy.

Labour needs to start from scratch. Get “good” local politicians. Honest people who can’t be accused of milking the system. No favours for pals or backhanders. Put systems in place to ensure this.

Build from the community councils up. After that are local authority councils. Work hard. Be honest. Show talent and leadership. Then comes the Scottish Parliament.

It is going to be hard. Iraq, the banking crisis, being embarrassed about Trade Unions, MPs’ expenses fraud & “better together” with the Tories, will be thrown back for years to come. This is the long haul. There is no quick solution (unless the SNP in Edinburgh or Westminster make a total ar*e of it).

I think your “herd” quote explains why the party find itself where it does. Head in sand comes to mind.
