We’ve not lost the joy in supporting our team

898

I never really understood what was so special about Roy Keane as a player until he came to Celtic, where he opened my eyes for 11 games (his first two performances, against Clyde and Kilmarnock, were awful).

He’s right up there in terms of great footballers I’ve seen play for Celtic, but he’s difficult to feel affection for. Today’s comments are a case in point:

“When [Celtic] qualified [for the Champions League]the celebrations were way over the top.

“I thought they’d won the competition. People were hugging each other, the manager, the coaches, the players.”

And the fans, Roy, Celtic fans were celebrating every bit as much as anyone you watched on television. No one thought we’d won the competition, but we are all aware of the transformational impact group qualification has on our football club. That’s worth celebrating. Fans all did, even if some former players found it difficult.

Brendan Rodgers qualified for the group stage with what was largely the same squad which disintegrated in Europe last season. He became the first Celtic manager to reach this level in his first season.

This challenge, coming a few weeks into your time as manager, is viewed as hugely difficult objective by the club. New managers seldom takeover successful gigs, with an upward trajectory and a list of targets ready to sign up.

The significant achievement in Europe this season, which has largely gone below the radar, is beating last season’s Champions League group stage participants, Astana, 2-1 at Celtic Park, with 11 starters who were all at the club before Brendan took over (one Rodgers signing started the away leg).

By any measure, Astana should have considered their chances that night and concluded, “We were better than them last season, and they’ve not added a player to the team”. (Two of Brendan’s signing came on as second half subs).

Going into this season we turned-over around 10% of what one of Roy’s other former clubs, or Barcelona received. If we had around £450m extra to spend, every season, there would be less celebration at reaching the group stage, as it would no longer be transformational. Maybe we’d be like football fans in Manchester, and only fill half our stadium against a Bundesliga team.

Or maybe we’ve not lost the joy in supporting our team.  Neither have the manager, coaches and players.

  2. Jum Whyte: ‘Joey, why are you so rude…’

Joey Barton – very good footballer. Nouveau intellectual, maybe realising the extent and depth of the fermenting bigotry at Mordor- not the myth he’s heard about all his days but truth.

Joey might have the burgeoning intellect to get over his spat with the team but be assured some of the team – those inbred closed-minded wee Huns from loyalist backgrounds – have’nt the generosity of spirit or professionalism to forgive a mouthy fenian in their ranks.

To them, Joey will have enforced the mindset they’ve grown up with – the fenians never know their place, etc.

Someone will cement him at training, anything going wrong on the park will fall on him. He won’t be able to build bridges with those peepil – will probably find his kit smelling of piss – no-one has for around 300 years.

Best thing he can do is get out and find a club where his talent will be appreciated, and he’ll be among peers he respects and can work with; where there will be no need for him to exert his ego because he will be comfortable with his place in the a squad. A club like us.

Yup, I’d take him in a minute – defensive mid with talent and personality. Wee ‘upset the applecart and yer arse is grass’ clause in the contract and we’ve got the perfect player to aid Broony.

Before ye dismiss the possibility out of hand, please remember the ridiculous hand-wringing and condemnation on here when we were linked with a we efella called Leigh griffiths; if I recall there were some rid-faced sweetie wives who were never going to watch the Hoops again with such a scurrilous individual on the payroll…

Great stuff from Roy. Sits well with my opinion of him.

I think he’s a very driven fella with a clear definition of how he wants things done. As such,he will always be his own worst enemy and biggest critic.

He will also be the worst enemy ANYONE can have if he feels hard done by. Not a man who bears grudges lightly!

I doubt his comments on Tuesday were made in order to grab a cheap headline. He told the truth as he saw it. They were harsh, but they were accurate. The words of a hurting and angry Celtic supporter, not those of a cheap headline hunter.

With all of the above in mind,I wish he would chill out a bit. That level of intensity canny be good for ye!

Barton was Burnley’s POTY last season. On the back of that, had Celtic signed him in the summer, this place would have been in meltdown.

