Concertina league, frustration, Joey for halftime draw

1110

We waited three long years to get there but I suspect I’m not the only one who will be relived we’re not plunging straight into another Champions League game. Most Celtic fans shrugged the Camp Nou defeat off, but I hear the players have taken it all a bit personal. They want to respond appropriately in that tournament, however, there is the small matter of a trip to Inverness to deal with first.

Wheels come of the Celtic barrow at Inverness. Repeatedly. On paper, the Highlanders have endured an awful start to the season, but if you drill down you’ll see that their five league games have seen them play Aberdeen and Hearts away, and lose a local derby to Ross County. Form will improve when they face lesser-resourced teams.

Statistically, you are more likely to drop points away from home after an away European tie than at any other time. Ronny Deila defied these odds during his tenure, let’s hope Brendan manages to channel the frustration in the dressing room into a performance and result against Inverness.

While Celtic and Hearts have opened up a gap at the top of the table, the rest of the league went through a concertina last weekend. Any team from 10th placed Kilmarnock and up could go third over the weekend.  Does that make it the most competitive in Europe?  You could make a case, the champions aside.

Joint-fourth Ross County will go third if they win at Ibrox, while Aberdeen, Dundee and St Johnstone will all fancy their chances of being third if County can only take a point.

I was pretty keen on Joey Barton heading to Ibrox this season and his actions over the last 24 hours show why. No idea what happened on Tuesday, but he issued an apology of sorts on Twitter last night, before deleting it, and then went on live radio this morning saying, “I don’t think I’ve done anything to apologise for”.

You know best, Joey. Don’t take any crap from a manager with five games of top-flight football on his CV, or team-mates who don’t deserve to be on the same field as you. Apologise for telling it as it is? I don’t think so.

Mark my words, we’ll have him doing the halftime draw soon enough.

The Kano Foundation

Sannabhoy asked me to share this from The Kano Foundation, who will support their 5000th child at the Kilmarnock game later this month.

5000 kids! I’ve no idea the extent of the social impact The Kano Foundation is having, but it’s awe inspiring. It grew from the CQN community, when our pal Martin Kane, who is no longer with us, took seriously ill.

After we Brought Martin Home, the guys involved realised they would be able to harness this force for good going forward, and the Foundation was born – out of your efforts.

Here’s what Sannabhoy had to say:

“The Kano Foundation is holding our annual bucket collection at Celtic Park before the Killie game on the 24th of September. This game also marks the 5000th child that we will take through the turnstiles to see Celtic.

“We are really keen/ desperate to have as many people help us with the bucket collection as possible as every penny raised goes towards allowing more children to get to see Celtic.

“If you can spare an hour or so please get in touch with us as we would be absolutely delighted to have as many people as possible rattling buckets. Please drop a note to Sannabhoy at Sannabhoy@thekanofoundation.com or go online to our website The Kano Foundation.

“Every single volunteer is worth about £50-100 to us so the more we have, the more we can raise and the more kids we can take to Celtic Park. We are now up to 102 child tickets at each game meaning we can now take almost 2000 kids each season.

Thanks and Hail Hail.”

You’ll speak to a hundred Celtic fans, have a great day and the weather’s going to be warm and sunny, I promise, so go sign up.

  1. See from “News Now” that the Daily Ranger running an article with tangential snipe at Celtic re the behaviour of two former employees. Perhaps it was this sort of article to which Auldheid was referring before iur game with thems. Why any Celtic f amily continues to buy that rag I cannot understand. HH

  8. Not quite the same incentive this week to achieve a fast time in the ole ParkRun but a most gorgeous morning to have an enjoyable slog around (part of) Strathclyde Park. Always better when the nicer weather brings out the shorter shorts. For the women runners too ;-)

  9. Don’t let them Sandaza you Joey. You’re playing a blinder. It’s funny cos when he was in England with Rangers I rated him- now he is with sevco he seems to have lost 2 yards

  10. T-REX…” Get it On”, one of the greatest rick n roll songs ever !

I saw them live twice in the very early 1970s, when they played that song just before it came out. Both occasions it was in the Greens Playhouse in Glasgow. Later became the Apollo.

