Hit them quick and hard

263

Dundee have not scored a goal since taking a 2-0 lead over Motherwell with 20 minutes remaining earlier this month.  Since then, they have played 200 minutes football, plus added time.  Motherwell battered in three late goals that day to take the points, as Tony Docherty’s defence capitulated.

Their response, was to keep out Aberdeen and Newco, both of whom scored three times against the Celtic defence this month.  That bizarre loss to Motherwell is Dundee’s only defeat since losing 7-1 at Celtic Park in February.  Dundee were a shambles that day, but they reacted with the same fortitude they did to the defeat from Motherwell.

Celtic won 0-3 at Dundee on Boxing Day, albeit the game remained in the balance until late, and we won 3-0 in the first league meeting between the sides this season, in September.  Both these three goal wins were level at the break.

We can conclude that Dundee are a difficult side to predict.  When it goes wrong, it goes wrong quickly and thoroughly, but until then, they have enough composure to subdue most opponents.  So hit them quick and hard.

It’s all getting a bit exciting.

McPhail Bhoy is correct. The greatest goalscorer in British history is buried in Dalbeth.

Another record the hun will never touch. J.E McGrory has scored more goals than newclub.

    Mon the John Higgins!

    _____

Would love to see John won it again. Very tough draw against Mark Allen, who’s been excellent this year. Not a lot of big hitters left in the tournament. Whoever wins this is in with a shout, though hard to see past O’Sullivan.

In all our history with all our heroes I am forever scratching my chin as to why JAMES EDWARD is not the most revered.

*on that subject here’ a wee song that some of us oul yins will recall:

“here’s tae the lad who was born in the Garngad and one more the bluenose crew we’ve mastered

So, get down on yer knees and pray it’s the anniversary of the hampden massacre ya blue nose bas***d

    I actually love doing it.

Once you get over the misspelled. The English rather that gaelic and the church records in Latin coupled with same names repeated without even being related etc

5 generations back on my paternal grandparents side. 1850/60 Ireland

Grandas grandparents Higgins and Collins Clonoe parish coalisland Tyrone. I have found his parents marriage.

The Collins live 1 mile from the Higgins on the road to the washing Bay on loch neagh. They come to the port around 1880.

My grandas mum was also called Collins but they originate in Derry.

They came to the port around 1870.

My granny is a Campbell. Her grandparents are Campbell docorty. Quin and bonnar.

The quin family names are in the same annaghmore lands in1860 as the Higgins. A mile apart.

I keep on researching. What I do find interesting birkmyres mill was hiring Irish girls for ropes and sails before they brought men for the yards.

    God bless the port irish

  9. hey 418 is back.

    welcome back pal

could you please comment on how you would qualify ‘they’ in the link you posted!

  10. I always wondered.

What made that first James Higgins come to the port around 1880 with his new bride a Collins.

All documents has his mark her mark . Speak and read Irish. Can speak English but cannot read or write.

But they were not the first Higgins here. His sister. Maryanne had already arrived some years before for employment in birkmyres mill.

Her husband a devlin came later. They too were married in Clonoe parish.

James and Mary Ann might even have been twins.

*absolutely and it pains me when I read about his much maligned managerial career, which was a lot better than has been made out, after all he rejoined us at the tail end of the war where we suffered badly due to personnel away doing their civil and country duty and our boards obstinance at takin on loan players which cost us, among others, Matt Busby who was burstin tae turn out in the hoops.

Prior to this he was manager down at rugby park where they finished runners up in a Scottish Cup Final replay to East Fife after knocking both us and the deid team out, they also won the St Vincent de Paul Charity Cup, mibbees I should repeat that as kilmasonic, and St Vincent de Paul seems like and oxymoron lol.

After saving us from the ignominy of relegation he then signed Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock, and Charles Patrick to join Bobby Evans and John McPhail where he led us tae the Scottish, St Mungo and Coronation Cups before our first double in 40 years, followed by our first League Cup which we repeated the following year with “Oh hampden in the Sun”, there were also 4 each of Glasgow and Charity Cups, oh and I should mention signing a journeyman centre half fae Llanelli Town AFC

Talkin of the Big Mhan we luved tae hail hail his achievement in winning the SC against one of his former clubs but it should be noted that it was Jimmy that guided us tae the semis before Jock took over where we won it after a replayed tie against motherwell and of course a come fae behind victory on that marvelous sunny afternoon in the national final.

Oh, one more as it was him that signed oul Ronnie who Jock was glad tae get rid of, big Tam, Chopper, big Billy, Luggy, Jinky, Stevie the Buzz Bomb and of course wee Ten Thirty, 3 times, nae wonder he wept that memorable night on May 25, 1967.

I’ll raise my glass to the memory of James Edward McGrory. 1904-1982.

    Glasgow Celtic 1922-1937.

Still holds British goalscoring records 87 years after he retired. We shall never see his like again.

Ffs .. you are never alone

My top 3 Celts (remember am only 53)

    Paul McStay

    Tommy Burns

    Neil Lennon

Just my opinion but all 3 are missing type of Celtic 🍀

  14. Sorry; I have to contribute something before I can turn the page. Wasn’t aware when I typed that the Greatest ever Celt was himself buried in Dalbeth (all of my family are buried there; never heard it called anything else).

    100% true.

If any Celtic player deserved more recognition and a statue it would be him. The best of the best.

I much prefer listening to Denis Taylor and Ken Doherty doing commentary on snooker to listening to Huns like swally and his mates spouting pish about football.

  19. garygillespieshamstring on

I’d like a John Higgins Stephen Maguire final for some reason.

No Huns at the crucible final.