In a dozen or so hun games since,he has been far far short of last season. Signing him now makes even less sense than it did then.

  9. Yep Green Man, Another point that needs to be remembered is that Roy came from a fairly tough area of Cork called Mayfield, there is an area adjoining it called The Glen and the old joke in Cork was,

Why did Robin Hood come riding through the Glen? and the answer of course was ” Because he was afraid to come through Mayfield.

I’m sure there are similar areas in Glasgow. You just had to be tough to survive. Roy never turned his back or tried to disown where he came from, quite the opposite, he goes back to watch local matches etc and is generous to local Charities etc. It would be a brave or a foolish man who would go back there & criticise him.

I’d never want to see Joey Barton play for Celtic. Not just because he is tainted by them but his previous actions as a person and “footballer” leave a lot to be desired.

Ive been lucky enough to work with some fantastic historians from Cork.

First and foremost, they were good people:)

They all loved football…..not one had a bad word to say about Roy,…they were in fact, proud of him as a bhoy from Cork.

That was all i needed to know.

They tell me, Roy does his bit ok.

  15. Jim Whyte

A blue nose acquaintance of mine used to share a Glasgow West end back court with Mr Whyte . Jim’s dog regularly pissed and pooped in the back court ( media superstars not having the time to go walkies with their pooch ). Acquaintance politely asked Jim to cease and desist the foul practice. The polite version didn’t work , acquaintance resorted to direct counselling -problem solved !

    ______________________________________

I was listening to it on the way back from the cemetery.

Basically he was saying he’d had a frank exchange of views with Andy Halliday, but had no problem with him at all. He said the whole team, including him, were gash and they had to accept that they had moved up a level from part-timers in the Championship. He was making his point that they all needed to do better and start winning. Though he was smug enough to say he was MOM against Hamilton so couldnae be that bad.

The Magic Twat seems to have taken exception to how Joseph Anthony (RC) was making his point and they had a discussion about it. Apparently Warburton has indicated that Joseph Anthony goes away and re-evaluates his thinking.

Barton doesn’t think his thinking will change; he admits he is ineloquent when putting across his point, but his message is bang on the money. He also mused on why he was put on the naughty step for a week and Halliday wasn’t. Didn’t display any respect whatsoever for the Magic Twat.

So reading between the lines, it’s Barton setting himself up against the Magic Twat; bloodletting will no doubt follow. Both of them won’t be there at Christmas!

  17. We have less than two weeks until city come calling . As much as I respect the guy . No way should mikel be played at right back against sterling , most of city,s attacks on Wednesday came from sterlings speed and trickery . So for me it’s less than a fortnight to get the speedy WEE fullback ready . And less than a fortnight to get the rest of them to realise they are playing for the celtic .

  18. Regular visitor but not a regular poster but felt compelled to post following the Celtic Story at the Pavilion last night.

I have the to class myself as an armchair supporter as I seldom attend games nowadays due to other things in my life. My good lady booked the show for me as an early birthday present a good while ago and it was something I had been looking forward to.

I was curious to how she would react to the occasion as she has always said that she is a Hearts fan. This stems back to her student days In the capital.and having a boyfriend who must have been an arse. (We were all young and daft once)

Anyway for my part I found the show hilarious , poignant and very emotional, it managed to strip away all the crap like the politics, bigotry, finance etc and reminded me why I support Celtic and how lucky I am.

The good lady danced and clapped along although “she didn’t know the songs” .On the way home she commented that it was good to find out the history, her comment that”you’re quite a passionate lot” made me smile (she’s no more a Hearts fan than I am, it was all based on teenage lust )

I can’t see her buying a season ticket anytime soon but at least she has opened the door a wee bit and seen the light. The great thing is she did it herself .

On another note a big well done to Bert Auld who was outside the theatre having photographs taken and came on with the cast midway through and at the end of the show. You just know that the wee man was having a ball as were the cast.Oh and he had the big cup with him to.
