Commons, one of the most influential Celtic players of the decade

441

We’d heard all about Kris Commons when he arrived from Derby County in January 2011, his was a was a name which had floated around the ‘One to watch’ lists for a while, but we didn’t know what we were in for.

In scoring 11 goals in our 14 remaining league games he put up a one man title challenge.  That was the last league Celtic lost, so it remains an open wound, but without Kris’ it would now have been contested.

The music stopped the following season as Kris went until April before opening his account – a fabulous chip as we waved Rangers a goodbye and good-riddance at Celtic Park, but he was back on track the following year.

That season Kris played all 8 games in our Champions League run to the last 16, scored 11 in the league and created a further 12.  There was always a feeling that Scottish clubs had to sacrifice players with flair when playing tier-one opponents, but Kris got his start in the historic game against Barcelona and gave his team-mates a valuable out-ball.

Probably the most important goal he scored in his life was the opener against Shakhter Karagandy in the 2013 Champions League play-off round.  Shakhter were 2-0 up from the first leg and 45 minutes had passed without the breakthrough when Kris collected the ball.  His shot in first-half added time from fully 30 yards swerved away from the keeper into the corner of the net.

The Ronny Delia years will be remembered, among other things, for the manager’s apparent reluctance to use a traditional no. 10, but results determined that Kris was called on.  He scored in four of the five Europa League group stage games he played in last season (we only scored five in total in those games).  A player who appeared to be written-off was clearly indispensable.

The Brendan Rodgers era started with Kris long-term injured, having turned 33, and in the last year of his contract.  Now fit, opportunities to break into a team which looks like breaking records are slight, so joining Neil Lennon at Hibs is an obvious move.  It should work out for both of them.

It’s an emergency loan deal to Hibs, so Kris remains a Celtic player for now, but there’s a good chance the he’ll move permanently when the window opens next month.

Best wishes, Kris, without doubt one of the most influential Celtic players of the decade.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

Watched the Sevco game, only because I am stuck at work and any football is a bonus.

They are second for a reason and it’s not only the officials.

I am glad BR is a true professional and we will make the required preparations for the game at the crumbling Greyskull.

Yes we are a far, far better team, but too many on here totally underestimate them and ate waiting and waiting for the big axe to fall.

BR will tolerate no complacency, and that is why we will get the result. But we should not think it’s only a formality and the result a foregon conclusion.

Respect to the many Celtic people who had to curtail their socializing on the biggest party night of the year, so they could make the journey to Paradise.

HH to all, and especially to those who make the effort at this particular time of the year.

  3. Why do people strike at Christmas time?

Airport strikes over Christmas will destroy many plans for family reunion. It disproportonately affects ordinary people.

Do they never learn : the most potent of industrial action must have public support.

I believe in the right to withdraw labour, but common sense should be paramount. Hitting the wrong targets is plain self defeating.

Especially if it interferes with planned trips to Paradise, or any Celtic game for that matter.

  4. Up with the lark buzzing for the game.

Itching to get out and away on the bus .

What is it about this crazy fitba team that makes u feel like that?

Employers are and have been exploiting the workforce using austerity as a tool to keep them demoralised and reduce terms and conditions

  10. Bit of a chill in the air this morning. Almost had to scrape some frost off the car, in December?

Anyway, gym stuff, visit my wee Mammy, bit of shopping then Celtic Park.

Looking forward to a good performance and three points. Keep Sinclair on the bench unless he is needed, we should be good for three points and I will be very happy with a 2-0.

  11. Yeah, why do people strike at Xmas time?

It’s crackers! They should introduce some kind of Sanity Claus into the legislation!

As for airport strikes, you’re right. Plane self-defeating!

  12. Good morning friends from a dry, pastel skied half cloudy just above freezing East KIlbride. To run or not to run, that is the question.

  13. Malorbhoy ,

Worked in Norway a number of years back, and one of our workmates was a Celtic daft ,born and bred Geordie .

He used to travel with the Tyneside CSC.

Obviously introduced to Celtic by his family he had resisted the easy option of supporting Newcastle.

His knowledge and devotion to Celtic was an inspiration.

  18. BLANTYRETIM – Ye were correct with what ye said about the TonyDonnelly67 situation,….well said amigo HH.

Ma tuppence worth – TD67 has the audacity to ruffle some feathers of those types who deem themselves as being too precious to have they’re feathers ruffled….imho.

    TD67 is,….

    Nasty !

    Devious !

    Devilish !

    Tough as fluk !

But,….the bottom line is – he wants what’s best for the Cellic !

Mr Stein could have all of the traits described above, carved onto his tombstone and, nobody could disagree….could they ?

TD67 may have got it wrong when he said that Commons was p#sh in the SCSF were we got defeated by the died-huns but, although Commons wisny playing…..his cliquey-influence could be felt on the pitch….imho.

Commons did some grand stuff in the hoops and, with Wee Oscar’s folks….imho.

But,…the bottom line for Commons was reached when he raged at the dug oot for getting taken off in Molde…..Commons showed how really cheap he was, raging at a manager in public should have spelt the end there and then….imho.

Ah mean,….would Commons have reacted that way if,….

    Mr Stein ?

    Mr McNeill ?

    Mr Hay ?

    Mr Jansen ?

    Mr O’Neill ?

    Mr Lennon ?

    Big Mr McGhee ?

Johnny Collins wi the keys ?

…where in the dug oot ?

Ah wid say, he wouldn’t have.

Commons was a superstar on the pitch for the Cellic….just at the start of the shooting fish in a barrel era had begun…..and is on going….

    Nae Europe spells apathy….

    Gates falling….

Squirrel targets flagged up for the transfer window opening…

A turn-up for the books canny be ruled oot for hogmany…..can it ?

    Hmmmm….?

‘Why do people strike at Christmas time?’

    ##

Because we live in a capitalist economy. A dog eat dog society. A rat race.

And in a capitalist economy being ruthless is necessary for real success.

Indeed it is an attribute that many people praise. They say that being ruthless and selfish are integral, innate parts of human nature. They say that that is why capitalism is such a good system. Because it reflects human nature.

That’s why people strike at Christmas time.
