Concertina league, frustration, Joey for halftime draw

1110

We waited three long years to get there but I suspect I’m not the only one who will be relived we’re not plunging straight into another Champions League game. Most Celtic fans shrugged the Camp Nou defeat off, but I hear the players have taken it all a bit personal. They want to respond appropriately in that tournament, however, there is the small matter of a trip to Inverness to deal with first.

Wheels come of the Celtic barrow at Inverness. Repeatedly. On paper, the Highlanders have endured an awful start to the season, but if you drill down you’ll see that their five league games have seen them play Aberdeen and Hearts away, and lose a local derby to Ross County. Form will improve when they face lesser-resourced teams.

Statistically, you are more likely to drop points away from home after an away European tie than at any other time. Ronny Deila defied these odds during his tenure, let’s hope Brendan manages to channel the frustration in the dressing room into a performance and result against Inverness.

While Celtic and Hearts have opened up a gap at the top of the table, the rest of the league went through a concertina last weekend. Any team from 10th placed Kilmarnock and up could go third over the weekend.  Does that make it the most competitive in Europe?  You could make a case, the champions aside.

Joint-fourth Ross County will go third if they win at Ibrox, while Aberdeen, Dundee and St Johnstone will all fancy their chances of being third if County can only take a point.

I was pretty keen on Joey Barton heading to Ibrox this season and his actions over the last 24 hours show why. No idea what happened on Tuesday, but he issued an apology of sorts on Twitter last night, before deleting it, and then went on live radio this morning saying, “I don’t think I’ve done anything to apologise for”.

You know best, Joey. Don’t take any crap from a manager with five games of top-flight football on his CV, or team-mates who don’t deserve to be on the same field as you. Apologise for telling it as it is? I don’t think so.

Mark my words, we’ll have him doing the halftime draw soon enough.

The Kano Foundation

Sannabhoy asked me to share this from The Kano Foundation, who will support their 5000th child at the Kilmarnock game later this month.

5000 kids! I’ve no idea the extent of the social impact The Kano Foundation is having, but it’s awe inspiring. It grew from the CQN community, when our pal Martin Kane, who is no longer with us, took seriously ill.

After we Brought Martin Home, the guys involved realised they would be able to harness this force for good going forward, and the Foundation was born – out of your efforts.

Here’s what Sannabhoy had to say:

“The Kano Foundation is holding our annual bucket collection at Celtic Park before the Killie game on the 24th of September. This game also marks the 5000th child that we will take through the turnstiles to see Celtic.

“We are really keen/ desperate to have as many people help us with the bucket collection as possible as every penny raised goes towards allowing more children to get to see Celtic.

“If you can spare an hour or so please get in touch with us as we would be absolutely delighted to have as many people as possible rattling buckets. Please drop a note to Sannabhoy at Sannabhoy@thekanofoundation.com or go online to our website The Kano Foundation.

“Every single volunteer is worth about £50-100 to us so the more we have, the more we can raise and the more kids we can take to Celtic Park. We are now up to 102 child tickets at each game meaning we can now take almost 2000 kids each season.

Thanks and Hail Hail.”

You’ll speak to a hundred Celtic fans, have a great day and the weather’s going to be warm and sunny, I promise, so go sign up.

    Big Jimmy,

morning all, seem to remember the much maligned Frank Haffey being a bit of a singer, so that would be my guess.

    HH

    =========================================================

Frank Haffey sang the lead on ” Celtic , Celtic that`s the team for me ”

The ” B ” side was ” Home boys home ” which was great . I haven`t heard it for ages.

Think Charlie Tully had a disc out before that.

    Probably a 78 rpm. :-)

  7. FAO MACEW & SOUTH of TUNIS,

Yes Frank Haffey was a chanter and made a vinyl record(s), but he was not the first Celtic player to have a vinyl record

    Obviously Jinky wasn’t the 1st.

One clue, Bertie Auld and Willie ONeill told me when I took the vinyl record into Bairds Bar, that they were amazed as even though the knew this Celt to be a singer, they didn’t know that he had made a record ?

In fact, Bertie good me that this Celtic player would always be the first one to sing when the team were travelling to games, and a right auld sing song would kick aff !

  8. JOBO, 21:23 is very respectable… shade under 7 minute miling. If you ever get the chance check out the Greenock park run. It’s on the Esplanade and is bang flat. Everybody and his dug gets a pb there. (When it’s not blowing a hoolie) HH

  9. *** LAST MAN STANDING 8***

Please to say that (subject to any last minute buy-backs) all of this weekend’s picks are now in. it really does help us when we get everything signed off nice and early so thank you all. The choices of the 125 still standing at the moment major on 2 particular teams. But there are a few (ahem) surprises in there too. Here are the selections –

    Saturday 17 September

    Kilmarnock (2) v Partick

    Motherwell (1) v Hamilton

    Rangers* (5) v Ross County (1)

    St Johnstone (1) v Hearts (1)

    Manchester City (56) v Bournemouth

    Sunday 18 September

    Dundee v Aberdeen

    Watford v Manchester Utd (8) (12.00pm) – plus 1 going for a draw

    Inverness v Celtic (2)

    Tottenham (47) v Sunderland (4.30pm)

    * – also known as Sevco and The Deadie Bears

Good luck (well, to most of you!)