RIP Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn.

  11. I had a fabulous night at the Celtic Musical last night It was brilliant, the performers on stage where outstanding, took me back it did, sad times and happy times, memories of old games, old friends and family and I have to say I welld up a few times.

The songs took me back to the old days, and where all sung in sinc as they used to be ( my pet hate now is the rush to fin a song at Celtic Park) no effigys hanging from the balconies, no politics, just an all round great night about Celtic and Celtic supporters they way it used to be, no split in the theatre and everyone both young and old having a great Celtic supporters night out, if you get a chance? Don’t miss it, well done to all involved, even Wee ten thirty (Bertie Auld) played his part in the enjoyment for all and was a star.

  12. Jobo, that sort of talk is frowned upon nowadays. . Enjoy your run, the Strathy one is nice and level , as you know, cannot comment on the views as I have not done it for a few years.

I will likely try my local round the doors 5K later on, it’s a sore one but I need the test after the holidays, almost 5 lbs added despite my 4 runs in the heat. Better get on with it, walk towards parents, walk back home, get 5K done, bit of gardening , vigil mass then a bit of tv football. Sorted.

  13. This is an old Celtic song that my DA bought for me after we won the BIG CUP it’s sung by the late great Matt McGinn…”.The Bhoys from Lisbon”, you will get it on YouTube. I can’t post it on here due to technical probs with my desktop.

The “b” side is not to shabby either, ” I’m looking for a job”…my party piece when in strange company.

Question for all – I still have this record. Who was the very 1st Celtic player to cut a record ? For you young wans, a record was before CDs !

I will provide the answer in 24 hours prior to the game v Inverness, IF noone gets it ?

    NOT a trick question !

  14. Tony D

Glad you enjoyed the musical but a bit rose tinted about the ole days – quite often the Celtic end and the Jungle sang different stuff – sometimes at the same time :-)

The Rebs were sung loud and proud – so don’t know about ‘no politics’

I agree they were great days – but we were not plaster saints.

    hail hail

  15. Morning all.

I gather the Scottish Government has described the hanging of those dolls as “inappropriate”. While I agree, I would be more convinced of their concern and even handedness if the then Justice Minister hadn’t been so fullsome in his praise of the deid team’s appalling song sheet at Hampden a couple of seasons ago.

  16. Big Jimmy,

morning all, seem to remember the much maligned Frank Haffey being a bit of a singer, so that would be my guess.

    HH

  17. Form from James Forrest coincided with his release from detention in the dreaded wide left position at Celtic and now the latest detainee Stuart Armstrong shows some glimpses of play that will get him in the Celtic engine room, proper from time to time at least.

Whether either of that pair will start at Inverness is another matter because it’s a squad game especially up there, were points are a premium and Celtic often toil to get passéd a very stationary bus.

Patrick Roberts may be the key to unlock the door after suffering in Spain with the rest of the side who failed to mount the herculean effort required to the trouble the super human Catalunyan monster. Tom Rogic showed more form last Saturday than Stuart has in most of his time at Celtic, even though he’s a nice speaker on CTV, he’ll need learn the art of getting down ,getting dirty and getting up again, if he’s to have a Celtic career after all.

The other talking points may be whether Cristian Gamboa retains his place this time in a more regular back four, and will Mikel Lustig make way for fresh legs?- maybe unlikely after such a suffocating debut. Can Craig Gordon ‘play’ his way back into the side as Dorus De Vries has done nothing of note? – unlikely as yet and it seems BR has made his bed.

One things certain, a new hero will lead the Celtic line.

Score forecast Inverness 0 Celtic 4

Their team get hammered and then their supposed talismanic midfielder reveals himself as the maniac he always was. It’s no surprise there are diversionary headlines. The words they use and the expected social media replies should be legally actionable.
