Dark days of 2012 haunt Ibrox once more

675

One of two things are going to happen:

Possibility One:

Dave King will say: “You ain’t got no problem, journos. I’m on the pot. Go back in there, chill them Bears out and wait for the £30m, which should be coming directly”.

Possibility Two:

Dave King will make some irrelevant, vacuous, comment, or make no comment at all, but he will NOT say “Chill them Bears out and wait for the £30m”, because £30m isn’t coming.

If option one happens, Newco has a future.  If anything but option one happens, they have no future.

They will need £10m to keep the lights on next season in the Championship – and that’s before any ambitions to improve the football operation.  Even more important than keeping the lights on, they need to find £5m to repay Ashley’s loan (yes, getting Intellectual Property off Mike Ashley is more important than staying out of administration).

That’s £15m loan or capital investment needed, on top of ticket sales and other income, to survive the next 12 months, without repaying any of the directors loans and without finding a budget for a better keeper than Cammy Bell.

If they find this money, and they win promotion next year, they will still have a deficit (even with the current player budget) in the Premiership.  £30m would be gone within two years, and that’s assuming the millions needed to be spent on the stadium is forgone for a while longer.

While King was building momentum to displace the last board, he was crystal clear about the level of ambition which was a minimum requirement for Newco: compete with Celtic.  He was prepared to spend his children’s inheritance, £30m, £40m, whatever it takes!

Now he’s not so verbose.

Last year he issued a statement asking “Does the [Newco] board agree it is unfair to ask fans to buy season tickets before they consider the business review?”  Now he’s ‘on the throne’ we’re hearing little about the club’s plans. It’s easy running a football club when you’re criticising the guys currently doing the job, it’s a whole lot harder when it’s you who has to make the decisions.

Mike Ashley’s EGM next week may be a welcome distraction.  Mike will be the bogeyman, but only for the permanently gullible (and there are lots of them).  His loan is modest compared to the size of the funding gap and it was known about before King urged shareholders to back him.

That Ashley is an uncompromising lender and holder of onerous contracts is no mitigation for King.  Ashley is that and more.  We knew this, King knew it when he told fans he was the man to turn things around.  He cannot act surprised now.

So is the £30m coming?  Even if King has the money, I can’t see it, it just doesn’t make sense.  Pouring £30m into a black hole, without merchandising rights for 7 years, without a realistic prospect of being competitive on the field, when the only reward is to survive long enough to pour in yet more millions, is lunacy.  The dark days of 2012 will haunt Ibrox once more.

It makes more sense to let the club go to the wall, let Ashley run off with the Rangers brands, make him the bogeyman, and use your money to bid for the stadium from the insolvency practitioner.  Four or five years down the line Govan United could be a top-flight team.  They may even be able to cut a deal with Ashley for rights to the ‘Rangers’ name, which despite all that’s gone on, still has some cachet.

I’m pleased to read Celtic on the front foot again this morning regarding the Offensive Behaviour’ Act. I’d hoped that when the baton passed from Salmond to Sturgeon the Scottish Government’s lunge in the direction of extraordinary police powers, and laws created after curious political considerations, would end. I gather a glimpse of doubt crept in around a year ago, as immediate political realities gave the Government reason to reconsider, but all such self-doubts have since been washed away.

Get used to the Act, police with guns on our streets as a matter of course, and ambitious aims for their authority.

It’s good to hear that the Club have sold 44.000 season tickets, that must be nearing their full house status, I know Celtic Park holds 61.000 but they can’t sell that amount, they have to make allowances for the non season ticket holders and the away support, and there is another month that the stragglers can purchase a ST, if they want one. I purchased my ticket the first week they were on offer but had doubts about renewing, the thought of buying my season ticket and still a chance of that lot joining us in the Premier League gave me the shivers, happily they got gubbed by a far better team on the two days.

I’m glad that Motherwell managed to get shot of their Manager, (Can’t remember his name at the moment) But he went too that other team (That, I also can’t remember) no wonder, they have had 4 different names in the two and a half years since Liquidation came about, I’m glad they are suffering now, never went to another game against them after the Minister booked 9 Celts at Ibrox, (can’t remember that pr*cks name either),Thank god my memory has gone bye-byes, ach well that’s what happens when you get into the dotage years.

Would have loved to have bought a few newspapers in the last few days just to see what was written in them, I can’t see them speaking the truth,That would be a habit that would be hard to break as they will still carry on with their love affair with them’s, (Still can’t remember their name), I watched the actual game, probably the best comedy show I’ve seen in years, well there wasn’t much football played but Plenty of laughs during the game, and better laughs after the game, I see that they are going to hold an enquiry about said game, even money, the Motherwell lad who pushed Monster Moshni will receive the bigger ban, well they won’t ban Moshni as he has disappeared from the scene of the crime.

The Memories of that game at the weekend will last until the start of the Qualifiers in about five weeks time, I feel that we have a good chance of competing in the Qualifiers better this season than last and think we pass the test, Ronni never had a hope in hells chance of qualifying last season, he never had time to get the team ready for those games, After the last game against the Polish team Legia I had my doubts that Ronni was the right man for the job,but the team has certainly improved beyond reckognition in the past few months and it’s got me excited for the season ahead. At least we wont have to worry about bad refereeing as the men in black will come from a foreign land, thank god for that.

Nice to hear that Blatter has gone, I know it would be a miracle, but I hope the corrupt SFA will follow suit.Better close now as it’s getting a bit sore on my arthritic fingers.

I’ll be in the Blane Valley around 2.00pm on Friday, if you fancy a drinking session. first post for a while??.

    tinytim,

    How long have you got?

Born in 1944, the 60’s were a magical time.

A time when post War austerity was easing and parents, while not spoiling their children, certainly wanted a better life for us.

Football wise, we were in the doldrums. Had been since the Double of 53-54, except for two League Cup wins.

It was also the time of Comprehensive education and our school, St.Augustine’s, which opened in 1956 was one of the first.

But, of course, it was Rock and Roll that defined those years.

Bill Haley and the Comets caused riots in cinemas.

There was Elvis, of course, but what hooked me was the opening riff of Buddy Holly’s “That’ll be the Day”.

To this day, I still chill when I hear it.

The Everly Bros, Fats Domino, Littke Richard, etc., were producing sounds unheard of on the airways prior to that.

All popular music that followed afterwards were only variations of the original fashion that created R ‘n ‘ R.

    Then there was the fashion.

Beforehand, girls dressed as mini mammys and boys like wee daddy clones.

However. No matter how well anyone can describe those times, it is not the same.

You had to have been there.

I think it is the one thing that my children are jealous off and to tell the truth, I don’t blame them!