  11. MACJAY…give that man a coconut !

It was Charlie Tully. , but it was a 45rpm as I have the record.

Side- A ” Celtic are the Greatest Team”, sung by Tully.

Side B ” The Bhoys in White and Green”, written and sung by The Tullyman !

The unusual thing is that there is no year stated on the label, but there is a big clue to when it was released as Tully does NOT sing anything about winning the European Cup

But he does sing about Jock Stein being the manager on the song ” Celtic are the Greatest Team”.

That song is sung to the old wartime time/music ” Rinky Dinky Parlez Vous,”

When the Tullyman sings it, there is the main sound if an old squeezebox , I don’t know if that was Tully also ?

Record must have got their fixtures mixed up. Was expecting this story last Saturday.

Not too surprising after reading the appalling story about the young mascot in the Times last night.

Looks to me like Level 5 have their filthy paws all over this in the Record today.Deflect,deflect.

  15. Brendan dropping his biggest hints yet at what we need for CL.

There were almost as many reasons put forward for Celtic’s defeat in Barcelona as there were goals scored by Luis Enrique’s side.

It was painful viewing for the hoops support as they watched their side dismantled just as hope was brewing that Rodgers could take the club back to the recent highs enjoyed under Martin O’Neill, Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon.

There was areas all over the pitch, in the development, recruitment and preparation of players that contributed to the gulf between the teams but Rodgers feels that there was one underlying difference between the teams on the night.

“If you look at us domestically, in the league and cups, we’re a physical team,” the hoops boss explained. “We’re aggressive in our running and pressing, getting up to people and touching them when we press but the reality is, at Champions League level, in some areas of the field, we don’t have the physicality to press the game like we do domestically.

“Our biggest lesson was we weren’t aggressive enough. We will learn from the Champions League this season, but, for me, it’s about rolling out and we need certain profiles of players in order to help us as well.

“Obviously that might not come this season because our next window to improve is January but there are certain physical attributes you need, at that level in particular, that can help you.

“You look at the difference in speed, power and strength and we will try to get these players in January. That is something we tried to do in the summer, but we just didn’t have that availability of the players we wanted

You’ve got me digging though my old record collection. I’m sure I’ve got the Haffey single, which my da would’ve bought. I’ve told the story before about Frank walking past me and my wee mates playing fitba around 64/65 on the way to his then burd’s house in castlemilk. We’d shout over, knowing he’d get one of us to leather a shot at him, then he’d let it through his legs. We loved that. Good guy.

  17. See that Charlie Tully 45 is on the Outlet label . I remember a 45 on that label with someone singing the praises re Big Jock – can’t remember who sang it but the choon was The Billy Boys . Outlet was an interesting wee label — both sides of the divide were catered for .

  18. Hello again all you young rebels.

Although judging by some of the posts i thnk i’m stretching it a

bit with the young thingy, Charlie Tully singing, well i remember

him singing at a do in the St Mungo halls Glasgow Green yet i

can hardly remember 5 mins. ago or so the princess says.

Good discussion on the blog regarding the potential of young

Karomoko Dembele, after watching the vids of him it’s obvious

we have a future star in our hands but the big bad wolves are

sniffing about and it’s a, will he stay loyal to our club, or will he

follow the money ala Islam Feruz, wait and see.

But you know there’s loads of young kids out there just need to

be spotted by someone with an eye for a player and there’s so

many over here in Oz, we have one young African bhoy only

just turned eleven and imo he has everything Karomoko has but

could give him a yard speed wise and the heart of wee jinky and

best of all he plays with the Celtic away top under his strip every

week because he’s caught the Celtic bug.

Ever time i watch him i think if only there was a Celtic scout about

i would drag him by the hair to see this bhoy, but a Celtic scout i

would have more luck finding a shop that sold a Celtic strip and

thats impossible because of all the EPL saturation on tv and media

woaah there i go into my sales and merchandising rant again but

there must be somebody with a bit of a clue how to make the most

of a huge Scots Irish diaspora that benefits our club.

    Interested in anybody’s feedback.

  19. I thought the Game at Inverness was on Sky but looking down through the TV listings it appears that all Celtic games in future apart from the derby games are on BT sport. This is a huge disappointment as Virgin media in Ireland have dropped the Bt sport from it’s platform to which i subscribed. Anyone know if Sky have dispensed almost entirely with the SPFL?
